Clayface Expected To Lose #1 Spot This Weekend — But The R-rated DCU Horror Movie May Have Legs

Clayface could lose the box office crown this Halloween, but a strong second-weekend hold would suggest the DCU horror movie has legs. Can its $44 million budget help it turn a profit?

Clayface opened with $24 million last weekend, but will it hold on to #1 over Halloween? Boxoffice PRO currently expects the DC Studios movie to slip to second place with a projected $10 million to $15 million haul.

A24's hit documentary You Can See Everything will likely move into that top spot with $12 million to $17 million, but as is evident from these numbers, it's going to be a very tight race. However, while Clayface isn't set to enjoy a huge Halloween bump, the numbers suggest the R-rated DCU title may have legs.

If it gets to $15 million, that's a drop of only 37.5%, which is rare for a superhero movie. $10 million would be closer to 58.3%, and only a result on that lower end would be considered cause for concern.

Clayface's A- CinemaScore and 94% rating on Rotten Tomatoes' Popcornmeter seem to be helping. Plus, with a $44 million production budget, the horror movie doesn't have as much on the line as Supergirl, for example.

If the film falls 37.5% to $15 million, that would be a promising hold. A 50% decline to $12 million would be fairly ordinary, while a 58.3% drop to $10 million would suggest that the opening weekend was front-loaded. Ultimately, anything close to $15 million would point to the movie having a decent chance of developing legs.

However, there's an important distinction between a good second-weekend hold and a profitable theatrical run. A strong U.S. run will be hugely beneficial, but Clayface needs to generate enough worldwide box office to cover not just production costs but also marketing and the exhibitors' share of ticket sales. The potential issue there is that Clayface had a soft start internationally with a $19 million debut.

In Clayface, Matt Hagen’s meteoric rise from Gotham street kid to Hollywood leading man is tragically cut short when a local crime boss’s actions leave him horribly disfigured. Abandoned by his team and with nothing left, Matt seeks out a cutting-edge treatment that miraculously returns him to his former self, but also unexpectedly affects his grip on reality, spiralling him down a destructive path of all-consuming revenge.

The movie stars Tom Rhys Harries in the title role of the "cult-favourite" villain from Gotham's rogues' gallery. The cast includes Naomi Ackie, David Dencik, Max Minghella and Eddie Marsan, as well as Nancy Carroll and Joshua James.

We concluded our Clayface review by saying, "Tom Rhys Harries shines in Clayface, an uninspired and unoriginal movie that's too light on horror and lacking in comic book personality to be anything but forgettable. It should have been a game-changer for the genre; instead, it's DC's Morbius moment."

Directed by James Watkins from a screenplay by Mike Flanagan and Hossein Amini, Clayface is now playing in theaters.

Regardless of how well it does financially it was a great movie but the only crux is will it only further embolden James Gunn to be a lazy CEO and talk us to death with his tweets and now a Podcast?

@SupermanFamFan - lazy? He's editing a Superman Saga movie while writing the next one AND talking us to death with his tweets and now a Podcast.

That's not lazy. It's not good either but it's not lazy...

@UltimaRex - Maybe I used the wrong word but too me it seems like at the very least he should do less talking on social media at least for now. It comes off weird imo you do not see Feige do this much at all

James Gunn isn’t Kevin Feige - they’re never going to do things exactly the same and why should they?

@cincymovieguy - That's not my point jeez. Why is everyone so touchy and quick to defend Gunn? I'm not even a Fiege guy I was just using him as an example.

@FireGunn - Exactly that's what I was trying to say, this podcast is silly and it doesn't help that what is next in line is the Grodd TV show

What's your point then? Lol. It's a one episode podcast that probably won't be longer than an hour.

@SupermanFamFan - sometimes I think Gunn does this BECAUSE Feige doesn't.

Like if we heard from Feige on social media all we'd hear from Gunn is silence...

@cincymovieguy - "James Gunn isn’t Kevin Feige - they’re never going to do things exactly the same and why should they?"

Just off the top of my head... to make money?

@UltronIO

None of Feige’s movies last year made any money. Brand New Day seemed to give everyone collective amnesia on how hard Marvel Studios has struggled over the last 6 years.

They have show out now that no one outside of this site seems to watch. It’s perfectly okay for DC not to be emulating Marvel, and vice versa.

@SupermanFamFan - I think it’s because even though I would prefer if gun wasn’t as active online end of the day, it’s really innocuous. People online just treat anything that is “cringe” or “corny” as some major crime though.
Kahron0
Kahron0 - 10/30/2026, 8:18 AM
@cincymovieguy - You’re making the mistake of expecting people online to have anything more than short-term memory. The only recent MCU films that have made substantial money and turned a significant profit are Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, Deadpool & Wolverine, and Spider-Man: Brand New Day. And even then, you’re looking at legacy franchises: one was the conclusion of a trilogy, another was a major multiverse event, and the third was a highly anticipated sequel to the highest-grossing Spider-Man film ever, featuring one of the most popular iterations of the character. Even Avengers: Doomsday is essentially trading on the legacy of Endgame. Meanwhile, on the television side, Daredevil: Born Again and VisionQuest have come and gone without generating the same level of cultural momentum.

But because Brand New Day has been such a massive success, suddenly people are acting like Marvel is completely back without looking at the bigger picture. You can see the same thing happening with the DCU in reverse. Because Supergirl underperformed, people are suddenly acting as though the entire franchise has been a failure from the beginning, conveniently overlooking that it’s barely been around for two years and that most of its projects have actually been received positively. People are reacting to the latest headline rather than looking at the broader track record or the context behind individual projects.

SupermanFamFan - 10/30/2026, 9:09 AM
@Kahron0 - I can't disagree with you there, I just find some of his decisions and how he goes about it strange. Like for example, the latest article yesterday saying how he wants to do a Polka Dot man TV series.

Now don't get me wrong I thought Polka Dot man on Suicide Squad was extremely original and hilarious but it just feels like the worst time to throw that idea into the ether.

I am just holding onto MOT doing a good job at the moment. Some of the users in these comments went after me for criticizing Gunn despite me being a DC fan.

You have to admit Gunn certainly comes up with oddball ideas that almost come off "edgelord" lmfao
SupermanFamFan
SupermanFamFan - 10/30/2026, 9:15 AM
@Kahron0 - please don't lump me in with the short term memory crowd as I am fully aware of everything you listed in this comment and am not an MCU fan. For instance I don't care how successful BND was financially I abhorred the movie... Secondly as a Supergirl fan I feel Supergirl was a huge blunder and I somewhat resent James Gunn for doing Milly's Supergirl dirty. Now of course Gunn can fix the damage if he has her kicking a$$ in MoT along side Supes, I am a simple man.

I loved Clayface so that really should help the DCU. But you forgot to mention Lanterns in your comment which was terrible and is already off of the Nielson charts because people are not "binging" it. I watched Lanterns week after week all the way through loving episodes 2,5 and 7 but as I always say on here the rest of the show was dreadful.

Imo the future of the DCU is on the shoulders of how MoT performs and as a Super fan I hope to God it comes out swinging 💪

Sorry for the detail but a few users on here assume they know me so I want to clarify...
Kahron0
Kahron0 - 10/30/2026, 7:49 PM
@SupermanFamFan - Eh, he stated that the Polka Dot show wasn’t in development, it was only an idea that was discussed.

I think with the surprising amount of content we’ve gotten from the DCU even at Year 2 compared to other cinematic universes and yet lack of Batman and Wonder Woman (and the unspoken expectation that the DCU needs to be a 1:1 copy of the Infinity Saga of the MCU down to pacing and build up) is what’s causing a lot of backlash online at least.

If we got at least Wonder Woman by now and The Brave and the Bold in the years of The Batman II’s many delays, less people would care about the projects that focus on less popular characters or a build up to Justice League
SupermanFamFan
SupermanFamFan - 10/30/2026, 8:06 PM
@Kahron0 - yeah man for me personally I never wanted a copy of the MCU because I don't like MCu despite how successful and popular it is. For me it is too mainstream for my taste so I am open to different things on DC but I still want Wonder Woman, Batman, I was originally happy for Supergirl until I actually watched it. It was that movie that I started to look at Gunn with a skeptical eye. And Lanterns too was terrible except for Kyle Chandler who was done dirty imo.

Nonetheless I feel like MoT has too much on its shoulders and DCU should actually have pumped out a little more work on its end. Maybe an extra cartoon or two, maybe a TV series with more than 8 episodes.

It just feels like DCU is going at a snail's pace for me...

12.5M or 13.5M, calling it now.

I do think it is going to have some legs this week, but next week, the legs will be chopped. Too many movies, but overall for a 2nd weekend, is pretty good considering the first weekend opening.

Yes, the legs will be chopped or in this case...GUNNED down. It would be a miracle if it lands in the top 5 after next weekend.

@MyCoolYoung - I've followed the Elizabeth Holmes investigation/case from the beginning and she is incredibly fascinating. She is a sociopathic liar, a narcissist and an absolute alpha in the fraud-business. She has no choice but to try to manipulate everyone she speaks to. I think ANY documentary about her immediately before she goes to join would be interesting - but the fact that Nathan Fielder has such an absurdist/surrealist approach to comedy makes it even richer. When you watch his shows you're always kind of guessing whether something is happening for real or whether its scripted - so the fact that Holmes is always kind of performing is incredibly crucial here. THEN to top it off - Lance Oppenheim has made some actual quality documentaries that you can trust that it will actually be a high-quality documentary with something to say - not just two whacko's talking to each other.

Just my two cents.

@MyCoolYoung - You Can See Everything? HA! I can't see NOTHIN'!! Granted I haven't checked it out yet, so that's probably why.

I read the wiki page when everyone started praising it and I don't understand either. I don't know much about the subject matter and it doesn't really interest me. But sometimes a documentary is just such a brilliant piece of cinema that it doesn't matter what it's about. I think that might be the case here. That's it's just something you have to see for yourself to understand why it's so good. I mean people are saying it should be nominated for Best Picture.

It's just, I was apprehensive about watching endgame because it was so long and I was anticipating that one heavy.. this though? I could careless. Notice I said could instead of couldn't.
