UPDATE: Gunn has now shared an update on the status of the Waller series that was set to star Viola Davis.
"Viola would like to continue. We were strongly developing a Waller show that we never greenlit because it didn't get to where we wanted it to be. That doesn't mean it's totally out of development."
So, it sounds like there is still hope for this spin-off down the line. Maybe the show could serve as the reintroduction of Harley Quinn, Bloodsport, Ratcatcher, and King Shark?

Will Margot Robbie return as Harley Quinn in the DCU? It sounds like it'll be completely up to her!
Robbie made her debut as the manic villian/antihero in David Ayer's Suicide Squad, before reprising the role for Birds of Prey (and the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn). When James Gunn took the helm of semi-sequel/reboot The Suicide Squad, Robbie was one of only four characters from the original movie to return.
Boomerang (Jai Courtney) and Rick Flag Jr. (Joel Kinnaman) are dead, and Viola Davis' Amanda Waller is (or was) getting her own spin-off series set in the DCU. So where does that leave Robbie's take on Harley?
While the DCU did, for all intents and purposes, reboot the franchise, Gunn has cherry-picked certain elements from the DCEU projects he worked on and made them canon, so surely it would make sense to bring a major A-list talent like Robbie on board?
In a new clip from The Suicide Squad: Is It Canon? podcast, Gunn admits that bringing Robbie's Quinn back "is one of the more difficult things to justify as being canon in the DCU" with the Joker not being established. He adds that he honestly doesn't know whether Robbie wants to return to the role at this stage, but if she does, he would "bend over backwards" to make it happen and "explain it in that world."
Robbie is one of the most in-demand actors in Hollywood, so she might take some convincing to put the white face paint on again.
"It was kind of back-to-back filming Birds... and filming this, so I was kind of like, oof, I need a break from Harley because she's exhausting," the actress said back when The Suicide Squad was in theaters. "I don't know when we're next going to see her. I'm just as intrigued as everyone else is."
Whichever way Robbie happens to feel about more Harley Quinn, there is another member of Task Force X that Gunn is actively trying to bring into the DCU.
"I definitely am always looking for a place to put Bloodsport and figuring that out," Gunn said of Idris Elba's mercenary last year. "So we'll see what happens."
