The Batman Part II's Robert Pattinson On Seeing Other Batmen In Cinemas While Awaiting Matt Reeves' Sequel

Robert Pattinson says watching Michael Keaton and Ben Affleck play Batman while enduring the long wait for The Batman Part II "didn't smell very good."

The Batman came out in theaters in the United States on March 4, 2022, and The Batman Part II is currently scheduled for release on February 18, 2028.

Sure, there was The Penguin limited series on HBO in between, but that's still an unusually long wait for a follow-up to a critically and commercially successful tentpole film.

Adding to that fan frustration is the fact that The Flash was released in theaters in the United States on June 16, 2023, and saw Michael Keaton suit back up as The Dark Knight while the film also featured cameos from Ben Affleck and George Clooney as The Caped Crusader.

This was apparently equally as frustrating for Robert Pattinson, who recently voiced these feelings in a new interview with Première FR.

Pattinson shared, "There was the actors’ strike, the writers’ strike, and as a result, I didn’t work for two years. The sequel to The Batman was slow to set up... Meanwhile, I was actually seeing other actors than me playing Batman! [Michael Keaton in The Flash.] Ben Affleck in Aquaman 2... This whole affair didn’t smell very good... That’s when I decided to set up my production company."

Affleck did actually film scenes for Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom (December 22, 2023), but his role was ultimately cut from the film as the DCEU prepared to wind down.

Still, it must have been troubling for Pattinson to know this was occurring and being filmed while his own future as Batman was in an ambiguous state.

Watching other actors don the cowl while his own Batman sequel sat in limbo must have been a stark reminder of just how unpredictable studio politics can be.

The whole surreal situation underscored the perils of a major star like Pattinson relying strictly on studio IP.

Launching his own production outfit,  Icki Eneo Arlo Productions, was his way of taking back control of his career, allowing him to option books, hunt down indie scripts, and keep himself working no matter how long the studios take.

His new studio is co-producing the Possession remake, starring  Margaret Qualley, Callum Turner, Diego Calva, and Paul Dano, and the  Zoë Kravitz-directed How To Save A Marriage.

More recently, his studio co-produced the Primetime psychological thriller that features Pattinson as To Catch a Predator host, Chris Hansen.

the trailers are really going to have to pique my interest in this for me. The Batman wasn't bad...wasn't the best either. I've said it a hundred times, but I'll say it again, ditch the "grounded, real world approach" and bring in the fantastical era. Give me the tall, skinny Joker with the elongated nose and chin! Bring in the white eyes on the mask. I'm tired of grounded. Give me gritty, dark, and supernatural. A Batman movie in the style of Spider-Noir would be great.

@ProudPatriot76 - I think Gunn's version almost HAS to be the fantastical era. No way we get yet another grounded and gritty version.

@ProudPatriot76 - Nah disagree, this film concept worked because it was even more realistic than Nolan's trilogy. WB wanted to make it as grounded like his 2 prior planet of the apes films. I wouldn't be surprised at the end of the trilogy or series of Reeve's Batman films if they kill Batman "killing joke style" where some random fan just randomly snipes him. Reeves killed Caesar in planet of the apes trilogy too because the story he wanted to tell was over and wouldn't be surprised if it happens in Batman.

You can leave the goofy shit to the DCEU and DCU as thats where ridiculous stuff fits in.

@mastakilla39 - Love that artwork. But it's not actually from the Killing Joke. It was a short called "An Innocent Guy" that Brian Bolland originally wrote and illustrated for the collection called "Batman: Black and White. However, this colorized version was eventually included in the Special edition of The Killing Joke as a bonus story, though not part of or connected to the main story.

@Patient2670 - Yes, I know that. I got the Hard Cover of Killing Joke in my collection. Both stories just go so well together especially if you take the ending of Killing Joke as Batman killing joker. If one dies then the balance of Gotham is disrupted so eventually someone is going to Kill Batman and it can be a nobody or a sick fanboy.

@TheFinestSmack - You would think, but some go on and on about want to escape at the movies...and then proceed to watch a "grounded" comicbook movie. I don't think Gunn's universe is grounded by default though given what we've seen so far with Superman, some areas are just more fantastical than others.

@mastakilla39 - I get what you're saying, and can see the symmetry in it. I guess I just never subscribed to that interpretation since Alan Moore who wrote it says that Batman didn't kill the Joker.

The first movie was pretty good. It might have been great if they had edited out about 30-40 minutes of boring bloat.

They have had plenty of time to get it right. We need to see something really epic, and they have a great cast.

Show us the money!!!!!

@DocSpock - I have hopes for number 2, but man trying to do a re-watch on the first one the other week, and I couldn't even finish it. It's not a bad movie or a bad version of Batman, it's just so long for no reason. Completely agree, they could have cut about a good half hour from it.

I feel it’s an understandable reaction imo , better to go out there and make it happen yourself then wait for others to do so…

Anyway , I’m glad he’s back though in the role since Pattinson is my favorite live action Batman (while Bale is my favorite live action Bruce Wayne) so I can’t wait to see him in Part 2 aswell as the film itself!!.

@TheVisionary25 - I can respect that, but I'm over Batman in training. I just wanna see Batman. For better or worse, that's what they tried to do in the DCEU with Affleck and Keaton.

It was pretty weird for audiences too.

It did totally flop. Gunn's DCU Bats will probably flop too. The GA don' want to [frick] around with multiple versions at the same time.

@ObserverIO - If WB was going to allow Gunn to use Batman, it would have happened by now. No company is going to have its own character competing against itself in two different franchises. The Batman made close to $775 million as a reboot and within a limited theatrical run, so Batman II is very likely to cross the billion $$$ mark; it would be financial suicide to start a completely new franchise when the one they have is doing so well.

@ObserverIO - the DCU bats wont flop. Far from it.
