Peter Berg Blames THE AVENGERS For The Failure Of BATTLESHIP

Will we be getting a sequel to Battleship? Well, not unless people stop seeing Marvel's The Avengers according to Peter Berg! The director looks back at how he believes the success of that film resulted in the poor domestic box office debut of his.

Internationally, Battleship was a moderate success, making a total of $235 million. However, it was a very different story in North America where the film made only a paltry $63 million at the box office. The reason for this failure? According to director Peter Berg, Earth's Mightiest Heroes are to blame. He might just be on to something there, although he fails to mention Battleship's 33% score on review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes and the awful word of mouth which surrounded the film when it was released. In the following interview with MTV News, Berg also shares his thoughts on the chances of a sequel...something it seems fair to say that no one is eagerly anticipating!

"The movie kicked butt internationally, but we kind of ran into a wall when 'Avengers' refused to go away. 'The Avengers' outperformed everything. It was impossible for 'Battleship' to get any oxygen. I would have loved to have come out three weeks before 'The Avengers' domestically, like we did internationally."

"We did OK, but in hindsight — which my grandmother used to say is worth about a bucket of spit — we would have [released the movie] ahead of 'The Avengers,' not realizing it would have become, I think, the second biggest film in history behind 'Avatar.' "

"What I need everyone to do is go see 'Battleship' now that they've seen 'Avengers' five times. If they do that, we can definitely make a sequel. 'Battleship' is a film that I would definitely like to do a sequel to. I loved making that film. I had a great time with it."

The only thing that stood out in this film, was that Rihanna was surprisingly not awful.

Or maybe because it's based on a board game and got negative reviews and all the trailers were laughed at months before it was released.

The only thing you can blame the Avengers for is being a good movie.

lol see that's the shit about dumbasses in Hollywood...

they all think all movies of the same genre are equal. like retail products. just because Battleship filled your "action movie quota" for the season doesn't mean it's on par with all other action movies. we're not (as) retarded anymore, peter.

battleship looked like garbage. that's the reason you couldn't get an actual actress and had to settle for a pop star.

I wouldn't say battleship "kicked butt" internationally, it did well, but Avengers kicked butt internationally. Battle ship was just a bad movie, bad acting, bad dialog, bad story. Great effects though.

Now that we have all seen the Avengers 5 times, we should go watch Battleship. Hmmm... I think I will just go see the Avengers for a 6th time and pretend that craptastic "movie" about a board game doesn't exist. LOL!!!!

KamCannon
KamCannon - 6/25/2012, 3:34 PM
Actual @EzrasHugeReviews I would have if they had just taken the script for a Naval thriller, slapped the classic line in there (You know the one) and thrown the title on it. It could have been good, but they went in this weird direction...

You people always say 'No one' but I can guarantee you someone out there enjoyed Battleship far more than they did Avengers.

CrispySeaplanes
CrispySeaplanes - 6/25/2012, 3:36 PM
Maybe if they'd actually made a movie based on the game instead of just using the title of the game and making a movie about Transformer reject aliens. I don't remember there being aliens in the original Battleship game...
IronHood
IronHood - 6/25/2012, 3:36 PM
No movie is too blame. Whether good = The Avengers or bad = Battleship. The problem why Berg is so upset is actual people! Everyone is bringing in factors about how Avengers was better (to which I do not disagree) or the director's film history or poor acting... NONE of that is too blame. The people are to be blamed & the people who chose the release date are to be blamed. You should have known better Mr. Berg. It was the Avengers! A movie in the making since the 1960s or earliest 2009! It's your own people's fault. Oh well, now you now better for next time.
