Clayface Unlikely To Turn A Theatrical Profit As Analyst Delivers Harsh Verdict On DCU Movie

Clayface may eventually turn a profit, but one respected box office analyst isn't convinced that's enough to call the DCU horror movie a hit. His assessment makes for uncomfortable reading.

After slipping to #2 at the North American box office this past weekend, Clayface made $1.2 million in U.S. theaters on Monday. It's a respectable result, albeit one that's kept the R-rated DCU body horror in second place behind You Can See Everything's $1.4 million haul.

This week will establish whether Clayface has legs—Halloween weekend is an anomaly, with even the biggest hits suffering a drop in ticket sales—but one box office analyst remains unconvinced.

Exhibitor Relations' Jeff Bock, one of the most respected box office pundits in the game, has shared his no-holds-barred take on Clayface's box office performance. While some have been quick to declare the DC Studios title a hit, he strongly disagrees.

"For those keeping track... here are the facts," Bock wrote on X. "DC's Clayface cost approximately $40–44M before a substantial P&A marketing spend, and WB does not keep the entire worldwide gross. At a likely $115–125M finish, it may eventually become profitable through post-theatrical revenue."

"That doesn’t make it a breakout hit or generate the (pop) cultural momentum DC desperately needs," he continued. "'Probably won’t lose money' is an awfully low standard for one of the world’s biggest IP brands. Analysis isn’t hate simply because fans dislike the conclusion. Get it? Got it. Good."

It's a harsh assessment, albeit a realistic one. Clayface is not a box office flop, but DCU fans who desperately want James Gunn's franchise to succeed—and understandably so—continue to argue that it's a hit because it had a low budget and are excusing lower-than-expected box office takings on it being a body horror.

That doesn't fly when this is a DC movie, especially as it was promoted as one. While Clayface won't lose hundreds of millions of dollars like Supergirl, it making no theatrical profit isn't a good result, and doesn't bode well for the DCU as a brand.

Theatrically, Superman likely operated at a minor net loss or barely broke even; new DC Studios owners Skydance will expect more, especially when they look at the record-breaking success Marvel Studios has found this year with Spider-Man: Brand New Day and Avengers: Doomsday. That's not a very fair comparison, but the Ellisons have acquired Paramount and Warner Bros. to make money, and their patience may wear thin.

In Clayface, Matt Hagen’s meteoric rise from Gotham street kid to Hollywood leading man is tragically cut short when a local crime boss’s actions leave him horribly disfigured. Abandoned by his team and with nothing left, Matt seeks out a cutting-edge treatment that miraculously returns him to his former self, but also unexpectedly affects his grip on reality, spiralling him down a destructive path of all-consuming revenge.

The movie stars Tom Rhys Harries in the title role of the "cult-favourite" villain from Gotham's rogues' gallery. The cast includes Naomi Ackie, David Dencik, Max Minghella and Eddie Marsan, as well as Nancy Carroll and Joshua James.

We concluded our Clayface review by saying, "Tom Rhys Harries shines in Clayface, an uninspired and unoriginal movie that's too light on horror and lacking in comic book personality to be anything but forgettable. It should have been a game-changer for the genre; instead, it's DC's Morbius moment."

Directed by James Watkins from a screenplay by Mike Flanagan and Hossein Amini, Clayface is now playing in theaters.

If you still defend the DCU and Gunn at this point, you're a certified paid shill or just a dumbass. Choose which one.

Reboot the MCU and DCU

@Feralwookiee - My comment didn't provide an opinion good or bad about flavor either way... I'm not telling anyone they're wrong for not liking the MCU or DCU.

@FireGunn - this article is another nothing burger simply to let idiots like yourself say the usual jargon.

"That doesn’t make it a breakout hit or generate the (pop) cultural momentum DC desperately needs,"
It's a hit regardless and the reviews say PEOPLE LIKED IT MORE THAN HATED IT. the same people who can't admit this is a win are the same people saying 2020 was rigged

@FireGunn - MCU brought us Daredevil, Spider-Man BND, VisionQuest, X-Men 97, and Doomsday just in 2026 alone. MCU is just fine as is bro.

@BringFFtoMCU - Born Again is an awful show, Brand New Day is overrated, Visionquest is horrendous, and X-Men 97 Season 2 was a major step down rushed mess. Doomsday will be the most slop a movie has ever slopped.

The MCU is not fine

@FireGunn - Let's just say they reboot the MCU and DCU. What exactly are you asking for and what do you want/expect it to look like so that you would be appeased? Please be as specific as you have thought out.

Profit is profit. Good WOM is good WOM.

Why can't some of you understand this? You talk shit for imaginary likes? You treat movie companies like sports teams and it's so sad. Like the console wars dweebs never grew up. Still acting like a bunch of whiny babies.

I'm so close to being the "box office update guy" because I can make articles without bias. Granted my sample size is one but still. You'll call me a DC shill when that's not true. I'm simply playing the devils advocate. I don't care if a movie flops or goes 5x. I do care about people controlling narratives just because of pettiness.

@MosquitoFarmer - I've answered this multiple times over the year with extremely in depth and long posts. I'm not doing it again. Go look for it elsewhere. There's fanfiction on the internet better than the current MCU and DCU

MosquitoFarmer

@FireGunn - No answer. What a shock.
Saying there's fan fiction is such a moot point. There's also comic runs. I'm asking what you want precisely.
If you want to avoid the discussion you're just being a troll. And you should (see: deserve) have to explain yourself so many times since you post the same tag on every comment about the same topic.
FireGunn
FireGunn - 11/3/2026, 5:25 PM
@MosquitoFarmer - The real question is, why do you expect a fan to do a billion dollar corporations job? Let's say I didn't have a plan and was just mindlessly complaining, there is nothing wrong with that. That doesn't make someone a "troll." I'm not obligated to do Gunn or Feige's job for them for free.

Anyways, I did give you an answer. I've answered this exact same question multiple times but I'll bite.

DCU:

Superman
Batman
Wonder Woman
Flash
Green Lantern
Justice League introducing Aquaman and Martian Manhunter in the movie. Not hard to do huh?

I wish people understood film financing better before yapping. Post theatrical release will definitely take this move into profitable, just not super profitable. Streaming, on-demand, and in foreign markets etc.The move did fine, especially for a $40 million price tag.

Gunn’s DCU is in trouble. But I’m sure the Gorilla Grodd TV show will save it.

Man of Tomorrow is a huge moment for him. It’ll need to be close to a billion or his DCU is done.
TheVisionary25
TheVisionary25 - 11/3/2026, 1:30 PM
@Truebeliever333 - no tv show no matter how good it does can save a universe , it’s the movies where it counts…

I feel if MOT doesn’t do well or underperforms then yes , the DCU could be in trouble then but as of now , it’s still a bit too early to tell given the universe is barely going to be 2 years old in December and has had only 6 projects thus far (3 tv shows and 3 films)
