It's been reported that Batman: The Animated Series and Arkham trilogy star Kevin Conroy has passed away, meaning we have to say goodbye to an actor who defined the Caped Crusader for an entire generation.

We have some very sad news to share with you today as it's being reported that voice actor Kevin Conroy has passed away following a short battle with cancer. Conroy was 66 years old.

Despite having a number of noteworthy live-action credits to his name, Conroy will be best known to most of you for voicing the title character in Batman: The Animated Series. He also starred in the classic Batman: Mask of the Phantasm, and reprised the role in a number of TV shows, including Superman: The Animated Series and Batman Beyond

Conroy returned to the role on countless occasions, including in many of Warner Bros. Home Entertainment's DCAU movies. However, it was his work in the Arkham trilogy of video games that won the actor a new generation of fans, while he also received widespread acclaim for reuniting with Mark Hamill in Batman: The Killing Joke (which received a theatrical release).

He'd later get the opportunity to finally play Bruce Wayne in live-action when he appeared as a Kingdom Come-inspired villainous Dark Knight in The CW's Crisis on Infinite Earths crossover.

Conroy's last time playing Batman was in the MultiVersus video game that came out this year, while there have been reports he was set to lend his voice to Thomas Wayne in the upcoming Batman: Caped Crusader TV series dropped by HBO Max. It's unclear whether he recorded anything for that one, however.

We've lost a true great in Conroy, and he will be missed. I was actually fortunate enough to speak with the actor back in 2017 (you can read that here if you're interested), and it was clear he loved playing Batman. More than anything, he was a fan of the character, and quite obviously cared a lot about how the superhero is portrayed on screen, no matter who was playing him.

Our thoughts go out to Kevin's friends and family at this time. RIP.

A legend. A Batman for all time. His performance in Mask of Phantasm is genuinely GRIPPING and stuck with me as a kid. His work as Batman brought a pathos to character that’s unmatched by any other adaptations in my opinion. He will always be the voice of the caped crusader. May he Rest In Peace

He will always be BATMAN

This is absolutely awful, wrenching news. I feel like I've been punched in the gut and I can't breathe.

66 years old is too young in our age of modern medicine. He leaves us with so much, but I can't help but weep for what he still had to give that we'll never know.

Rest In Peace, Kevin Conroy. Thank you for everything.

This is extremely sad and unexpected. It would be hard to find someone who didn't think of him when mentioning Batman. Not only was he a great Batman, but he seemed like a great person based on interviews I've seen and read. R.I.P legend, you will be missed, but never forgotten.
