Clayface Expected To Lose #1 Spot This Weekend — But The R-rated DCU Horror Movie May Have Legs

Clayface could lose the box office crown this Halloween, but a strong second-weekend hold would suggest the DCU horror movie has legs. Can its $44 million budget help it turn a profit?

Clayface opened with $24 million last weekend, but will it hold on to #1 over Halloween? Boxoffice PRO currently expects the DC Studios movie to slip to second place with a projected $10 million to $15 million haul.

A24's hit documentary You Can See Everything will likely move into that top spot with $12 million to $17 million, but as is evident from these numbers, it's going to be a very tight race. However, while Clayface isn't set to enjoy a huge Halloween bump, the numbers suggest the R-rated DCU title may have legs.

If it gets to $15 million, that's a drop of only 37.5%, which is rare for a superhero movie. $10 million would be closer to 58.3%, and only a result on that lower end would be considered cause for concern.

Clayface's A- CinemaScore and 94% rating on Rotten Tomatoes' Popcornmeter seem to be helping. Plus, with a $44 million production budget, the horror movie doesn't have as much on the line as Supergirl, for example.

If the film falls 37.5% to $15 million, that would be a promising hold. A 50% decline to $12 million would be fairly ordinary, while a 58.3% drop to $10 million would suggest that the opening weekend was front-loaded. Ultimately, anything close to $15 million would point to the movie having a decent chance of developing legs.

However, there's an important distinction between a good second-weekend hold and a profitable theatrical run. A strong U.S. run will be hugely beneficial, but Clayface needs to generate enough worldwide box office to cover not just production costs but also marketing and the exhibitors' share of ticket sales. The potential issue there is that Clayface had a soft start internationally with a $19 million debut.

In Clayface, Matt Hagen’s meteoric rise from Gotham street kid to Hollywood leading man is tragically cut short when a local crime boss’s actions leave him horribly disfigured. Abandoned by his team and with nothing left, Matt seeks out a cutting-edge treatment that miraculously returns him to his former self, but also unexpectedly affects his grip on reality, spiralling him down a destructive path of all-consuming revenge.

The movie stars Tom Rhys Harries in the title role of the "cult-favourite" villain from Gotham's rogues' gallery. The cast includes Naomi Ackie, David Dencik, Max Minghella and Eddie Marsan, as well as Nancy Carroll and Joshua James.

We concluded our Clayface review by saying, "Tom Rhys Harries shines in Clayface, an uninspired and unoriginal movie that's too light on horror and lacking in comic book personality to be anything but forgettable. It should have been a game-changer for the genre; instead, it's DC's Morbius moment."

Directed by James Watkins from a screenplay by Mike Flanagan and Hossein Amini, Clayface is now playing in theaters.

Regardless of how well it does financially it was a great movie but the only crux is will it only further embolden James Gunn to be a lazy CEO and talk us to death with his tweets and now a Podcast?

@SupermanFamFan - lazy? He's editing a Superman Saga movie while writing the next one AND talking us to death with his tweets and now a Podcast.

That's not lazy. It's not good either but it's not lazy...

@UltimaRex - Maybe I used the wrong word but too me it seems like at the very least he should do less talking on social media at least for now. It comes off weird imo you do not see Feige do this much at all

12.5M or 13.5M, calling it now.

I do think it is going to have some legs this week, but next week, the legs will be chopped. Too many movies, but overall for a 2nd weekend, is pretty good considering the first weekend opening.

@MyCoolYoung - I've followed the Elizabeth Holmes investigation/case from the beginning and she is incredibly fascinating. She is a sociopathic liar, a narcissist and an absolute alpha in the fraud-business. She has no choice but to try to manipulate everyone she speaks to. I think ANY documentary about her immediately before she goes to join would be interesting - but the fact that Nathan Fielder has such an absurdist/surrealist approach to comedy makes it even richer. When you watch his shows you're always kind of guessing whether something is happening for real or whether its scripted - so the fact that Holmes is always kind of performing is incredibly crucial here. THEN to top it off - Lance Oppenheim has made some actual quality documentaries that you can trust that it will actually be a high-quality documentary with something to say - not just two whacko's talking to each other.

Just my two cents.

@MyCoolYoung - I think the infatuation comes from its experimental metaness combined with the documentary format in that it plays more like a psychological narrative then regular documentary

Plus the marketing for it has been great in that the first trailer weren’t viral and people created memes of it so it’s been riding the social media buzz and critical acclaim to the top.

Also there are fans of Nathan Fielder who co-directed the documentary and is in it aswell people just being interested in Elizabeth Holmes.

Clayface is dope - good standalone movie that does good service to the actual character of Clayface, good transition from good/troubled guy to the villain we know.
