BLUE BEETLE Director Angel Manuel Soto Likes Tweets Critical Of WB As Fans Campaign To #SaveBlueBeetle

With Batgirl scrapped by Warner Bros. in the midst of post-production, there's a lot of concern for future DC movies. Now, some recent Twitter activity from <>Blue Beetle's director has everyone talking...

With Warner Bros. Discovery looking to shift focus away from making movies for HBO Max, there's a lot of uncertainty surrounding the streaming service's future. Already, a number of original titles have mysteriously vanished from the platform, and you'll be all too aware of Batgirl's recent cancellation by now.

Deemed too expensive to warrant a streaming release (where it would be unlikely to gain the number of subscribers needed to recoup the studio's losses) and not cinematic enough for theaters, Batgirl will never see the light of day.

Where does that leave Blue Beetle? The movie was being eyed for HBO Max before suddenly pivoting to a theatrical release, and based on what we've seen in set photos, it's no more or less cinematic than Batgirl. Also, the cast doesn't boast names anywhere near as big as Michael Keaton, J.K. Simmons, and Brendan Fraser outside of perhaps Susan Sarandon.

While it was recently reported that future DC movies are safe from the axe, Blue Beetle director Angel Manuel Soto has gone on a Twitter liking spree. The filmmaker has "Liked" Tweets from fans pleading with Warner Bros. to not scrap his movie and even some that are critical of the studio.

None of this necessarily means that Blue Beetle is at risk, though it does suggest Soto has some concerns for his movie ahead of its planned release on August 18, 2023. It would be a terrible shame for Jaime Reyes' big screen debut to be next on the chopping block, especially with such a diverse cast, but what makes it any different to Batgirl? That remains to be seen.

Here is a sampling of Soto's "Liked" Tweets, including one that translates to read, "HBO Max is (still is) one of the best streaming services, if not the best right now. Its new owners are morons."

No one tell David Zaslav he said that, okay?

@UnderBelly - I feel bad for a lot of the folks over at DC right now. It's gotta suck not knowing if your project is going to see the light of day. It's one thing if you're an actor or crew member and worried, but if even the director isn't sure if the movie is going to get released? That's scary. You'd think the producers and directors would have been told something by now.

@thewanderer - Not even just DC, but WB as a whole…They’ve already started pulling movies off of HBO Max that we’re exclusive to the service…Like fully complete movies that have been available to watch for a while now…Rumor has it that they’ll start cutting the series next (Titans, Doom Patrol, Harley etc…)…

Having an announcement today but most expect there to be a layoff of 70% of the workers related to HBO Max…The DC stuff is really just the tip of the iceberg here…

@vegetaray - yikes, that's definitely scary and speaks to the shape WB is in if they think all of that is necessary. Cancelling Titans would be a shame, it's been really good lately.

@vegetaray - I don't understand the removal of the original movies though? Like are they selling them on to other streamers? Or just removing them totally, because surely removing content that's already out there is only going to kill the on demand services... unless the plan is kill HBOMax entirely.

@UnderBelly - At least 6 movies so far have been pulled…Just gone now…That Pickle movie with Seth Rogan and that witch movie with Ann Hathaway for example…Just straight up gone…So it’s not like it’s new content because most of the stuff they’ve pulled so far has been in there for years…And it’s not like this content is available anywhere else to stream…Almost like they have a straight up vendetta against WB…So strange…

My bet is that they’ll kill the HBO Max app outright and reduce the content to an “HBO” tab in the Discovery+ app…

It's DC's version of the snap, except it impacts movies they were going to produce. Blue Beetle sadly being the most tragic death of all if it does not manage to pull through

@bobevanz - He's killed all scripted shows on TBS and TNT and now HBO Max is next. HBO Max was actually growing and now Asslav is gonna kill it by making it a tab on his baby, Discovery+.
I thought DC landed a Bob Chapek, but it's turning out Zaslav is another Ike Perlmutter. I'm just waiting for a photo of him with Trump (he's a supporter) to surface.

I will say this. Battlebots is far and away more entertaining than a lot of the dreck that WB has foisted upon audiences in the last 10 years.

I am all for Blue Beetle being released on whatever the streaming service will be called. But do not make it part of a shared CBM universe.

I have to wonder if the backlash was worth it? You release a bad film sure it underperforms so you take criticism and move on. Axing multiple nearly completed films sets a new precedent we didn't know could exist for these big blockbusters. Imagine Marvel Axing AntMan 3 ? I would have loved to see Jk Simmons and Michael Keaton back. Maybe we'll get a Batman Beyond film.

@WowMuchComicBoo - Okay help me out here. Batgirl is a new movie property, with cosplay-looking costumes, and terrible advance screening reports.

Ant-Man 3 is the third of a highly regarded, family-friendly and profitable series, with an experienced director, that is also part of the highest-earning franchise in film history.

What's the comparison?

Don't you take this away from us. The character has a popular following, especially after Young Justice and the movie seems to actually have a proper comic book accurate tone with out coming off as silly. They have the perfect actor casted for the role and it seems this not visibly tied to any other project, so it can be part of whatever continuity they wanna move forward with.
This movie is a change to build something new for DC films. Bring on new faces and work on aspects of comics that usually get over looked in these films, like the younger generation heroes, Teen Titans etc.

How can you compare beetles and batgirls cinematography by comparing their set photos? Like, how dense are you, really?

This is honestly EXACTLY the kinda ballsy move that many were asking for, so ya know...

Be careful what you wish for.

The thing is...i WANT to see the glass half-full, but the reality is that we have NO guarantee that things will take a turn for the better with...whatever plans (do they even have plans?) they intend to implement from now on...

Scraping what the old regime greenlit is one thing...

@Doomsday8888 - I'm a glass half-full type of person too, but WB is just throwing my whole glass on the ground now.

Anyway, it is sorta what I asked for. But not completely. I hoped that they would just release Aquaman, Flash, Blue Beetle and Batgirl next year in theatres, and just start fresh from 2024 onwards with The Batman 2 and movies set in that universe.

Orphix - 8/4/2022, 7:14 AM
@Doomsday8888 - No film comes with a guarantee though.

Maybe the upper management team have had enough of sticking plasters on the DC franchise. When a new team of producers come in it is very common for them to sideline/bury anything that was in production before their arrival (not many producers want someone else film performing better than theirs). Admittedly never on this scale before - but then the value of this franchise is so huge the casualties are going to be big too.

Battabing - 8/4/2022, 8:59 AM

Kinda sad the director has to do that, now that he's not sure about his job anymore.

If they scrap it, I hope the cast and crew get some sort of heads-up unlike with Batgirl. El Arbi probably hoped for a better wedding gift from his boss.

We need as many non Batman DC properties coming out as possible. Gotta convince them that not everything has to be connected to him
UnderBelly
UnderBelly - 8/4/2022, 7:13 AM
@Twenty23Three - I don't think it's about them not connecting. I'm pretty sure we're still getting The Batman 2 and Joker 2 for example. I think they just want them in theatres and Batman didn't have that going for it..apparantly. At least that's how I'm reading it and the business behind it with writing off the taxes.
Twenty23Three
Twenty23Three - 8/4/2022, 7:14 AM
@UnderBelly - oh sorry I was meaning them having faith in characters to stand on their own without somehow connected them to the cash cow that is Batman
