LeBron James just scored a slam dunk at the box office after Space Jam: A New Legacy shot straight to the North American box office this weekend. It easily topped Black Widow with an impressive debut of $32 million following a $13.2 million opening day on Friday.

The Marvel Studios movie, on the other hand, dropped a massive 80% from Friday to Friday with an $8 million haul for a projected second weekend of $26 million - $27 million (a 67% drop).

That's by no means a bad result, but it is a big fall from last week, and a result, perhaps, of people being able to watch the movie at home on Disney+'s Premier Access. Black Widow broke records last weekend (in the pandemic era), and it seems Space Jam: A New Legacy's negative reviews have done nothing to stop families from taking their kids to see the sequel to the animated classic.

Of course, the movie is also available is HBO Max (for free), making these numbers even more impressive in some respects. Now, all eyes will be on The Suicide Squad in a few weeks.

There are concerns about the Delta variant of COVID-19, but it's unclear whether that's had any sort of impact on the box office this weekend. Moviegoers have certainly embraced the opportunity to return to the theatrical experience, and that's hopefully going to continue as we head into the winter.

@dracula - Yeah, well after what the MCU did with Taskmaster, I don't feel that BW deserves any tickets from me. I'll just wait till there's free streaming for it somewhere.

@MosquitoFarmer - I "thought" he looked familiar, but it's been years since I've seen it. It was a rental, with a date, and I don't remember much of it.

She had a bowling ball, someone could do something with forks (or some kitchen utensils), and I can't remember the rest.

But I "did" remember enjoying it.

Thanks.

@Starscream24 - what they did to Taskmaster was kinda bad, but for me it was stuff like taking development time away from telling a Natasha focused story that flashed out her origins, hiw she was caught and trained and her first real missions as an adult, and her time in pudapest, really show the Drekovs daughter relationship and the weight if that decision yo kill her to get him, show her friendship with Clint begin and their connection, even some winter soldier espionage stuff, anything more to develop her rather than focusing on her "family" and this goofy dynamic that pilots the whole film. When you stand this shoulder to shoulder with The Winter Soldier, this movie is goofy. And if any movie in the MCU should have been a serious espionage film, it was Natasha's solo story. This could have been the female led Mission Impossible or Bourne or James Bond level MCU outing with some thrilling stuff. What we got was safe goofy typical MCU crap, which is more of a disservice than butchering Taskmaster ever could be.

@Starscream24 - also, how does Joss handle the topic of the Widows being sterilized with more seriousness than the actual Black Widow solo movie? They played it as a [frick]ing gag joke in the plane and lingered on that gag for like a solid minute and a half. Super tone deaf, and not even something to joke about.

Joss may have written Widow to say she feels like a monster now which was pretty questionable, but at least it was played seriously in AoU. How they joked about it in Widow was gross.

Watched it at home last night. A New Legacy is basically an HBO Max commercial. Kids will eat it up though. The first 15 is the best part. After that, it gets rough. All the DC stuff in it is really cool and well done though.

The reactions to Black Widow seem kinda mixed, but to my surprise, I really, really liked and think it's one of my favorite MCU entries atm.

@Unites - It seems the vast majority really liked it. Lots of great actions scenes and beautiful women. Plus, for those who wanted to see her in her own film, finally got to and appreciate it.

Plus some other things.

Almost all reviews are mixed. It's just that the mix is sometimes very lopsided.

So, there's that.
