Disney Responds To Scarlett Johansson's BLACK WIDOW Lawsuit; Calls It "Sad And Distressing"

The Walt Disney Co. has now issued an official response to Black Widow star Scarlett Johansson suing them for breach of contract earlier today, calling the lawsuit "sad and distressing."

Earlier today, we reported that Black Widow star Scarlett Johansson had filed a lawsuit against the Walt Disney Co., alleging that her contract was breached when the Marvel Studios movie was released on Disney+ and in theaters simultaneously.

The actress claims that Disney was well aware that making the movie available to stream at the same time it hit the big screen would dissuade theatre attendance, but "did so anyway, knowingly and intentionally." We didn't expect Disney to address this head-on (not publicly, at least), but the House of Mouse has come out fighting.

A Disney spokesperson (via THR) issued the following statement.

“There is no merit whatsoever to this filing. The lawsuit is especially sad and distressing in its callous disregard for the horrific and prolonged global effects of the COVID-19 pandemic. Disney has fully complied with Ms. Johansson’s contract and furthermore, the release of Black Widow on Disney+ with Premier Access has significantly enhanced her ability to earn additional compensation on top of the $20M she has received to date.”

That's... quite a response. Disney clearly has no intention of backing down and attempting to settle, so we could be looking at a lengthy court battle here.

@tmp3 - depends, she could've been compensated correctly, as they claim. either way, they are correct with how tone def it is. she made 20 million, plus possible additional compensation, as is explicitly claimed. their statement is pretty air tight, no beating around any bushes. we shall see.

@Termin8er - Presumably she doesn't get any of the streaming money. But why not work all that out with the studio, before the movie was even released?😂

@tmp3 - Still called her a Queen though. She’s far more than suss. Immoral some might say. Hypocritical too. Suing them for not upholding their side of the contract when they have public behaviour clauses in their contracts and they’ve clearly ignored all her “suss” moments. She owes them. And they could easily sue her for far more than she’s suing them for.

@McMurdo - Ahh, politics. How quaint. Created by people with power to gain more power, wealth and greed. A mirage designed to make you believe that what they want is what is best for you, only it’s always what’s best for them. Yet they leave people like you to squabble and murder in their name. Brainwashed to fight what you don’t even understand. A lamb for slaughter. Your whole life surrounded by a veil of deceit that you cannot see. Farmed to uphold what they put there to hold you back. These names, these people you mock in the name of politics to show your blind support for another. It’s all a joke to them. They don’t care about you. None of them do. Even if you’d lay your life on the line for them, they’re only glad that you’re there beneath their feet in your “rightful” place. Allow them to think for you.
