Scarlett Johansson has played a huge role in the Marvel Cinematic Universe as Black Widow, making her debut in 2010's Iron Man 2 and recently showing up in Avengers: Infinity War. She'll return as the fan-favourite former S.H.I.E.L.D. agent next year in Avengers 4 but a solo movie is currently in the works and now another filmmaker has been named as being in the running to take the helm.

According to Deadline, Marvel Studios is definitely looking for a female director to take charge of Black Widow and they name Cate Shortland as someone on the short list we should be keeping an eye on.

The Australian director has a lot of credits to her name with Lore and Berlin Syndrome among the latest. Black Widow would be her first Hollywood blockbuster but Kevin Feige has never shied away from hiring Indie filmmakers for its superhero movies and it's something which has paid off for them in a big way on multiple occasions. @L0RDbuckethead - I disagree. We don't need the same female director directing every female film, give somebody else a chance.

But for reals, I wouldn't mind them, I actually really liked the 1st season of Sense8 on Netflix.

The Russos are the IDEAL choice in my opinion but I would go with Bigelow or Amma Asante if a woman is required.

Hope we get a blend of Waid's run and Edmondson's too.

I'd love to see Lesli Linka Glatter get the job. I don't know if she has any interest in CBMs (she worked on the TWD for years), but her work on Homeland should prove more than enough to helm a Black Widow film.

She did great work on Homeland with Claire Danes' character.

This idea that only women can direct female comic book films and that only men can direct male comic book films has to stop. If I were a directer I'd love to make a Batgirl film. I'm not sure why identity should come into it. They should give more male CMBs to female directors and vice versa.

@Nightwing1015 - Same logic as I'm a white man, I can only relate to white and male characters.
