James Gunn Launching Podcast Dedicated To Revealing How Much Of 2021's The Suicide Squad Is DCU Canon

DC Studios co-CEO James Gunn has announced plans to launch The Suicide Squad: Is It Canon? — The Official Podcast, which is dedicated to revealing how much of the 2021 movie is canon to the DCU.

Who needs The Brave and the Bold and Wonder Woman when you can have The Suicide Squad: Is It Canon? podcast? DC Studios has announced its next project, and yes, it's a podcast which will reveal how much of the 2021 movie is official DCU canon.

When Disney fired James Gunn as Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3's director in 2018, Warner Bros. wasted no time in enlisting him for the DCEU. He wrote and directed The Suicide Squad, which was rated 90% on Rotten Tomatoes but only earned $168.7 million at the box office due to a pandemic-era release.

Gunn followed that with Peacemaker before returning to the MCU to conclude his Guardians of the Galaxy trilogy. Of course, at the start of 2023, the filmmaker was named DC Studios co-CEO alongside Peter Safran, and after the likes of Shazam! Fury of the Gods and The Flash were released in theaters that year, the DCEU was quickly rebooted as the DCU.

That meant saying very public goodbyes to several actors, including Henry Cavill (Superman), Gal Gadot (Wonder Woman), and Black Adam (Dwayne Johnson). However, despite the DCU being a fresh start, Gunn decided to keep several actors from Peacemaker for a Season 2 set in the same world as Superman and Creature Commandos.

The series cleverly dealt with any confusion in a recap that swapped out the Justice League for the Justice Gang, but many fans have been left wondering what from The Suicide Squad should be considered canon.

Well, this podcast will finally address what from this five-year-old DCEU movie is part of the DCU, with Gunn joined by his wife and Peacemaker star Jennifer Holland, along with longtime friend and actor Steve Agee.

Gunn's announcement has drawn mixed responses. "The fact that you have to explain things just shows you made a bad universe," wrote one fan on X, with another chiming in to say, "Your DCU is so ridiculously all over the place that you need extra podcasts just to make stuff up and try to explain things. I’d recommend starting to make good movies instead."

However, there were some positive takes, too, with one of Gunn's followers stating, "Dude, this is gonna be so fun, can’t wait to check it out." Most just want to know whether Margot Robbie's Harley Quinn exists in the DCU.

Check out the teaser for The Suicide Squad: Is It Canon? — The Official Podcast below.

@foreverintheway - Oh no, the losers and neckbeards on Reddit who spend their time trying to get thumbs up on their comments for fake "Karma" don't like one of my articles? I'm devastated. Honestly, I'll never post another article again. This hurts too much. Thank you for making me aware.

@foreverintheway - Damn, honestly, I wouldn’t even waste your time trying to engage with him at this point. I was still in the middle of writing my comment when I saw his reply to you, and I can’t say I was surprised by the reply lol

This is someone who has repeatedly responded to criticism with insults, blocked people for merely disagreeing with him, and resorted to ad hominem attacks even when the criticism directed at him wasn’t personal to begin with. Yet he wants to portray himself as someone who”couldn’t care less what Redditors and CBM users think of him”. If that’s genuinely the case, why keep coming back to argue with people and post memes in response to soft criticism? You can’t simultaneously insist that other people’s opinions are beneath you because you’re getting $$ while continually going out of your way to respond to them. And he also misses the irony of the audience his DCU coverage attracts. Almost all of the people who enthusiastically agree with his negative takes on DC are the same people who also dismiss the MCU as woke, overrated, or superhero fatigued capeshit. Not everyone criticizing the DCU falls into that camp but it does raise questions about whether his coverage is reinforcing a particular audience’s existing biases rather than offering a consistent standard for evaluating superhero movies.

At this point, I don’t think it’s worth expecting him to suddenly become receptive to criticism. You make your points, offer your own perspective, and let people judge the arguments for themselves. Beyond that, might as well sit back and watch with a mixture of amusement and disappointment 😂

foreverintheway - 10/29/2026, 10:55 AM
@Kahron0 - Oh believe me I am not expecting him to be receptive to any of this at all - he is far too childish, sensitive and reactionary to be able to actually consider any criticism. He is not only a terrible writer, but everything he says is in bad-faith just to get views and clicks. You would genuinely get more authentic articles from that FireGunn guy because he wouldn't even pretend to cater to a broader audience.

Slow clap guys...SLOW FUKING CLAP GUYS!!! DC IS BACK GUYS! WE FINALLY DID IT! After years of asking whether or not Suicide Squad is canon, there is a whole podcast dedicated to over-explaining a small blurp from an email

You know Gunn is doing a great job when he has to release a podcast about what is and isn't canon from a 5 year old movie.

I’m absolutely sure this singular podcast is somehow preventing those movies from getting made.

JoshWilding -

Wow! This sounds like maybe the most relevant and important piece of CBM entertainment in history.

I am inspired. Next will be my podcast of a fat old guy floating around the pool scarfing cookies and tequila while reading comic books.

I figure about a trillion people or so will watch that every week.

JoshWilding - 10/29/2026, 9:57 AM
@DocSpock - I mean, it sounds like an improvement over what this franchise is giving us, so I'll give it a watch! I, for one, am pleased that Gunn is devoting his time to stroking his own ego and making his 2021 movie retroactively canon while being unable to make a Batman movie in just shy of four years.

I mean the only good thing that can come out of it is whether Margot Robbie will be back as Harley.

Otherwise I feel like this Podcast is a distraction, I don't see Marvel doing Podcast every second that I know of.

To me DC needs less talk and more action, Clayface was great but MoT better be Epic otherwise...

So let me get this straight. The Suicide Squad (2021) is partially canon and the general audience are now supposed to watch it and then listen to a podcast to learn what is and what isn't canon? Just like the general audience watched season 1 of Peacemaker exist in the Zack Snyder universe and then to have that retconned in Season 2 to exist in the James Gunn universe. Warner Brothers has the rights to every character in the DC universe and yet they can never deliver a product or a series of projects that work together. It's so baffling.

"I know you. I know what you were, what you are. People don't change! You're Slippin' Jimmy! And Slippin' Jimmy I can handle just fine, but Slippin' Jimmy running the DCU is like a chimp with a machine gun! DC is sacred! If you abuse that power, audiences get hurt! This is not a game! And you have to know that on some level, I know you know I'm right. You know I'm right!"

FIRE JAMES GUNN!

Reboot the MCU and DCU

This sounds like something I'd make up as a joke...

I dream of a world where we get a big-budget 22-episode season-a-year live-action Justice League show with the original lineup that takes itself seriously but doesn't shy away from the fantastical elements of the mythology.

I know it's a pipe dream, but I have to have hope for a future where the on-screen adaptation of DC's pantheon is more than Clayface horror movies and Gorilla Grodd mockumentaries.

All things considered though, I really wish they just did a hard reboot. Or at the very LEAST actually use the Flash as a narrative soft reboot instead of having to rely on tweets and podcasts to explain canon for the nerds that care like us.

I had to check the date. Nope. Not an April Fools' joke.

This is 100% up Gunn's myopic method of operating.

Focus on quality and building the brand? Nope.

Focus on his own idiosyncratic interests as a sub-head of a major Hollywood studio at a time of turmoil and transition? Yup.
