Unfortunately, there's now no way Black Widow is coming to Disney+ this year, and while it could happen early next year depending what happens with a COVID vaccine and theater closures, we're not banking on it. May isn't that far away, though, and we now have some interesting new comments on what to expect from the movie's villainous Red Room Black Widows.
Talking in the Black Widow: The Official Movie Special Book (which is now on sale from Titan Books), Fight Coordinator James Young was asked about the role the Widows play in the Marvel Studios blockbuster and how they relate to Ray Winstone's villainous Dreykov.
"The Widows are basically from the Red Room. From a young age these ladies are put there and they are trained to be assassins," Young explains. "What Dreykov has done is he's learned that in order to control the world, you don't want to be stepping forward and showing your face. So Dreykov uses his Widows to do his bidding. He uses these young ladies that are assassins to the core."
"All they know is violence. It's tough for Natasha when we get to that fight in the movie. Again, we get to the whole, "I've been through this. I know what you're about." Well, that puts Natasha on a really difficult step for that fight with the Widows because these Widows want to kill her. No one leaves this room until she's dead. That puts Natasha in an extremely hard spot, but these Widows have one goal. Whatever the boss says, they are going to accomplish it," he continues.
"I think it's pretty cool now that we're getting to see what the fans have been asking for. In this movie, we get to see the Red Room and discover what these Widows are, that there are multiple Widows, that Natasha was the best of them, and that Dreykov has always wanted her back."
There have already been rumblings that Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings' rumoured underground fight tournament will include a Black Widow, so Marvel Studios can definitely do something interesting with these Red Room recruits in Black Widow and beyond.
Black Widow is currently set to be released in theaters on May 7th, 2021.
