IGN Comics have revealed a pile of information about the forthcoming release of the Black Panther on DVD, in a six episode series that stars Djimon Hounsou as Black Panther; Jill Scott as Storm; Kerry Washington as Princess Shuri; Alfre Woodard as both Dondi Reese and Queen Mother; Carl Lumbly as Uncle S'Yan; and the living legend himself, Stan Lee, as General Wallace.

Here is the official synopsis:

"Deep in the heart of Africa lies Wakanda, an advanced and unconquerable civilization. A family of warrior-kings possessing superior speed, strength and agility has governed this mysterious nation as long as time itself. The latest in this famed line is young King T'Challa, the great hero known worldwide as the Black Panther."

"Now, outsiders once again threaten to invade and plunder Wakanda. Leading this brutal assault is Klaw, a deadly assassin with the blood of T'Challa's murdered father on his hands, who brings with him a strong army of super-powered mercenaries. Even with Wakanda's might and his own superhuman skills, can the Black Panther prevail against this deadly invading force?"

And here are the bonus features which will be included in the set:

-Looking Back at Black Panther with Reginald Hudlin
-Exclusive Music Video
-Trailers

The DVD will retail at $14.97 and comes packed with a unique replica of comic book-style plastic sleeve packaging that "bridges the comic book to DVD concept." It's set to be released on January 18, 2011.

@AllPurposeNaji
It's a motion comic.

I just can't get into these motion comics. They are done exactly the same way Marvel did the Thor, Capatain Amereica, and FF cartoons back in the 60's. They were the original "motion comics". Jack Kirby art and all!!

The art is based on John Romita Jr. so......huh?

I saw a panel for this announcement at Comic Con in 2008! WTF? Took long enough...

Its a motion comic of JRJR run on the previous volume of Black Panther.. so its not proper cartoon animation its like the other Marvel Knight motion comics (Astonishing X-Men, Iron Man: Extremist)... this came out on BET like a year ago.

They didnt have the rights to use Rhino so they changed him for Juggernaut

Weiner...ugh I can't say it. I've watched the show and it is excellent. It's different, a cross between full animation and animated comic. It probably had budget restrictions because he's not known to the mainstream audience. It's smart, has great cameo's, great villains and a story arc that spans the entire season. Very entertaining.

$14.97 for 6 episodes?And they weren't even fully animated.Come on.

"this came out on BET like a year ago."

No, it was produced for BET, but only aired in Australia early this year.It never aired on American TV.

I was all excited until I realized this was the "motion comic" series, not to be confused with what I consider an animated series. Partial-animated series would be more accurate. Meh. No love for the motion comics.

Cheers deadpool! I plan on giving this a miss though, because I read the six issue arc it's based on. Despite some great art by JRJr, Hudlin's writing was appalling IMO and the story was just crap. I'm not a fan of any of his Marvel work, Black Panther in particular. Plus, I'm just not that keen on motion comics... :)

@ TusconRican I was there @ the panel to. Dam its side it never came on BET. They are dragging their feet. They suppose to have a lot of animation lined up to even Star Van Diesel.

This not an motion comic. Its a full length animation series.

BP could rock! Is this animated or live action? I guess the casting of Djimon suggests he'll be seen.Although he also has a great voice for it.Either way a great piece of casting! Can't believe some people wanted Snipes!?!?!?!?????

I don't know why they chose to go with that style animation. At least we have the Black Panther on the new Avengers cartoon and he kicks butt.

@hewilldefytheirgravity I thought the same thing at first but you come to love it after a while.

This show was supposed to be on BET and they pulled the plug on it, yet another reason why BET is evil.

I never saw the series. I'm surprised it never got more publicity from CBM sites like this one. The intro looked really cool though! And the series has Storm in it!!

Yeah I didn't remember it being full stop motion. It's a mix. Not like the Watchmen motion comic.

What DID happen to that Vin Diesel Hannibal adaptation?
