In Avengers: Endgame, Natasha Romanoff made the ultimate sacrifice on Vormir when she leapt to her death so that Hawkeye could return to the present day with the Soul Stone. It was a heartbreaking, yet surprisingly fitting conclusion to the character's story arc in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, but Scarlett Johansson's stint isn't over just yet.
During a recent interview with Total Film (via The Direct), the actress talked about Black Widow, expressing her hopes that the solo adventure will serve as a satisfying resolution for fans.
"Our goal was for [fans] to feel satisfied with this story," Johansson said. "That they could maybe have some resolution, I think, with this character's death, in a way. It felt like people wanted that."
We felt pretty satisfied after Avengers: Endgame, and many fans still question why we need to find out what Natasha was up to between the events of Captain America: Civil War and Avengers: Infinity War. However, it will be interesting if Black Widow finally revisits key moments in her past (Budapest) and lays the groundwork for Yelena Belova to become a major player in the MCU.
How essential Black Widow proves to be to the wider MCU remains to be seen, but we're definitely excited to return to theaters for that big screen experience with the first Phase 4 adventure.
Black Widow is set to be released in theaters and on Disney+ on July 9, 2021.
