THE BATMAN: Warner Bros. Has Tested Two Cuts Of The Movie, "One With A Certain Actor, One Without"

There have been rumblings about Eternals star Barry Keoghan potentially playing The Joker in The Batman, and a new report may shed some light on whether we'll end up seeing the Clown Prince of Crime...

While it was initially reported that Eternals star Barry Keoghan had joined the cast of The Batman as Detective Jim Gordon's partner, Stanley Merkel, there have been indications lately that he may be playing The Joker. It's certainly easy enough to imagine the Irish actor doing the Clown Prince of Crime justice, but is it a little soon to return to that particular well?

The Joker has always been part of the Caped Crusader's big screen adventures, while the past few years have seen the villain appear in a Suicide Squad movie and even his own solo outing. Many fans are ready to move on to other bad guys, and a new story from The Hollywood Reporter may shed some light on how Warner Bros. is approaching that predicament.

While the trade is unable to confirm whether Keoghan is playing The Joker, they do reveal that "Multiple sources tell us that Warner Bros. has been testing two different cuts of The Batman, one with a certain actor, one without. And the final test screening occurred last week, with the decision now made as to which version the studio likes, says one source."

Reading between the lines here, it sounds an awful lot like there's a version of The Batman with Keoghan as The Joker, and one without. Seeing Matt Reeves' take on that character would be interesting, especially when you think about how the likes of Riddler and The Penguin have been reinvented by the filmmaker. However, another clash with the Harlequin of Hate feels a tad redundant.

The Batman is set to be released in theaters on March 4, 2022.

I wouldn't mind Keoghan as the Joker if he does a good job but I'd also understand WB being wary of a rather fresh actor in such a coveted role. Pretty sure some WB execs are fuming at not having a huge-name actor in the role

I mean it would be cool to see the Joker, but I don't think it would be the best move. Enough villains are already in it. We wouldn't want a Heath Ledger type situation, where Batman is totally outshined in his own film.

@UXASIS - @UXASIS - I agree with everyone in not having another "Joker movie" for now, but I am open to having Joker in the movie. Small role or small name drop. It's time to give other villains the time to shine, but we can't forget the joker is THE greatest Batman villain and in an in world explanation he should be there already. Batman is early in his career here but if he has already faced the Riddler, Catwoman, Penguin and others... he certainly should have faced the Joker by now as well.Give him a cool short Hannibal Lecter style scene where Battinson goes question him in jail, or a name drop where it was clear how much of a headache he was for Battinson at some point in the past.

@Doomsday8888 - Only one villain can stand up to the dark shadows of brooding justice.

I mean Joker is THE villain, but Batman has so many awesome rogues, why do they always choose the most famous (even when he had a movie two years ago).

I hope I get to live to see a cool movie Deathstroke, Clayface, and Azrael.

Keoghan as Joker sounds interesting, but I think having the Joker already might just be too early. Enough other rogues like Clayface and Freeze that could be done too.

@bkmeijer -
Definitely too early. I would stick to other villains at least for the first 2-3 films instead of immediately pulling out the Joker card, as tempting as that may be.

I would prefer if they just stuck their artistic vision with The Batman instead of the studio inserting/taking out characters and trying to market test it like another assembly line product. This has the potential to be the next Nolanverse.

Joker has been done to death, leave that character alone for a while. The movie has enough villains as it is

Me and my friend saw Killing of a Sacred Deer at a film festival and just sat through the whole credits awestruck in silence. Keoghan is an excellent young actor, and has the potential to be an obscenely scary Joker - especially with Reeves behind the camera.
Also Colin Farrell was incredible in that film and I'm so excited to see him knock The Penguin out of the [frick]ing park. This film makes every other upcoming live-action CBM look amateurish lol

I love the joker as much as the next guy but we don't need him yet. Wait till at least the 3rd movie minimum. Batman has an insanely huge rouges gallery so we need to see more of it. Let's get some characters we haven't seen yet or who should get a good do over.

A cut has Lincoln March as a candidate for mayor of Gotham City

The murder of some corrupt politicians by Riddler, paves the way for March to be elected.

At the end of the movie, Bruce Wayne meets Lincoln.

He’s playing Condiment King. I am a trusted source from Reddit and have been known to leak concrete spoilers.

There is very strong evidence that Keoghan is playing Condiment King.

And I base this on absolutely nothing.

One with Batman one without Batman.

Its probably Joker,I wouldn't mind seeing some villains we haven't seen before or as often as The Joker.
