Daredevil: Born Again Star Vincent D'Onofrio On Series Coming To An End: "It's Not Over Until They Recast"

Though he didn't confirm anything outright, Daredevil: Born Again star Vincent D'Onofrio has hinted that we haven't seen the last of the show's main characters in the MCU.

Earlier this month, we got word that Daredevil: Born Again will end after the show's upcoming third season.

The decision came around two months after Season 3 wrapped filming, with Marvel "quietly" parting ways with showrunner Dario Scardapane, whose contract was up and was not renewed.

Though disappointing, the news wasn't entirely unexpected. We had heard that Born Again would run for "at least" three seasons, but despite being very popular with fans and critics, the show was never a major ratings hit for Marvel Television, and it's now very clear that the studio is pulling back on the number of streaming projects it puts into development.

The end of Born Again doesn't mean the end of The Man Without Fear's adventures, of course, and Vincent D'Onofrio (Wilson Fisk) has now hinted that we will be seeing the main cast members again.

Though the Full Metal Jacket actor was misquoted by several fan sites, he did say, "It's not over until they recast our characters" when asked about the show's fate during a London Comic Con panel. He also said that the Kingpin still needs to "kick Spider-Man's butt."

We'd be very surprised if D'Onofrio and Charlie Cox, at least, didn't make the jump to the big screen eventually. There are rumors that Daredevil may appear in Avengers: Secret Wars, but we wouldn't count on it.

While speaking to Brandon Davis recently, Marvel TV boss Brad Winderbaum claimed that ending the show after three seasons was the plan from the beginning.

"The plan was always to make a third season, to culminate it at three," he explained. "The way we were looking at it, the original series is three seasons, Born Again three seasons. They're kind of like trade paperbacks, collections you can slot into your shelves."

However, Winderbaum then appeared to contradict himself by suggesting that if more people had watched the series, it might have continued.

"I felt like I was part of '#SaveDaredevil,'" he replied when Davis asked if the show could return down the line. "You know it's interesting the internet, it's not what it used to be even a few years ago when you could stage a campaign and get something made like that. 'Save Daredevil' is great but we also need 'hashtag Watch Daredevil'. The biggest leverage I have, and I say this all the time, is the actual viewership numbers. That's what people are looking for, that's where I get my power to be able to make something or not. I just want people to watch the show."

"The way we were looking at it: the original series is three seasons. Born Again, three seasons... and then we'll take a breath and figure out what's next for the character," he added.

A bigger shock than Born Again coming to an end was Wonder Man being cancelled after already being renewed for a second season.

"I fought for it, I don't know what to say. It's complicated,"  said Winderbaum when asked about the recent development. "Sometimes you feel like you're invincible and can make whatever you want, sometimes, you don't have leverage, it's subject to market forces that I like barely understand."

"But creatively it's one of the best teams I've ever worked with, I love that cast, I love Destin [Daniel Cretton], I love Andrew [Guest], I fought for the show, we all did. Everyone at Marvel wanted to see it happen. Maybe I'm an idiot, but I still have hope that by some miracle, there's a way to do something down the road."

Across eight gripping episodes, survival, resistance and redemption collide as the battle for the soul of New York begins," reads the season 2 synopsis. "In Season 2, Mayor Wilson Fisk crushes New York City underfoot as he hunts down public enemy number one, the Hell’s Kitchen vigilante known as Daredevil. But beneath the horned mask, Matt Murdock will try to fight back from the shadows to tear down the Kingpin’s corrupt empire and redeem his home. Resist. Rebel. Rebuild."

Daredevil is a great iconic character.

We will always need more.

Time to let somebody else take a crack at it. D'Onofrio will be hard to beat, but not impossible.

I still remember when Jack Nicholson was irreplaceable as Joker. Then Heath Ledger came along.

Series always had a short shelf life once it went from a reimagining to a continuation of the old series

@ShimmyShimmyYA - i guess that’s true…

To me i felt the original Netflix Daredevil show was cancelled because Marvel wanted to do their own shows but i do remember there being a significant drop of viewership between S1 & S2 of that iteration even though it was only a year or so apart so i wonder then how much the drop would have been for S3 which came out 2 years later?.

If it was a fresh start then perhaps they could have pulled in more new viewers but being a continuation with the same cast did limit it only to the fans unfortunately.

Hey, they came back from cancellation once, no reason to think they couldn't do it again. Although I think if it does come back, it should be with a different primary villain. D'Onofrio has been terrific, no slight against him at all. But six seasons of Daredevil, and Kingpin has been the big bad in every one of 'em. Time to mix it up.

Honestly 6 seasons of Daredevil is pretty good tbh , i just wish we got more of his rogues gallery then just Kingpin , The Hand & Bullseye but i guess those are his big 3…

At this point , i definitely think we will see these characters again but i doubt we get another series that centers on Matt so likely films whether it be the next Spider Man movie or perhaps even his own though we’ll see.

I could see BA S3 being used as a launchpad for spinoff stuff though likely maybe a Jessica Jones show/special presentation or Heroes For Hire which i would love tbh.

Anyway , fingers crossed we see all these characters again just sooner then later!!.
