The last time we saw Joaquin Phoenix on the big screen he was playing a hulking contract killer in Lynne Ramsay's haunting You Were Never Really Here, but it looks like the Academy Award-nominated actor has slimmed down considerably to play The Joker.

With cameras set to roll fairly soon on Todd Philips' standalone take on the classic Batman villain, Phoenix was photographed while out for a stroll in New York City, and it seems evident that he's shed a lot of body weight as he prepares to step into the shoes of the Clown Prince of Crime, who is generally depicted as being rake-thin.
