Clayface may not have been the smash hit DC Studios was hoping for, but the James Watkins-helmed horror movie has continued to perform relatively well over the past few weeks and has now passed its break-even point at the box office.

According to the latest updates, Clayface has now taken in $56.6 million domestically and $52.4 million internationally for a global total of $109 million.

This may sound like small potatoes when compared to other recent superhero movies, but with a reported production budget of $44 million, Clayface must now be considered a minor success for the studio.

The gruesome R-rated movie has most likely peaked, however, as Godzilla Minus Zero has stomped to the top of box office charts with $31.6 million from 3,254 theaters.

“We’re so happy to see audiences embrace ‘Godzilla Minus Zero’ at an unprecedented scale for an international film,” says Chance Huskey, VP of distribution for Gkids, which distributed the movie in the U.S. “This landmark release is the result of a thoughtful campaign by Gkids and Toho that emphasized the ‘must see’ intensity of the theatrical experience.”

Meanwhile, The Cat in the Hat took in just $10 million from 60 international markets for a global start of $30.5 million. The movie received an A CinemaScore, so there is still time for it to rebound; but with a $92 million budget, the animated adaptation will likely rank as another dud for Warner Bros.

We have heard that James Gunn and Peter Safran have tentative plans in place for more smaller-budgeted movies focusing on minor characters, but it remains to be seen if Clayface has performed well enough for Skydance to give them the go-ahead.

DC Studios’ first-ever foray into the genre, Clayface is a horror thriller from director James Watkins, starring Tom Rhys Harries in the title role of the Gotham City villain. Clayface unravels one man’s horrifying descent from rising Hollywood star to revenge-filled monster in a story that explores the loss of one’s identity and humanity, corrosive love, and the dark underbelly of scientific ambition.

The film also stars Naomi Ackie, David Dencik, Max Minghella and Eddie Marsan, as well as Nancy Carroll and Joshua James. James Watkins directs from a screenplay by Mike Flanagan and Hossein Amini, story by Flanagan, based on characters from DC.

Clayface is produced by Matt Reeves, Lynn Harris, James Gunn and Peter Safran, with Michael E. Uslan, Rafi Crohn, Paul Ritchie, Chantal Nong Vo and Lars P. Winther executive producing.

@PapaSpank54 - I mean, given that 2 of the three movies have been critical and box office successes, that's actually not too bad.
(Hell, that's pretty much the same way the MCU started - up to and including the second film(s) not doing too hot in spite of actually being underrated.)

@asherman93 - Well according to most online comic book movie and cinematic universe fandom on the site, the MCU was a breakout runaway success from day one in 2008 with no bumps or underperformance or snares or negative developments within two years whatsoever…

So yeah 🫠

Wow. A low budgeted WB movie from DC's new failing universe barely broke even!
What a triumph!

It’s going to make well more bones on home release/digital. Was always going to be the case, especially given the early reception to the movie.

Hope we get more horror projects for the DCU. Scheduled around Halloween, like this one was. Would love a Scarecrow project.

Both Superman and Clayface are excellent movies and the shame is on audiences not going to see those films in higher numbers.

P.S. somebody please check on Josh W. He's either dealing with anxiety attack or is writing 4 counter narrative-forcing bullshyt articles all at once.

THERE HAS NEVER BEEN A GROUNDED CHARACTER DRIVEN DC FILM THAT HAS LOST THE STUDIO MONEY OR CRITICALLY EMBARRASSED THEM. James Gunns brand of comic book films has NEVER made a billion dollars outside of the outlier that was Aquamam. The BIGGEST mistake in the history of cinema was not combing the Dark Knight Trilogy and Man of Steel and using them as a blueprint for the DC universe.
