The Clayface Treatment: James Gunn's DCU Should Target These 5 Other Villains

Clayface has a solidly interesting premise, a low budget, and the broad appeal of superhero cinema working in its favor- dynamics that the DCU should lean into more.

Footage and trailers for the upcoming DC Studios Clayface release present a film that definitely doesn't look as if it cost just $40 million to produce.

It's a calculated financial strategy by DC Studios that seems all the more brilliant after the colossal misfire of the $170 million Supergirl.

Based on a script initially pitched by Mike Flanagan, the James Watkins-directed pic skips the city- or world-destroying element present in most comic book movies and instead focuses on an incredibly personal origin story for actor Basil Karlo in a film that presents itself as a modern-day take on David Cronenberg's The Fly (1986).

The film focused on Karlo and his inner circle, keeping the cast small and the sets minimal. Even the VFX are limited and practical where possible, isolated to a specific body part on Tom Rhys Harries, though the trailers hint at a crazy final act reveal where Clayface will seemingly take on his monstrous comic book form.

With early tracking pointing to a solid North American debut, and the high probability that these projection figures will likely rise in the coming weeks, it stands to reason that James Gunn, Peter Safran, and their new Skydance bosses will look to replicate this winning formula, and luckily, DC Comics is rife with villains that are tailor-made for low-budget film adaptations.

Here's 5 for now, but DC's character roster is practically bottomless. If you have a favorite underrated villain you think deserves the big-screen treatment, drop your pitch in the comments!

Doctor Psycho

Image
  • Hero Counterpart: Wonder Woman
  • Powers: Telepathy, Mind Control, Illusion Casting, Telekinesis, Dream Manipulation
  • Backstory: Born with dwarfism and a distinctively disproportionate physical appearance, Edgar Cizko grows up facing constant mockery and social isolation due to his looks. Cizko is brilliant and goes on to become a top-level psychiatrist but the ridicule he faced growing up created a deep-seated hatred for humanity. His dormant metagene becomes active when he's betrayed by the one woman he thought cared about him, a betrayal that sends him to prison.
  • The Pitch: Imagine Ex Machina meets The Invisible Man, in a sleek, suffocating psychological horror thriller where there are no good guys.  Cizko is coming after the woman who shattered his trust and the man whose fall he was forced to take. But he isn't just bringing violence, he’s unleashing a masterclass in psychological warfare. The mental mind games he constructs for them are twisted, relentless, and downright diabolical, turning their own guilt and paranoia into the ultimate trap. If you love stories where control is the ultimate weapon and trust is dead on arrival, this one will keep you up at night.

Parasite

Image
  • Hero Counterpart: Superman
  • Powers: Physical touch absorbs kinetic energy, magical properties, and superhuman abilities from his victims
  • Backstory: Rudy Jones is a menial janitor at S.T.A.R. Labs who is transformed into Parasite after exposure to intergalactic radioactive waste. He's essentially an evil version of the X-Men's Rogue, with one difference: Parasite actually NEEDS to absorb abilities and energy to stay alive- if he doesn't use his abilities, he dies. However, Rudy Jones doesn't reluctantly use his abilities; he becomes addicted to absorbing superpowers in particular.
  • The Pitch: Forget massive CGI alien invasions and world-ending black holes. At its core, this story is a raw, devastating look at a regular guy whose life implodes when he accidentally turns into a walking bio-weapon. It’s a tragic, claustrophobic thriller where every human connection becomes a death sentence and the toll it takes on a man who begins to lose his empathy.

Lock-Up

Image
  • Hero Counterpart: Batman
  • Powers: No Superhuman Powers
  • Backstory: Lyle Bolton is an Arkham Asylum prison guard who becomes tired of Batman villains always escaping and decides to take matters into his own hands. He actually appeared in Batman: The Animated Series before debuting in the comics. Disillusioned with Arkham, he often creates his own prison and has sinister plans to make sure none of Gotham's criminals escape.  The issue is that Bolton often throws in cops, judges lawyers, etc. that are not necessarily evil or lawbreakers, they're simply complicit.
  • The Pitch: Think Saw, but swap out the rusty torture devices for a lineup of Gotham’s absolute worst nightmares. This brutal, single-location thriller traps a handful of corrupt politicians and low-level crooks inside Bolton’s high-tech, custom-built death factory. As Bolton kicks back and watches the chaos unfold on CCTV, the captives try to claw their way out. The twist? Escape isn't about solving a grizzly death puzzle à la Saw, they have to survive being hunted through the dark by the likes of Killer Croc, Scarecrow, and worse.

Punchline

Image
  • Hero Counterpart: Batman
  • Powers: No Superhuman Powers
  • Backstory: A dark counterpart to Harley Quinn, this former chemist becomes radicalized by the Joker- who she thinks represents Gotham's true nihilistic society. Wanting to become like the Joker, she began creating her own version of Joker toxin and tested it on Gotham's homeless. Unlike Harley, who started out as a psychiatrist who thought she could cure the Joker, Punchline thinks he's essentially perfect and can do no wrong.
  • The Pitch: Gotham PD thinks the Joker is up to his old tricks after a wild streak of toxin-fueled crimes hits the streets. But as the bodies and the laughs pile up, the cops realize neither the Clown Prince nor Harley Quinn are pulling the strings. What starts as a chaotic, dark comedy packed with improvised weapons and slimy mob politics turns into something much more sinister and lethal when Joker starts to actually take notice of Punchline.

Intergang

Image
  • Hero Counterpart: Superman
  • Powers: Advanced Alien Technology
  • Backstory: Unlike typical street gangs or mafia families, Intergang is uniquely dangerous because it fuses Earth's organized crime with apocalyptic alien technology. A frequent thorn in Superman's side and the Metropolis PD, they have a close connection to Darkseid and DeSaad. It's most notable members are Bruno Mannheim, Vincent Edge, Whisper A'Daire, Frank Sixty, and Johnny Stitches.
  • The Pitch: It's a low-budget mafioso film that takes traditional crime family betrayal and coups and mixes it with intergalactic weaponry and planetary invasions. Think The Wire meets Terminator and Attack the Block. Lois Lane and Jimmy Olsen could also potentially serves as the audience's viewpoint, as their investigation into the rise of the "Mannheim Family" uncovers something more dire as connections to Apokolips are revealed.

Clayface is an A tier Batman villain. These are all like D tier. No thanks.
Now tell me how James Gunn still going to get fired and that that article yesterday was all double speak for Ellison going to throw him off a cliff

@bobevanz - isn’t punchline same level as Harley Quinn before turned hero ?

@dragon316 - Not even close. Before the Harley movie debut you still saw Harley stuff at Hot Ropic and would find people at bars dressed as her for Halloween. She had a cult following day 1. Its basically comparing Venom to Anti-Venom.

@KennKathleen - this is the one. Then bring him back for a Superman film.
KennKathleen

@TheFinestSmack - Ala a reversal of Batman Begins ending.

Parasite is on top of the world. No longer battling with morality, he's decided that he IS a bad guy, but these circumstances have given him happiness.

That happiness comes with a cost, and his selfishness has given him full acceptance of that price.

...then he hears a news report while lounging at thr top of the world by the poolside.

...Superman is back from ________, with an assurance to the public that he WILL put an end to the current calamities growing in Metropolis.

Roll credits...

Just gonna ignore the obvious possibilities of a Man-Bat body-horror movie?
TheFinestSmack
TheFinestSmack - 10/3/2026, 11:27 AM
@BobGarlen - that'd be incredible. Maybe this could come out after we have a DCU Batman but the film would be from Man Bats perspective with Batman in the background trying to cure him.
BobGarlen
BobGarlen - 10/3/2026, 11:31 AM
@TheFinestSmack - Just do it as a Wolfman dynamic. Batman is the barely seen figure investigating; the whole movie follows the tragic change of Kirk Langstrom. It's an easy pitch.

Lex Luthor would be a pretty easy character to do in his own movie. Start it as a rags to riches story, but by the end, it turns into a movie about jealousy where Lex is the center of all the publicity and stardom, until Superman shows up. Could show Lex being a cutthroat businessman and corporate tycoon who becomes a global megalomaniac and his obsession with ridding the world of Superman becomes his downfall.

Harvey Dent could easily adapt as a political thriller/crime movie where he portrays himself as a man trying to clean up Gotham City’s streets, running as D.A. but as he’s trying to rid the city of organized crime, he’s also deeply involved with them to help finance his campaign. He and Bruce could be close friends and Bruce worries his friend is losing it. Harvey is trying to repress his Big Bad Harv split-personality, but the stress of the campaign starts to rattle him and that side creeps out—- embarrassingly a few times. Eventually, the mob decide they don’t like being pinched, and decide to deal with Harvey ala acid in his face during a court hearing between him and Tony Zucco, and thus he becomes Two-Face and steps outside of the confines of the law to take down Rupert Thorne and clear his name—- wiping out mobsters and becoming a vigilante… until Batman shows up at the end.

Done as a solo movie, Harvey could struggle with his sides and Bruce tries to convince him that there’s still good in him by revealing his face to Harvey, but as Two-Face they scuffle and it ends up in Harvey realizing the only way he’ll be saved is if he kills both sides of him, and so he sacrifices himself. Ends with Bruce leaving a rose on Harvey’s grain on a chilly, rainy day.

Man-Bat. Another character you could easily go tragic horror.

Killer Croc. Could be a detective story where Bullock and Montoya, or Commissioner Gordon is hunting a serial killer with scales and described as a giant lizard in the sewers only to discover that the rumors are true.

TF? Lock Up? I'd rather see Man- Bat, Croc, or Solomon Grundy get the horror treatment. To each their own🤷🏾‍♂️

They didn't target Clayface. Someone had a great idea, pitched it, and Gunn felt like he had to make it. If Clayface ends up being both good and profitable, which is in doubt at this point, the formula to repeat is "when someone pitches a good idea, make that".

Man, I actually like the idea of Lock-Up. I think a grounded film centered around that character could be cool, actually. The idea of using other villains could be cool, but could also make it kinda silly on screen, imo. I picture it as more similar to The Punisher, but this guy that’s fed up with murderers & rapists getting out, maybe due to corruption in the system. Maybe even sees some rich & powerful guy finally get put away after years of avoiding consequence, only to be released not long after. Have other criminals in there that are imprisoned for longer sentences, harsher crimes, maybe they focus on them having reformed or having a big heart, and yet here’s this jackhole who happens to get out because he’s rich or connected. Meanwhile, something snaps and this Lock-Up persona takes over and he slowly becomes a vigilante, maybe like first season of Daredevil. Could be cool.

These are great ideas. Especially the Doctor Psycho one. My dream DC horror project is a series based on House of Mystery and House of Secrets. With each show hosted by Cain and Abel. Ala Tales from the Crypt. Some of the episodes could be a showcase for ideas like this.

RolandD - 10/3/2026, 4:33 PM
Interesting ideas but I don’t think this is the way to go for the DCU. Clayface made sense to me because you have an extremely reputable guy like Mike Flanagan dropping a script in your lap. I just thought that was fortuitous and a good idea but I don’t think this is the blueprint for the DCU. I do think it’s a good idea for all of these blockbuster movies to go for lower budgets though because the going isn’t what it used to be. There’s going to be some huge blockbusters like the latest Spider-Man movie but the guarantee of superhero movies making big bucks all the time is just not there anymore. 40 million too low for a serious superhero movie but 250 million is too much. There’s a lot of ground in between.
TheVisionary25
TheVisionary25 - 10/3/2026, 5:10 PM
@RolandD - I agree

Idk if it’s because of inflation but budgets have become too big and we need to go back into the 100 million + or so rather then 250.

Also I agree that Clayface happened for a number of reasons and one was that Mike Flanagan himself came to them and gave this script that they liked and even wanted him to do but the guys busy working on multiple projects hence he couldn’t

Plus it’s additional content to pad out the DCU until more things are working on development and then greenlit otherwise we would just have had Supergirl & Lanterns this year?.

Speaking of , are you watching the show?.
RolandD
RolandD - 10/3/2026, 7:12 PM
@TheVisionary25 - No I haven’t been, but I plan to. I need to take the plunge and subscribe to HBO Max. Almost everything I’ve heard or read about the show sounds great except for one thing. From what I understand Hal Jordan is a racist jerk and for me, he’s been my main Green Lantern from when I was a kid. But I need to stay true to something that I’ve been saying. I get annoyed with other users here who complain about movies or shows and it sounds like some of them get mad because a project isn’t made exactly how they want it to be made. That’s never or hardly ever going to happen. So if Hal is a racist, I won’t like it but if it’s quality show I can certainly root for John instead.
TheVisionary25
TheVisionary25 - 10/3/2026, 7:52 PM
@RolandD - he can definitely be a jerk but he is most definitely not racist , maybe ignorant at times moreso.

He’s more complex in that he’s weathered , jaded and beaten down to an extent but at his core still a hero who is good at his job which you’ll see.
RolandD
RolandD - 10/3/2026, 7:54 PM

Parasite could be cool but I personally don’t find the other appealing…

I think a Rogues movie or series could work about a team staging a big heist against a corrupt businessman in which we get their various backstories with Captain Cold being the leader.
