BLACK ADAM Ended Up Being A Surprise Hit In The UK Last Year By Topping DVD Sales Charts

Black Adam may have been considered a flop when it was released in 2022, but in the UK last year, the DC Comics movie starring Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson proved to be a surprise hit in terms of DVD sales.

Barbie may have been the biggest movie at the box office in 2023, but in the UK, it was unable to match one of 2022's biggest superhero movie flops: Black Adam. Well, in terms of DVD sales at least.

Variety is reporting that Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson's DCEU blockbuster earned the top spot on the sales charts with 80,000 units sold since its release on January 16. Barbie, on the other hand, shifted a still-impressive 66,428 units but wasn't released until October 23.

However, the Margot Robbie-led Barbie didn't even crack the top five as John Wick: Chapter 4 came in at second place, with Elvis, Top Gun: Maverick, and Oppenheimer not far behind.

In terms of Blu-ray sales, Oppenheimer was #1, with Avatar: The Way of Water, John Wick: Chapter 4, Black Adam, and Mission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning Part 1 following. Why did more people buy Black Adam on DVD? Either they don't care for superheroes in HD or wanted to go with the cheaper option.

Before writing Barbie off as a disappointment, though, it's worth noting that it actually led the UK's overall home entertainment charts (which combines Digital with physical media) and dominated with a whopping 700,000 units sold or rented.

"Come for The Rock’s pitch-perfect take on Black Adam and stay for an unmissable post-credits scene," we said in our Black Adam review"Then, just try to forget everything else, because this brainless, brawny superhero movie is not the fresh start the DCEU desperately needs."

Despite Black Adam's success in terms of DVD sales, there are currently no plans for a sequel. The movie was a bigger hit than all of 2023's DCEU movies, but Johnson parted ways with DC Studios when it was seemingly made clear to him that James Gunn and Peter Safran had no plans for the powerful anti-hero.

Is Black Adam in your DVD collection? Let us know in the comments section.

In ancient Kahndaq, the slave Teth Adam was gifted the almighty powers of the gods. But he used those powers for vengeance and was imprisoned. Now, 5,000 years later, he is freed and once again wields his dark sense of justice onto the world.  Refusing to surrender, Teth Adam is challenged by a team of modern-day heroes known as the Justice Society—Hawkman, Doctor Fate, Atom Smasher and Cyclone—who seek to return him to eternal captivity.

Dwayne Johnson stars alongside Aldis Hodge as Hawkman, Noah Centineo as Atom Smasher, Sarah Shahi, Marwan Kenzari, Quintessa Swindell as Cyclone, Mohammed Amer, Bodhi Sabongui, and Pierce Brosnan as Doctor Fate.

Black Adam is now streaming on Max and available on, you guessed it, DVD and Blu-ray.

Last movie from DC to almost cross 400mil...

Crazy how so much changed since then.

Hieracrchy did change to "very mid" Maybe Aquaman 2 will top it...but still MID. Hey at least we got Cavill back for a quick second before Gunn yanked the cape off him.

@UniqNo - We were all saying they'd hit rock bottom (and not just because it was a good pun) and then 2023 DC was like "Hold my beer".

I didn't hate the film but my hatred for that kid character was enough to ruin it for me. They gave him way too much screen time that should have gone to the other characters.

@HashTagSwagg - I'm right there with you. Didn't like the kid either but overall, I liked the film. Wasn't nearly as bad as critics have said. They definitely should have put some type of connection to Shazam to set up a battle with Shazam and Superman vs Black Adam in a sequel.

@marvel72 - Same! That adopted family DEI gimmick got old in a hurry.

The first one was a happy accident and slightly above average. The second one was Full Retard.

If there are 27 Shazam kids, WTF is the point? They're tougher than the goddamn JLA at that point.

Was really an indication of how off the rails they let the DC movies get. Letting a personality dictate a character to the point that it’s just a vanity project. He could have been a fun Black Adam if he’d actually played the character and not his ‘bad-ass Superman’ character he wanted to play

@MarvelousMarty - I liked all the JSA. Was cool to see characters who really can't lead a film on their own but get some decent exposure on their characters.

DVD sales? Let's face it... It's pretty much only fanboys who still buy DVDs. Makes sense that Black Adam would do well relative to most other movies.

Actually I did have a battered Mars Bar once. It was gorgeous, no lie. But if you're anywhere close to a heart attack at all, it's probably instant death. But also probably worth it. So good.

They are now called Snickers Almond since they bought that candy company. I eat them all the time. They go great with tequila.

@AmazingFILMporg - wasn't as bad as a lot of you say. The opening was dull and the kid annoying, but overall I didn't feel it was a waste of a movie. and I still like Johnson for BA. He looks and fits it well.
