It's been a long wait for Scarlett Johansson's solo Black Widow film, which was originally slated to be released back on May 1st of 2020 until theaters were forced to close their doors amid the COVID-19 pandemic. Not only is it Natasha Romanoff's solo debut, the upcoming Black Widow film is the first movie in Phase Four of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Thankfully, things are looking up as theaters begin to reopen, and the movie is set for release next month (July 9th).

IMAX announced today that those who see Black Widow on IMAX screens will be treated to 22 minutes of select scenes in the exclusive expanded aspect ratio! The massive IMAX screen at 1.90:1 aspect ratio will show up to 26% more of the image. This expanded aspect ratio also allows for a more immersive experience because it fills more of the viewer's peripheral vision.

IMAX was kind enough to provide an image displaying exactly how much more movie-goers can look forward to!

Black Widow IMAX

In Marvel Studios’ action-packed spy thriller “Black Widow,” Natasha Romanoff aka Black Widow confronts the darker parts of her ledger when a dangerous conspiracy with ties to her past arises. Pursued by a force that will stop at nothing to bring her down, Natasha must deal with her history as a spy and the broken relationships left in her wake long before she became an Avenger. Joining Johansson in the new feature film are Florence Pugh as Yelena, David Harbour as Alexei/The Red Guardian, and Rachel Weisz as Melina. “Black Widow”—the first film in Phase Four of the Marvel Cinematic Universe—is directed by Cate Shortland and produced by Kevin Feige.

IMAX is a rip off racket that doesn't justify the price tag, especially for just 22 minutes here.

Queue the comments where someone tries to state that one format is better or worse than all the others without respect to how the filmmaker intended the film to be seen.

@HAILHYDRA - but if it releases in two different formats, which is the intended one?

@bkmeijer - that’s a hard question to answer with absolutely certainty unless the filmmaker outright says it. One way to get idea is that if the format in standard cinemas is 1.9:1 instead of 2.4:1 the filmmaker obviously chose that for the extra verticality and one could assume that they would want you to see as much of the original image as possible. In this case, if there are only 22 mins of IMAX format, it would suggest to me that the studio mandated some sort of partial conversion in order justify an IMAX release. Beyond that, I think it comes down to personal choice and movie-going preferences. It just annoys me when someone tries to say that one format is definitively better than the other.

@HAILHYDRA - yeah it does very much depend on the circumstances. With Black Widow I'm assuming it's gonna be the major action scenes, so I do hope I get to see that intented look at home too (although IMAX format is still rarely released at home)

Are they also finally releasing it with that format on home release? The wide-screen works best on the big screen, but at home I unfortunately don't have one so I'm stuck with massive black bars on my screen (yeah I'm one of those who's annoyed by that)

Using the above example, I can guarantee that I will NOT miss anything the NON-IMAX cuts off. The action goes by to fast for me to take in all the little extra details the above example is showing us. And this takes me focus off of the main action (center of the screen-usually).
