Marvel's EYES OF WAKANDA Animated Series From Ryan Coogler Will Be "Sacred Timeline" Canon To The MCU

In an interview with Men's Health Magazine, Brad Winderbaum, a high-level executive at Marvel Studios, discussed the upcoming animated series Eyes of Wakanda and Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man. The conversation was intended to promote the recently released X-Men '97, (which has debuted as the highest-rated Marvel project of all-time)  but the discussion interestingly pivoted to the overarching plan for Marvel Animation.

Winderbaum disclosed that the MCU will accept Ryan Coogler's Eyes of Wakanda as canon to the MCU. And to be specific, it will be canon to the sacred timeline.

You can check out Winderbaum's full tease for Marvel's exciting plans for its animation division, below.

We're exploring so many amazing avenues on the animated side. Eyes of Wakanda, more than any other show, fits right into our sacred MCU timeline continuity. [Black Panther director Ryan Coogler] is a producer on it, Todd Harris is one of our long-time storyboard artists who directs it. It's about Wakandan history and mythology, and it's really cool. It looks amazing. And it feels like, 'Okay I'm getting an animated look into the MCU.'

There's also a third season of What If...? with Bryan Andrews leading the charge, whose been there from the beginning. And without spoiling anything, that's where we start to feel crossover potential with animated projects. We've got Marvel Zombies coming down the road. And Jeff Trammell's Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man, which I'm going into a sound mix for in a couple of hours. It's so great. He and his team over there, they know how to make you invest in characters. It's a very high school, ensemble-driven show with Peter Parker at the center. It's just so much fun.

It's encouraging to see Marvel resuming its 'more mature' animation efforts after a long hiatus from the days when the company regularly produced more sophisticated direct-to-video animated films and programs.

In the early 2000s, Marvel had a string of well-received DTV animated films such as Ultimate Avengers, Next Avengers: Heroes of Tomorrow and Hulk vs. These animated features led into the excellent The Avengers: Earth's Mightiest Heroes animated series which aired on Disney XD.

However, there was a notable drop in quality and adult-oriented animated projects from Marvel, entering into the next decade. Based on Winderbaum's above comments, it seems the success of What If...? has Marvel ready to ramp up its animation side.

Are you looking forward to Eyes of Wakanda and Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man? There's also the forthcoming Marvel Zombies animated series that Winderbaum teased. Let us know the project you're most excited for in the comment section below.

Eyes of Wakanda Official Synopsis: Throughout Wakandan history, brave warriors have been tasked to travel the world retrieving dangerous vibranium artifacts. This is their story.

Could never get tired of going to Wakanda. With the strong start of X-men 97, this is probably going to be a big surprise.

Cool!!.

Going by the premise , I wouldn’t be surprised if we see Wakanda & MCU history & mythology through the eyes of the War Dogs.

Also, I’m intrigued by Friendly Neighborhood Spider Man aswell and how Norman Osborn will factor into it (and if there’s any wider MCU ramifications to him being in the show).

@TheVisionary25 - Norman Osborn's hair actually makes sense now.

I think they've come to the realisation that Black Panther without Black Panther is not Black Panther.

@HashTagSwagg - Wakanda forever was better then the original film. The black panther mantle is not dependant on sex differentiation. The legacy of black panther means so much more then that which is why the story of Shuri taking on the role of the panther was far more compelling then killmonger or T’challa’s story.

@TheMetaMan - I go back and forth on which I prefer, but they both compliment each other so well. All things considered, that was the best version of a sequel to the first they could have made, and far better than it had any right to be.

@TheMetaMan - Nah I disagree - the second film was way worse than the first and that was just average

BULLSH!T!!

Does this mean people who don't watch animated superhero shows (Most of the general moviegoing public) have to watch this to know what's going on in the MCU?

Frack these idiots at Disney.

WruceBayne - 3/21/2024, 10:31 PM
@DocSpock - no, that’s not what that means. It means that the individuals who watched this show will get a small little bonus if anything from the show is referenced in the wider MCU.

@WruceBayne -

"Ryan Coogler's Eyes of Wakanda is canon to the MCU."

That's what it sounds like.

@DocSpock - it’s canon but you don’t have to follow every single thread to understand the next step. If you didn’t watch Iron Man 2 or Thor: The Dark World, you still understood Avengers: Endgame.

Since the first season of "What If" I haven't bothered with Marvel Animation until X-Men 97 and even that doesn't look like it hold my attention for that long. I don't see myself watching any of these

📴 T: in other animation news, it seems like family guy got their ⚽ 🏀 back since the move to Wednesday. I'm getting season 1-3 vibes...

On topic: I'll check out these MCU animated shows at season end. I'm still a binge watcher.

@KennKathleen - the first thing I think of when I read family guy is Seth MacFarlane, but that's probably not what you mean. Although I guess he's back too with Ted
KennKathleen
KennKathleen - 3/22/2024, 2:00 PM
@bkmeijer1 - I do feel like Fox muzzled him and Disney neutered him. That 1st season gave zero f@$ks, but it got diluted over the years
bkmeijer1
bkmeijer1 - 3/22/2024, 3:57 PM
@KennKathleen - so you did mean Family Guy? Kinda thought you meant a family guy in general. Guess the lack of captial letter threw me off.

Haven't seen it in a long time to be honest. Think it kinda ran it's course already way back when. Good to see it return

@bkmeijer1 - I did mean the show. Damn the edit lack!
bkmeijer1
bkmeijer1 - 3/22/2024, 6:58 PM
@KennKathleen - I do miss the edit button, but I think it's being worked on.

Anyway, have you also seen Ted by any chance? Think it's together with The Orville MacFarlane's better work imo. Pretty enjoyable stuff. Have to catch up on The Orville though

KennKathleen - 3/23/2024, 1:36 AM
@bkmeijer1 - I did check out Ted. I enjoyed the first film. Still, Family Guy s1-5 was my most watched television. American Dad was also a gem for a long time.
bkmeijer1
bkmeijer1 - 3/23/2024, 4:23 AM
@KennKathleen - yeah, American Dad was fun too. Never got into the Cleveland Show though. That was a bit too much of the same.

I did mean Ted the show though. Premiered earlier this year. Far better than the movies imo. It's classic MacFarlane again too imo.
KennKathleen
KennKathleen - 3/23/2024, 9:45 AM
@bkmeijer1 - ah, maybe I'll check it out!

So it's gonna be the first Marvel Animation show that is canon to the Sacred Timeline? About time Animation gets to be part of the big thing.

I don't see this be released soon though. I'm thinking late next year, considering Zombies and Your Friendly Neighbourhood Spider-Man will probably be released first.

Where did you get that thumbnail from? That suit looks like a mix between Civil War and 2018 BP suit
