Clayface Ties With Batman Begins & The Dark Knight As Highest Audience-Rated DC Movie On Rotten Tomatoes

Clayface was met with a mostly positive reception from critics, and it looks like cinemagoers are even more taken with DC Studios' R-rated horror movie...

The largely positive critical reception that awaited Clayface when the review embargo lifted was somewhat surprising after decidedly mixed social media reactions, and it looks like cinemagoers are fully embracing DC Studios' first horror movie.

Clayface is "Certified Fresh" on Rotten Tomatoes with a very respectable 75% - making it the highest-rated solo villain movie ever - and boasts an Audience/Popcornmeter Score of 94% based on over 500 ratings.

This ties James Watkins' R-rated comic book movie with Batman Begins and The Dark Knight as the highest audience-rated DC-based movie on the aggregator (even the $1 billion-grossing Joker only reached 89%).

Whether this audience support will translate to ticket sales remains to be seen. Clayface took in $3.5 million from Thursday previews, and is currently looking at a solid enough $25M - $35M opening weekend at the domestic box office.

With a reported production budget in the area of $40 million, it will need to make over $100 million worldwide to turn a profit. It's certainly achievable, and positive word-of-mouth could propel the movie to surprise hit status.

DC Studios co-CEO Peter Safran recently confirmed that, even though we don't see him or hear anyone mention him, the DCU's Batman is active during the events of the movie.

"We haven't really talked about what he's doing during the actual events of Clayface," he told Collider. "But Batman is there. This is the introduction to the live-action Gotham. We showed a silhouette of Batman in Creature Commandos, so you know he's around, but this is the first step into the world of Gotham for us."

Do you plan on seeing Clayface this weekend? Let us know in the comments.

DC Studios’ first-ever foray into the genre, Clayface is a horror thriller from director James Watkins, starring Tom Rhys Harries in the title role of the Gotham City villain. Clayface unravels one man’s horrifying descent from rising Hollywood star to revenge-filled monster in a story that explores the loss of one’s identity and humanity, corrosive love, and the dark underbelly of scientific ambition.

The film also stars Naomi Ackie, David Dencik, Max Minghella and Eddie Marsan, as well as Nancy Carroll and Joshua James. James Watkins directs from a screenplay by Mike Flanagan and Hossein Amini, story by Flanagan, based on characters from DC.

Clayface is produced by Matt Reeves, Lynn Harris, James Gunn and Peter Safran, with Michael E. Uslan, Rafi Crohn, Paul Ritchie, Chantal Nong Vo and Lars P. Winther executive producing.

This is why audience scores are irrelevant; everything is either a 0 or a 10.

@TheJok3r - And with positive OR negative reviews, people leave a score and have no history of rating other movies.

I notice it with review bombing and then movies that are heavily praised.

@TheJok3r

Agreed. Audience scores are straight trash unless you're looking at Letterbox'd, and even that's getting so known that the plebes are in on it now, too.

I don't think it's on par with either of those movies but I ultimately ended up liking it.

I do think it would work better if the universe was more established with the heavy hitters.

@thedrudo - Maybe they should have marketed it as a Battinson spin-off.

Thank you Mark! Thisnis how you write an article about a positive development for a film with a little bit of cautious optimism. Instead of the bias overly negative spin of a certain colleague. To the point. Not trying to draw ridiculous comparisons. And not injecting editorial. Well written sir. Finally! A fair article written about this film.

Saw Clayface last night - expected more of a horror movie and got a pulpy, over-the-top, revenge movie. It was totally fine. Way better than any of the Sony releases, but also completely expendable.

That last shot of him was [frick]ing awesome, tho. I wanted more of that.

@cincymovieguy - Personally I was happy that it was more of a revenge pulp movie, Im glad it didn't lean into the horror because that bores me.

And yeah bro the last shot and soundtrack to go with it was truly amazing....

Down to 93%
UltronIO
UltronIO - 10/23/2026, 3:17 PM
Meanwhile Wildwood has a 98% Audience score and a 100% Critics score. That's right 100%. And it deserves it.

Comparing the two Clayface is not even 7.5% of what Wildwood is let alone 75%. And it's certainly no Dark Knight.
UltronIO
UltronIO - 10/23/2026, 3:20 PM
Wildwood is also way more dark, gritty and violent than Clayface and I'm not even joking.
(and it's also kind of a Batman villain origin movie too, for Poison Ivy)

[frick] ClayFACE, ClayMATION is what you should be watching at the cinema rn.

CLAYFACE needs roughly 120mil at the bo to break even. It's going to be close. 44mil×2 plus advertising budget of 32mil. If i had to put money on it it'll end its run just shy of a 100mil.

When looking at movies with similar performances at this point(Kraven, Morbious) there's no chance of Clayface becoming a hit. It'll be a toss up between breaking even or flop. If flop just wow DC. The curse continues. The greatest fail studio of all time🤡🤡🤡
UltronIO
UltronIO - 10/23/2026, 3:23 PM
@DCasAhobby - 32M seems low for marketing. I would have guessed 80-100M. Even for this.
cincymovieguy
cincymovieguy - 10/23/2026, 4:03 PM
@DCasAhobby

110 mil is the break even. 44 mil x 2.5 (this includes marketing).

If it makes 50 mil WW opening weekend it will have no trouble breaking 110 mil.

“I would have guessed 80-100M. Even for this.”

@cincymovieguy - It's marketed pretty heavily.
UltronIO
UltronIO - 10/23/2026, 4:40 PM
@cincymovieguy - Also as a rule of thumb marketing is twice the budget. And for these DC movies they spend a lot on marketing. $100M is a modest amount for something like this, despite it having a low budget of only $44M-ish.
cincymovieguy
cincymovieguy - 10/23/2026, 5:04 PM
@UltronIO

“Also as a rule of thumb marketing is twice the budget.”

This isn’t true at all, lmao. Blumhouse movies have much higher marketing budgets because they’re made for pennies.

The average movie has a marketing budget usually 50% to 100% of the production budget.
UltronIO
UltronIO - 10/24/2026, 4:35 AM
@cincymovieguy - For regular movies maybe but for big franchise movies like Clayface it's more like 100%-200%. I'd assume twice the budget as a rule of thumb.

For example Superman 25 had a budget of $225M and was rumored to have a marketing budget in excess of $300M, even though the official damage control later put it at only $200M. Studios are generally ashamed of how much they spend convincing people to see their movies.
UltronIO
UltronIO - 10/24/2026, 4:39 AM
@cincymovieguy - Also they are very obviously marketing Clayface like a big release so $32M is bullshit.
CristianE
CristianE - 10/23/2026, 3:20 PM
So... Is this site just against anything from the DCU? Because that review sounded like the movie was a total disaster!
UltronIO
UltronIO - 10/23/2026, 3:25 PM
@CristianE - They do make good films and when they do they are fawned over. When it's all shit, guess what, the reviews and negativity is going to reflect that.
