THE AVENGERS Star Robert Downey Jr. Defends His Upcoming Slate of Big Blockbuster Films as Character Pieces

While promoting his latest Sherlock Holmes film, the actor says he'll only stop playing Sherlock or Tony Stark (Iron Man) when audience tires of him.

Robert Downey Jr. is currently in Brazil promoting his new movie Sherlock Holmes: Game of Shadows, which is yet another big blockbuster Hollywood movie that the popular actor has put out in the last few years. The actor has gone through a huge revitalization to his career ever since Marvel put him in the Iron Man suit. Since then he has been one of the hottest actors, and big name directors like Tim Burton are clamoring to have him in their next film.

Google Translated:
Five years ago, who did not identify themselves when they think of Tony Stark, because all comic book artists changed the character. I'm glad that fans can identify with me.

The sure things that I have right now are Iron Man 3 and The Avengers. I haven’t seen The Avengers but we worked hard in bringing all these heroes together. I hope people like it. There may be a third ‘Sherlock Holmes’ and I’m talking a lot with Tim Burton regarding ‘Pinocchio’. I haven’t signed anything but it’s possible.

People love to separate the big films from the smaller films. I’ve heard comments about how I’m only accepting roles in big films and not doing small films that are about characters and relationships. But my films are also about the characters and their relationships. I think I’ll only stop doing Iron Man when I realize that it’ll be boring for people to see me as Tony Stark. The same goes for Sherlock Holmes. I’m not too concerned about the size of a film; I’m worried about the character.

I'm so pleased to hear he's interested in singing up for more Marvel films. I was somewhat worried that Iron Man might not be included in the sequels to the Avengers...

Could be interesting to see RDJ in Pinocchio with Burton at the helm. Would be a change from Depp (although with Tim Burton, Depp may even play Pinocchio...)

I recently re-watched his movie Chaplin. He truly IS an amazing actor. Thank god drugs didn't kill him like Belushi or others. I've often wondered what else Belushi could have done. Anyways.. peace

"I hope people like it"?

What happened to his attitude about Avengers being fantastically epic? Doesn't seem like a good sign to me.

Who the hell would have said this? They don't realise that all of his films were originally small films, but unless they're talking about Independent films then they're still stupid. I'm pretty sure if someone went to Downey and asked him if he could be in their film, I'd say that Downey would except for a good price. I mean, just look at Incredible Hulk, he was in it and that was only for a small cameo.

Agreed. Even though some of his movies are great, most are just a hit and miss.

It's cool to see actors embrace their Comic Book Movie rolls. Especially in this case as Iron Man revived RDJ's career.

Cannibus can cure cancer. Why would anyone ever even touch anything else.

Thanks Robert and Jon F. Ah yeah.

Stay ...away from Burton As you Can ...

How about Halle Berry as Storm signing on to play Catwoman. That was the worst.

Their was a trailor for Sherlock Holmes on animated film Superman/Batman. So awesome. Guy who played Iron Man in front of Superman and Batman.

Yeah Right thats cool.

Doesn't matter what the budget is, a good film is a good film and it's usually the scripting and characters that make it so. At least RDJ is taking intriguing roles and breathing some life into them. Other actors take roles flatter than the paper they're printed on and give a performance more wooden than the tree the paper came from!

Yeah He's Pretty kool. I was completely blown away with Iron Man as having been saturated with Crud CBMs. But then I remembered my homie told me how Marvel Studios was established and I saw that Crud come on screen and I knew I was in for something special.
