Clayface Writer Mike Flanagan Clarifies DCU Involvement: "I Haven't Even Seen It" (Exclusive)

Carrie showrunner Mike Flanagan has set the record straight on his involvement with DC Studios' Clayface, saying that it's now filmmaker James Watkins' film. He also shared an update on The Dark Tower.

Like the scrapped Sgt. Rock movie, Clayface was an unexpected addition to  DC Studios' "Chapter 1: Gods and Monsters" slate. Still, with Swamp Thing going nowhere fast, it's certainly making good on the "Monsters" part of the DCU's first wave of titles.

Despite rumblings that Clayface was originally meant to be set in Matt Reeves' Batverse, it will be a DCU story and the first time we get to explore this version of Gotham City in live-action. Announced as filmmaker Mike Flanagan's passion project, everyone was surprised when DC Studios took his script and enlisted writer Hossein Amini and director James Watkins to take charge.

Flanagan has said that he initially worked with Matt Reeves on Clayface before James Gunn and Peter Safran got involved, later confirming that the studio decided to move forward without him when he got tied up with Carrie.

Talking to us about the upcoming Prime Video series, Flanagan reiterated that the Clayface we'll see in theaters this month is not his movie. Is he distancing himself from the DCU after Supergirl's struggles over the summer? Well, he hasn't even seen it yet, but he certainly sounds excited to.

"[Carrie] was different because Clayface had never been adapted before outside of the animated series and in a lot of the animated work, but had never made it into a feature film and certainly never as the central character," Flanagan told us about how the adaptation process differed. "And so Clayface for me felt kind of wide open. It was we were the first to kind of get in and do that."

"Now that said, Clayface, you know, very much is not mine. It’s James Watkins’ movie," the filmmaker stated. "I wrote a script I loved and I turned it in and then that’s the last... I haven’t even seen it. I’m excited to see it and see what James did with it. But that’s James’ film, and I’m so excited to see what he made."

It remains to be seen how much of Flanagan's vision for Clayface makes it into the movie. Still, he's moved on to bigger, and perhaps better, things. The prolific showrunner remains eager to reboot The Dark Tower, telling us he's doing his best to make it a reality.

"I’m trying so hard. Yeah. Believe me, I’m not the one standing in its way. I promise," Flanagan said. "But yes, that’s my sincere, sincere hope. Yeah."

In Clayface, Matt Hagen’s meteoric rise from Gotham street kid to Hollywood leading man is tragically cut short when a local crime boss’s actions leave him horribly disfigured.

Abandoned by his team and with nothing left, Matt seeks out a cutting-edge treatment that miraculously returns him to his former self, but also unexpectedly affects his grip on reality, spiralling him down a destructive path of all-consuming revenge.

Clayface will be released in theaters on October 23.

Good or bad, the DCFU V2 loses with this.

The general audience won’t bother with it or care at all.

@DocSpock - I disagree.
They're not promoting this as a superhero film. It's a horror movie coming out right before Halloween.
It'll have an average horror movie start at the box office, but word of mouth will give it legs and success off just a 40 million dollar budget.

@lazlodaytona -

I certainly hope you are right. I want this to be great and be a big box office hit.

This is why anyone that says they're hyped for this because of "Flanagan" is wrong. Flanagan has nothing to do with this film. His original pitch has been completely overridden.

Reboot the MCU and DCU

@FireGunn - so they're rebooting Flanagan's script.

It’s not surprising Josh that you would think he’s trying to distance himself from the DCU given you have this weird hate boner for it but he’s just saying it isn’t his film because while he may have written the initial script , we know that they brought on a writer who probably made some changes and Watkins himself likely gave input too so it will likely not be wholly his vision in its entirety if he had directed it & such.

Anyway , the film looks like it could be good so hopefully it turns out well critically & commercially!!.

@TheVisionary25 - lol hate boner. James Watkins made Eden Lake, and the black mirror episode "Shut Up & Dance", both of which are brilliant. Hossein Amini wrote Drive and some of The Alienist, which were also fantastic. If they're using Flannigan as a jumping off point with influences from BTAS and The Fly, I think this will be a great film because it has all the potential. I get that people are dismayed about the DCU launching Clayface before Batman, I honestly am looking forward to it. This movie looks like it has more in common visually with Reeves' Batman than anything else, but I'm sure that's a tonal choice and not an indication of it being part of that world. Which is a shame, but I think you can have stand alone movies and not have everything be part of a cinematic universe. I've seen the Sony villain movies comparison, but this, like Joker, is something different from that. I'll be watching it for sure.

We'll wait and see, but given how well Horror has done the this year and even the past couple years at the box office, I think this may be a hit with the general audience. As long as it's actually a good movie and gets some good reviews and word of mouth. It's also coming out in October, so it's set up well.

@lazlodaytona - not really, he could always claim he wrote the script if its a hit.

All Gunn's talk about waiting to do things properly and he couldn't wait for Flanagan to be done with the projects he already had on the go. smh

And Flanagan hasn't even seen it?! Come on now.

DC Studios have really [frick]ed off a lot of people in the industry. They don't treat actors and creators very well at all. Except for that James Gunn guy. He can do anything he wants whether it's good for the studio or not lol.

So cool you got to interview Mike Flanagan. 1 of my favorite directors right now and I saw all his films. Can't wait for his upcoming Carrie and Exorcist.

I wish he had done Clayface, as he said Carrie's been done 4 times already and De Palma's version is a stonecold classic. There's less room to leave your mark or to satisfy audiences when you're up against that. With Clayface he had full power to establish the character for audiences.

He keeps so damn busy doing, it's pretty impressive. I kinda want him to do more of this where he hands in the script and goes off to focus on what truly matters... finally doing The Dark Tower. That's going to take so damn long to film, I need him to get on it now. lol

If they make a solid horror film with this, AND show us the full monster mode of Clayface, then I could imagine this picking up steam after opening weekend.
