Editorial: Actors that could play Dick Grayson/Nightwing in the DCEU

With the rumors of his inclusion in both/either Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice and Suicide Squad, I figured it was time for me to put together another article listing my favorite picks for another hero from DC Comics. Next up: Dick Grayson/Nightwing!

Editorial Opinion

One character that has been rumored for quite some time now - and one that I’d like to see in the DCEU - is Dick Grayson/Nightwing. This “son” of Batman, also known as the original Robin, is to me particularly fascinating. Being raised by Bruce Wayne he obiviously shares a lot of similarities with him, but Dick still manages to be so different from Bruce. So I figured since the rumors about his inclusion in the DCEU refuse to die, it is also time for me to make another list for yet another one of my favorite DC heroes.

This is how I picture the DCEU Nightwing:
He’s in his late 20s/early 30s and he’s tall, but not as tall as Affleck, preferably even shorter than Cavill. He’s handsome with dark semi-long hair. He’s obviously very athletic and very charismatic.

Here are my top picks:

Alex Pettyfer

Pros:
Looks
Height
Acting

Cons:
Notoriously hard to work with
A bit too young at 25

Look, I actually think Pettyfer is a good actor, but I also know he’s kind of famous for being really hard to work with and being really arrogant. Although, this might be a good thing as Dick is sometimes, well, kind of a dick. Plus, Pettyfer’s behavior seems to be hurting his career a bit and he might be in need of a fresh start. At 25, he’s the youngest name on my list and he might be too young for Dick Grayson, but at 5’11” he definitely fits all the physical requirements perfectly. Worth a shot?

Penn Badgley

Pros:
Looks
Charismatic
Age

Cons:
Height
Acting

Somehow Penn Badgley more or less looks exactly how I picture Dick Grayson would in real life. I think it’s mostly the hair though. Anyhow, Badgley is a very talented and charismatic actor who could easily portray a witty, but still cocky version of Nightwing. He's already been rumored to be in the running for the part, but being almost 29 years old and standing at almost 5’9”, he might actually be perfect for it.

Wes Bentley

Pros:
Looks
Acting

Cons:
Age

Wes Bentley is that actor that should have been huge, but never really was. He’s a great actor and has already appeared in several huge productions such as the Hunger Games and Interstellar. The almost 37-year-old actor also got Christopher Nolan’s nod of approval to be the new Batman, but lost out to Ben Affleck. His age might be a problem, but the 5’11” actor should still be a candidate for Nightwing and who knows, if cast he might even get to wear the cowl one day…

Ben Barnes

Pros:
Looks
Height

Cons:
Age
Acting

Look, I’d like to actually like Ben Barnes. But most of his movies are rather terrible, aren’t they? So why am I including him on my list? Well, first of all because he very much looks the part. Secondly because I do believe that he’s a pretty good actor that just keep making shitty movies. Although, he is turning 34 this year but luckily he looks a lot younger than he really is. Plus, he’s 6’1, which means he won’t look too small next to Affleck’s Batman.

Kit Harington

Pros:
Age
Looks
Acting

Cons:
Height

Kit Harington is merely 5’8” and almost 8 inches shorter than Affleck, but not only does he very much look the part, is of perfect age and acts very well: he’d love to play a superhero and he is a fan of Batman. Granted, he wouldn’t actually be playing Batman (yet), but he’d be a part of it! This 28 year old is a star on the rise and I’m sure WB/DC would be happy to see him don the black and blue/red.

Robert Sheehan

Pros:
Height
Looks

Cons:
Age

Another star on the rise, and another great candidate for Nightwing. However, Sheehan is only 27 and definitely doesn’t look to be a day older than that. In a world where Batman’s already on his (supposedly) third or fourth Robin, 27 might be a bit young. Nevertheless, Sheehan looks the part and is tall enough (6’) to be a convincing Nightwing, assuming he’d bulk up a bit.

Garrett Hedlund

Pros:
Age
Acting
Looks
Height

Cons:
Height

With Hedlund, I chose to list his height as both a pro and a con. He’s 6’2.5”, making him about an inch shorter than Ben Affleck, and taller than Henry Cavill. Sure, he’d look great in the Batsuit if they’d ever go down that road but as Nightwing, he might look a bit too imposing. Otherwise Hedlund’s more or less perfect. He’s turning 31, has the look and the acting skills needed. Is it possible to use some movie magic to actually make someone a bit shorter?

Robbie Amell

Pros:
Looks
Height
Acting

Cons:
Acting
Age
Previous DC Comics Role

We (well, at least some of us) all know Robbie is the better actor out of the Amells, but I chose to list his acting as both a pro and a con for one simple reason: he’s still somewhat untested. He’s been great on The Flash and was great in The DUFF, but it might be too early to say if he’d be good enough for a role like this. Setting that aside, rumor has it Ronnie is about to leave the DCTVU, and that means that it would a perfect opportunity for Robbie to tackle another DC hero. And he definitely looks the part for Dick Grayson/Nightwing, with dark features and a reasonably fit 5’11” frame.

Kit Harington, I think he would own the role

Not sure if he has an American accent though

@RobinHood if you read my motivation for Amell, you'll see why I put it under both. Amell's been great on The Flash and in The Duff and appears to be a pretty solid actor. He's still rather untested though, and I'm not convinced he's good enough for productions of this magnitude just yet.

After watching the second hunger games I think Sam Claflin would make a good Nightwing. I agree with you Kit Harrington would be perfect, and I don't think his height is that much of a factor with movie magic

@StupidSexyFlanders @DrKinsolving Tbh I think Harington's my top pick, despite his height. And apparently he's working on his American accent for his next project, The Death and Life of John F. Donovan.

@RobinHood Tyler Hoechlin is another good choice, I actually considered adding him to the list.

@Philip

Yeah, I think Harington would own the role, the action would be spot on, and he definitely has acting chops. He's also shared the screen with some amazing talent, I feel like he would fit right in, in the DCCU

I'm really hoping that Jason Todd is already cast too and their just hiding it from us, haha, I want to see that Joker/Jason Todd scene so bad
Philip
Philip - 7/20/2015, 7:55 PM
@RobinHood basically, my original list has 12 names on it and I decided to cut it down to 8. Hoechlin didn't make the cut because I'm not too familiar with him and felt that I couldn't make a fair judgment of him. The last thing I've actually seen him in is 7th Heaven, haven't really gotten around to watching Teen Wolf yet.

Philip - 7/20/2015, 7:59 PM
@DrKinsolving Yes, I really think that scene might be in Suicide Squad. Then again, they could use a kid/teenage actor (which is why they haven't announced anyone/no one has been spotted) for that scene and then recast him for Red Hood, as I'm assuming that scene would be a flashback of sorts.

Although, I don't know if I can take watching both Todd's death and a torture of Harleen Quinzel in the same movie. It's going to be so fricking disturbing to watch.

Philip - 7/20/2015, 8:14 PM
@DCTrinity I'm with you on Batgirl. Mostly because I've never really liked the Carrie Kelley character and I think Batgirl is pretty awesome. Although, I really hope that Gordon isn't dead yet and that Barbara isn't Oracle just yet. If the rumors about Batman and Nightwing being estranged, I could see Barbara being somewhat of a link between them.

Kit Harrington is my choice. Height isn't a problem, they could make it work.

@Philip

It definitely will be, I can't wait though, and I think the Jason Todd scene would be much more disturbing, but I really want to see it played out. We already saw the suit in B v S, so if they don't play it out in Suicide Squad it's going to be one of those things that we always wish we saw

Ayer is the perfect director to bring all this to the big screen though, can't wait

Thanks for using my pic. Check out the full fancast. That fan cast got on main yo!

Oh and 25 is too young for Robin? Ben Affleck is only 41.

Bruce shouldn't be to much older than Robin. Of course this Bruce is probably 50 so that could be an exception, but I don't think that's too young.

Kit Harrington or Richard Madden would be cool but I prefer someone who could pass as Gypsy-Romani like Tyler Posey.

Liam McIntrye is perfect IMO

@kong

I've read somewhere that Affleck's Batman is supposedly 45 in BvS, so I kind of feel like 25 would be too young for Batman's first Robin. How old would that make the already "dead" Jason Todd?

I'm thinking the most realistic timeline would be something like this:

Somewhere when Bruce was 27-30, a 14-18 year old Dick became Robin. Then maybe 7-8 years later, Dick became Nightwing and around that time a 14-18 year old Jason became Robin.

At this point, Bruce would be 34-38 years old, Dick would be 21-26 and as I said, Jason would be 14-18.

Add maybe 4-6 years (enough time for Jason to truly become Robin and for him to build a close relationship with Bruce and Alfred) and then he's killed by the Joker. That means that Jason died when he was between 18-24 years old and that Bruce would have been 38-44 years old at the time, which makes Dick 25-32 years old.

This means Jason's death took place somewhere between eight and one year(s) before BvS.

Nice, I just googled that pic, haha, I'll check out the fancast

Yeah, I feel like Nightwing being in his mid to late twenties works. I'm pretty sure Bruce started training Dick around 10 as Robin, about the same time that Bruce's parents dies when he was younger. I'm that there are different interpretations though.

Jason should be a little younger. And, all of this talk is really getting me even more excited, also, they really nailed the suit too. I'm really hoping we get to see Todd's death in Suicide Squad.... I can't even comprehend how amazing the Batman solo movie will be at this point, haha

kong
kong - 7/21/2015, 6:54 AM
If this Batman's been around 20 years, I don't think his Robins have to come in his 3 year.
Philip
Philip - 7/21/2015, 7:51 AM
@Kong @DrKinsolving I'm just thinking it would make more sense if the Robins became Robin in their teens, as seeing Batman run around with a 10 year old seems rather outlandish. It works in the comics because, well, they are comics but on film I think it'd be weird.

And obviously Bruce didn't have to take his first Robin is his third year as Batman, but my timeline is more or less just roughly estimated based on the speculation that Todd is dead and Batman's already gone through at least two Robins.

A Nightwing that is about 12-15 years younger than Bruce just makes sense to me.

A Dick/Nightwing in his late 20s/early 30s, a Jason/Red Hood in early-to-mid twenties also sets up for a teenaged Tim Drake about to eventually become Robin, and possibly even an very young Damian Wayne existing somewhere in the Middle East or wherever Ra's is currently located. It kind of makes sense, don't you think?
BigFoster
BigFoster - 7/21/2015, 8:46 AM
@Philip that is about the timeline i would go with as well, ad in an 18 year old Barbara sometime during Dick's run. Also meas Bruce never retired (terrible idea, i don't know why people like it, batman doesn't quit). And it would lead to a perfect Under the red hood movie where Jason comes back at the same time Batman finally decides to take on a new robin in Tim adding more fuel to Jason's fire.
kong
kong - 7/21/2015, 8:46 AM
No one said they want a 10 year old, they just don't have to be that old. How do you make them younger? Make Batman take them in later in his career.

a 14 year old robin is a stretch in my book.

Let's say Batman is 45 as of BvS, so he's been around since he was 25 in 1996. At this time, Jason is 1 (born in 1995) and Dick is 8 (born in 1988).

Batman adopts dick in 2000 at the age of 12, but Dick doesn't become Robin until 2004 when he's 16.

In 2006 18 year old Barbara Gordon's (Jena Malone) begins to take on the streets of Gotham as Batgirl and Batman has no choice but to include her in the bat-family.

Dick goes to Bludhaven and becomes Nightwing in 2008 at age 20. Batman takes Jason Todd in and makes him Robin in 2010 at 15 years old.

Jason dies in 2011 as a 16 year old and Barbara is crippled at age 23

Batman retires because of these events and shows back up in 2013 as a 42 year old thinking that a post-Superman Gotham will need him.

Especially with Gotham being right across the bay from Metropolis. He doesn't fight Superman until 2016 (45 years old), for whatever reason, and that's where we meet him in BvS.

So this means that as of BvS, Dick Grayson/Nightwing is 28.

Jason Todd/Red Hood is 21.

Barbara Gordon/Oracle is 28 as well.

Bruce Wayne/Batman is 45.

and Tim Drake could be born in 2002 making him 14, ready to be a 16 year old Robin in 2018's Batman standalone film.

Yeah, right on, I think that's basically what we've been saying too

I really hope we see that Joker/Todd scene in Suicide Squad though

Philip

@Kong @DrKinsolving yeah that's not too far of my own ideas, only that I l'd like them to be a bit older than Kong does.

@Kong But we're on the same page about Bruce taking Dick under his wing early, but it taking a couple of years before he's actually Robin.

The reason I want both Dick and Jason to be slightly older than you suggested is based on such small technicalities, such as Dick being just a tiny bit more mature and independent, as well as Jason feeling like slightly more of a threat if he's 25 (at his peak) than he is if he's 21.

I also think that there should be a bigger age gap between Jason and Tim than there is between Dick and Jason, because Bruce should be (rightfully so) hesitant to take on another Robin.
Plus, isn't Dick like Tim's biggest idol in the comics? If Dick's older he could almost serve as a second (adopted) "father" to Tim, one that might not agree with Bruce making him Robin etc.

Although, I'd be just as satisfied if they did it your way as if they did it mine.

@DrKinsolving and yes! I feel you. I'm so not ready to witness all this awesomeness but at the same time I just want it to be 2016 already!!

I'd love to see Red Hood adapted for the first solo Batman, with the Joker lurking in the shadows or something like that. Then have the Joker be the main baddie of the second solo Batman, Killing Joke maybe? Then I have this whole crazy idea for a third flick, not based on anything particular but it borrows some elements from well known Batman-stories. Although, if I'm honest it might actually work better as a fourth film, in order to not get repetitive. I've been thinking about posting it as a pitch on here, but I haven't gotten around to it.

Yeah, there are so many different routes to take and so much potential. I think it might be too late for The Killing Joke though, unless they do a prequel type thing, but they can definitely take influence from that, would love to see some of that "One Bad Day" dialogue played out on screen.... I'm so hyped for the Joker
