Why Exactly Is The BATMAN v SUPERMAN: DAWN OF JUSTICE Teaser Trailer So Underwhelming?

The first teaser trailer for Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice leaked last night, but the response has been mixed. What is it about this first look at the movie which is ultimately so disappointing? Read on for my thoughts and to cast your vote on the divisive preview...

Last night, the first trailer for Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice found its way online. However, it was via a camera phone in a South American theater rather than through official channels, and it has since been viewed millions of times (the preview is still online and can be viewed here). There's been talk of this being an international trailer and extra footage being shown at those IMAX screenings on Monday, but chances are that it was the version set to be released online next week.

It's been incredibly popular - if you were here on CBM last night, you'll know that the site could barely handle the way it was being hammered by traffic - but despite that, why did our first look at the most highly anticipated movie of all-time feel so underwhelming? I actually liked it. Lex Luthor's line about devils coming from the sky in reference to Superman is excellent (and just the kind of great dialogue you would expect from Argo's Chris Terrio), while that confrontation at the end - "Tell me, do you bleed? You will." - was nothing short of epic. Despite that, it felt like it was missing something. As a teaser trailer, it undoubtedly works. It teases how the world views Superman, it teases this new Batman, and it teases the fight between the two. What is it lacking then?

I think the surprise factor is a big part of why it somewhat disappoints. We saw that final confrontation when it was shown and posted online from last year's San Diego Comic-Con. As a resuly, a line of dialogue and Superman landing makes it no less familiar to fans who watched it dozens (hundreds?) of times already. The same applies to the Superman statue which we've already seen on the set of the movie. We know what both Superman and Batman look like by now too, so the brief glimpses of them aren't mind-blowing either. If anything, the Batwing is probably the biggest reveal.

Play this trailer in front of a regular moviegoer and it will work. For comic book fans though, it's missing the kind of stuff which will leave them talking for weeks. If I lived near one of the participating IMAX theaters, I'd probably go for a few seconds of extra footage and some free swag, but creating an event around this doesn't seem like a smart move, especially as the reaction on social media (and even CBM) has so far been mixed.

Being "released" on the same day as the Star Wars: The Force Awakens probably didn't do this first look at Batman v Superman any favours either, especially as that trailer did such a great job of intiguing/pleasing fans and regular moviegoers alike. This teaser was also joyless, and while that tone mostly worked for Man of Steel, it now seems like the DC Cinematic Universe is going to be a very dark and depressing place to spend time in when compared to Marvel (a company which manages to balance serious drama with humour and levity). I didn't want to hear the two leads cracking jokes here, but this was bleak, and while it would be unfair to make assumptions on the movie's tone based on this preview alone, "dark", "realistic", and "gritty" are words we've heard a lot from Warner Bros. execs. Do we want more superhero movies in the vein of The Dark Knight?

I'm still excited about the movie, and can't wait to see more from it over the coming months. I also have no doubt that the next trailer will be the one to truly blow us all away, and expecting the Justice part of Dawn of Justice to show up in a teaser was expecting a bit much. However, I can't help but feel that there would be a lot more buzz around this teaser if it had ended with Wonder Woman standing in front of Batman and Superman instead of such a familiar sight. Overall, it just seems like a shame that this first look has left so many thinking Batman v Superman simply looks good rather than creating the kind of excitement and postive discussions that other recent trailers have. This is just a teaser, yes, but it's an underwhelming one for a movie with so much potential.

What do you think?

I wouldn't look at the post here on this site or at IMDB to get an accurate opinion on the trailer. You should look at how many theaters are filled as a result of the per-screening and how many hits the trailer eventually gets on YouTube. If it gets close to or beats out AoU's number of views, then that's saying a lot.

I'm disappointed with the direction they're going with. But hey, that's just me, I loathe TDKR with a fiery passion so ya'll might love it.

The "problem" with the Batman v Superman trailer may not be the trailer itself, but the fact that it's a trailer for Batman v Superman, a premise that apparently many in the Internet community already dislikes. (Note that similar teasers for movies like Avengers: Age of Ultron didn't receive this much criticism). Then there's the fact that BVS is the sequel to the oft-criticized Man of Steele. It's not surprising that the super fans that were so disappointed with Steele are quick to write off anything and everything to do with its sequel.

this movie is utter shit due to many reasons Ben Afflecks performance was just awful including Jeremy irons voice over in the trailer wasn't something that tell me it's Alfred but the fault has to go to Zack Snyder once again being a terrible director for this movie and deserves to be shut down.

So how it is ''Underwhelming'' ?

What are you an idiot? So you just decided for all of us that a poor quality leaked version of the trailer is underwhelming? Did you go on five other websites and based on a couple dozen comments made that incredibly hasty assumption. How can you gage the reaction caused by a full blown HD Star Wars teaser versus something that was shot in a movie theater and which is out of focus for the most part? I really hope this article gets taken down, it reflects poorly on every comic book movie fan. You sir, have failed.

The combination of terrible quality+same day as star wars+lack of surprise or presentation didnt help at all. I still very much enjoyed it. I loved the voiceovers (especially Neil Degrasse Tyson) it actually teased some plot points for us. There still is a lot we dont know that they can save for later.

It wasn't terrible, considering it was low-quality. Just not a fan of Batman's voice, albeit better than Bale's voice.

Everything I read on the website here was overwhelmingly positive. Personally I felt it was extremely underwhelming, but everyone on the first page seemed to be having nerd orgasms. Go figure, I guess the DC fans are just really really desperate to have something positive to talk about.

"Well, that was amazing, eh?" "but that's definitely an effective teaser."

Your exact words on the article where the trailer leaked Josh. Now I understand that things may have changed. But it makes this article look like a bit of a flame war starter.

But aside from that little inconsistency, i do love this trailer, it shows what the themes of the movie are going to be without showing too much. I love that, at least from what it seems there will be more to the movie other then superman and batman Punching the shit out of each other.
