SELMA Director Up For Helming A MARVEL Origin Film

SELMA Director Up For Helming A MARVEL Origin Film

With an Oscar nomination for her direction on the Martin Luther King Jr. biopic under her belt, as well as a small Spider-Man 2 credit, would director Ava Duvernay tackle a Marvel superhero? Check it out!

Given Marvel Studios currently has at least four movies dated without directors attached, HitFix recently asked Selma helmer Ava Duvernay would she be up for tackling one of the high-profile gigs if she were to be approached by the studio. In light of her Spider-Man 2 publicist credit, diverse background, and Academy Award-nominated depiction of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.'s historic struggle, Duvernay would seem like a excellent candidate to helm either the Captain Marvel or Black Panther  movie... even if she's not too familiar with any source matarial or the superheroes themselves. "That would probably be the first step... figuring out what they got over there," Ava told the HitFix reporter. "I'm not a big comic book fan, but I know that I love to deconstruct heroes, deconstruct myths. I probably would want to do some kind of origin story, where you get to the core of it, before they get the powers. I don't know about Marvel, but I know I love to tell all kinds of stories, so I don't say no to anything; everything's possible." What do you think?

Seriously, I love this woman's work. Her directing style as well as the Cinematography for Selma proved that she's capable of something like this. If she worked on Black Panther I might cry.

A black woman directing a Super Hero film. Never thought I'd see this day. Glad it's getting closer.

@Melkaticox

Not racist at all...

I'm more comfortable with her directing Black Panther than many other directors, even black ones (Spike Lee). She directed a film about MLK, that showcased all of the human qualities of a great black leader. He humanized him, displayed his flaws and leadership as well as brining an Oscar Worthy performance out of Oyellowo. She could apply the same skills to Black Panther, mainly because not only is it similar, but it would also make it a challenge to bring those characteristics to a Super Hero.

Certainly Black Panther. Just keep Hudlin lightyears away from it.

Black Panther or Jessica Jones. Something character-driven.

Well, if she does, don't expect an accurate interpretation of the source material if she directed Selma. Selma got panned because of how inaccurate it was historically. So, if she directs Black Panther, expect it to be set in the 60's and for T'Challa to be a disenfranchised student at Berkeley or something.
