Digger Gets Buried With Disastrous $8 Million Domestic, $20 Million Global Opening Weekend

Digger always looked likely to bomb at the box office, but Tom Cruise's highly polarizing satirical black comedy had an even worse opening weekend than early estimates suggested...

Tom Cruise is looking at his first box office bomb in quite some time with Alejandro González Iñárritu's Digger, which arrived in theaters on Friday (if you want spoilers, you can check out our breakdown here).

Though it wouldn't be fair to call the movie a critical disaster (it's sitting at 51% on Rotten Tomatoes), reviews have been mixed/negative, with one of the more positive verdicts describing the satirical black comedy as a "unique catastrophe."

Even so, many are confident that Digger will ultimately be viewed as a misunderstood masterpiece.

Positive reviews can certainly help sell tickets, but in Digger's case, it probably wouldn't have made that much of a difference.

Digger was already looking at a disastrous launch of $12 million to $15 million in North America, but ended up taking in just $8 million in the U.S. with a global debut of $20 million.

The movie had a production budget of at least $125 million, with some reports putting it at around $160 million. Digger will almost certainly become the biggest box office bomb of 2026, but some analysts believe it's in danger of becoming one of the biggest of all time.

Cruise remains proud of the film, sharing the following post to his X account.

"Digger is officially in theaters and I am so honored to have had the opportunity to create this film alongside such talented artists. Thank you to the entire cast and crew for your dedication, hard work, and joy. The experience was truly unforgettable and I’m so proud of what we created."

Digger has plenty of other high-profile defenders, including director Guillermo del Toro.

A man. A plan. A meltdown. DIGGER. Only in theaters October 2. Academy Award-winning filmmaker Alejandro G. Iñárritu returns with his original film DIGGER, starring Tom Cruise in the title role. The most powerful man in the world embarks on a frantic mission to prove he is humanity’s savior before the disaster he’s unleashed destroys everything.

Cruise stars alongside Oscar winner Riz Ahmed, John Goodman, Oscar nominee Sandra Hüller, Michael Stuhlbarg, and Oscar nominee Jesse Plemons. Iñárritu directed from a screenplay by Iñárritu & Oscar-winners Alexander Dinelaris & Nicolás Giacobone, and Sabina Berman, story by Berman & Iñárritu and Jez Butterworth.

The film is produced by Iñárritu, Oscar nominee Mary Parent, Cruise, and executive produced by Joshua Grode.

Joining Iñárritu behind the camera are previous collaborators Oscar-winning director of photography Emmanuel Lubezki; editors Conor O’Neill and Oscar winner Stephen Mirrione; Oscar-nominated costume designer Jacqueline West; Oscar-winning makeup and hair designer Alessandro Bertolazzi; and Oscar-nominated casting director Francine Maisler; along with Oscar- winning production designer Dennis Gassner and production designer Richard Johnson, Oscar-winning prosthetic makeup designer Kazu Hiro, and composer Cosmo Sheldrake.

Fantastic movie that will be remembered as a classic kinda like Synecdoche and Strangelove. These numbers mean nothing. Cruise's best performance in years with an equally compelling performance from Riz Ahmed. Movie of the year for me.

@Ojeet78 - You mention one thing about rich a holes taking our natural resources and not caring about the consequences and you get attacked by their lapdogs. I hope Cruz doubles down and makes his next movie about another rich a hole living on a private island inviting people to his parties. What are they going to, assassinate him? Come on I mean...

@Ojeet78 - Ahhhh the fact that you mentioned Synecdoche is interesting. It’s a good one but so much symbolism and is super heady. I really liked it and it rattled around in my brain for a a long long time. So, I’m pretty down for Digger.

The reason this movie cost "$125 million" is because Hollywood is one big money laundering scheme.

I watched it and it wasn't nearly as bad as they claim. The jokes and message landed. Maybe a bit on the long side. And I think they should've included the victims point of views more, there was no one to specifically feel for and without that, a movie has no heart. But I can also understand why it's getting such unnecessary bad media, it literally explains it in the movie it's a no no to go against the elite even if they are taking us all over point of no return!

@Kadara - It was a satire about the futility of satire in these times. I did sit with it for long wondering if it was mean spirited or not but then it did sort of click that one must keep going despite it all and the movie doesnt hand hold the audience by giving them these fictional victories. Instead sit with the hopelessness and either keep the status quo going or get off our asses and do something about it. Art may not save the world but it can hold up a mirror. Very radical movie and Innaritu respects the audience by leaving the ball in our court. Unlike PTA's One Battle After Another , he isnt ending the movie by saying the kids will be alright , he's simply showing the world the way it is. The elite are already controlling the narrative. The movie is provoking you to take action.

@Ojeet78 - Exactly. It lets you know it's what it is , so what. I got the message and found it fascinating. Kinda the opposite of V for Vendetta which will be released. But let's face it, we didn't do shit before, we won't do shit again. At this point I'm just betting on AI to eliminate us all.

@RolandD - i agree

I love my MCU & such (that to me is art aswell) but it’s also nice to see something original and bold too since it expands your horizons as a person and fan of storytelling.

I'll give the movie points for style, but I'm not going to make a trip to the theater to be preached to or lectured. I'm over it.

The whole message of the film being "The world sucks and you don't matter" doesn't help either.

Tom needs to wrap it up. No one’s buying his bullshit no more. That goes for Hollywood and music industry.

Honestly , the numbers don’t particularly mean anything in the case because it’s not like it was gonna get a sequel…

I mean sure , it’s interesting for analysis & such but otherwise , what matters more is that risks like this should atleast be appreciated and admired even if one may not ultimately like or enjoy the projects themselves because as filmmaking gets increasingly reliant on IP as safeness , you lose the fearless that filmmakers of the past had in making bold creative decisions which led to the birth of so many of the stuff we love.

However as fans of storytelling & movies , we should also acknowledge that if some may not like something that you do or vice versa , no need to be a snob about it or undermine them as not being a “real fan” by saying they just love blockbuster slop or whatever (which saying shit like that in regards to art of any kind made by people is degrading imo) and try to listen & understand their POV even if you may disagree with it.

There are people that loved/liked Digger and some that disliked/hated it and that’s fine since art is subjective and may or may not connect to others in different ways…

Personally , i think this has looked kinda interesting and enjoyable so im gonna try to give Digger a shot when i can!!.
