BLACK PANTHER: Astral Projection And The Necropolis Strengthen Fan Theory About The Last Infinity Stone
Executive producer Nate Moore and production designer Hannah Beachler on Wakanda's City of the Dead and Black Panther's "astral projection." Is this a big clue why Thanos attacks in Infinity War?
In talking to io9 about the many different sets and locations used to create Wakanda, Black Panther executive producer Nate Moore and production designer Hannah Beachler had two very different thoughts about the importance of the Necropolis, Wakanda's City of the Dead.
Moore tried to downplay the significance of the final resting place of Wakanda royalty and Black Panthers when describing the Necropolis. "In the architecture and some of the dressing you’ll get an idea of Panthers throughout the centuries. I think we’ll see a little bit of it but I don’t know that it’ll be a big part of the film."
Beachler, on the other hand, gave a description that sounded as if the royal tomb would be a very important and pivotal backdrop. "You see a lot of masks, all the panther masks, and you see how they do a lot of their rituals... and it will be fabulous and wonderful. And then also the dream states that he goes into when he meets the ancestors."
io9 went on to report that they saw concept art for what appeared to be an astral projection scene that flashbacked to T'Challa's childhood.
In comic book lore, the Necropolis is a tomb for past Black Panthers and a spiritual focal point that allows T'Challa to communicate with their spirits when he needs guidance and advice. Will the Black Panther film explain the mystical significance of the location by relieving that it's actually the resting place for the Soul Stone?
There are a ton of fan theories floating around the internet that all make the same argument and cite Thanos' attack in the first Avengers: Infinity War trailer as support for their argument.
Black Panther hits theaters on February 16, 2018, in North America.
