Another clip from Blue Beetle has been released (via IGN), and it finds Jaime Reyes attempting to get used to sharing his body with an extraterrestrial "passenger."

After previously being freaked out by the Scarab's presence, this latest sneak peek sees Jaime begin to have some fun with his new abilities. When he has trouble summoning the armor, Reyes decides to take a (literal) leap of faith by jumping off a building in the hope that the Scarab will activate and save his life.

DC Studios co-CEO James Gunn has confirmed that Reyes is the "first DCU character," which would obviously suggest that Blue Beetle factors into his plan for the budding shared universe. However, in a recent interview with Fandango, star Xolo Maridueña indicated that nothing was certain, and his return will depend on this movie's success.

"I have had the pleasure of getting to speak with Mr. James Gunn and the whole DC fam. And, you know, at the end of the day, I think, first, we have to cross this first hill, right? And introduce Jaime to the world. But I think it's up to the audience to watch the movie. It's up to everyone to show up for the movie and it's so wonderful that we get to make movies like this."

Check out the clip below, along with a featurette spotlighting interviews with the cast and some new footage.

"Recent college grad Jaime Reyes (Xolo Mariduena) returns home full of aspirations for his future, only to find that home is not quite as he left it," reads the synopsis. "As he searches to find his purpose in the world, fate intervenes when Jaime unexpectedly finds himself in possession of an ancient relic of alien biotechnology: the Scarab."

"When the Scarab suddenly chooses Jaime to be its symbiotic host, he is bestowed with an incredible suit of armour capable of extraordinary and unpredictable powers, forever changing his destiny as he becomes the Super Hero Blue Beetle."

The cast also includes Bruna Marquezine, Belissa Escobedo, Adriana Barraza, Elpidia Carrillo, Damián Alcázar, and Raoul Max Trujillo.

Blue Beetle is set to be released in theaters on August 18, 2023.

I know this was filmed to go straight to streaming and is lower budgeted, but why does it looks SO damn cheap?
In fact, why does almost everything coming out lately FX-wise look so cheap, even when they're spending $300 million plus?
Is it corner-cutting, money laundering, money laundering, or money laundering?

There's no way these movies are actually costing what they're reporting they are.

Blue Beetle will be the SIXTH straight boxoffice flop for DC/WB. Sheesh.

@Feralwookiee - I think the costume looks great but yeah the movie doesn't look great.

I will watch it when it eventually comes to streaming.

@Feralwookiee - I’m pretty sure this one was much cheaper than that. Remember it was originally made to be a HBO Max release.

But yeah, the theatrical ones coming out that have these huge budgets sure don’t look to be worth the money. Crazy how the LOTR trilogy from 20 years ago holds up better than most modern big budget movies.

@Feralwookiee - Can you elaborate on what parts of what we're seeing looks cheap? The sets look cheap? The Blue Beetle costume or the powers? Because the former is practical and the rest is pure CGI with nanotechnology. The flying scenes look cheap? Is it the fighting sequences? They look ranging from decent to good like when Jaime takes out those soldiers in front of his house as the camera follows his movements. Or is it the "cinematography" that you find cheap?

Every time someone claims this they never present an actual argument of what exactly looks "low-budget". And if BB bombs it will be all thanks to the idiot that is running WBD because for some unknown reason he thought a film that had more VFX in it already had finished it's post-production process was ready for the big screen unlike Batgirl in order to "protect the brand" for wasting the marketing and budget on the wrong DC movie and on Barbie. Not because the people that worked on this film did a bad thing.

The strike also counts in whether this bombs or not, the cast can't do press junket nor anything to promote their project because they would be breaking the rules. And they're in this mess because WBD's boss, Zaslav, refuses to pay everyone what is right.

@NinnesMBC - The sets, lighting, cinematography, and cgi all look cheap to me. It looks like a it was filmed as a TV sitcom.

This is somewhat understandable because BB was shot to go straight to streaming and was not supposed to be theatrically released.
Stiil, it looks like yet another dully filmed cheap movie that does nothing to stand out from the crowd imo.

This was gonna flop with or without any strike either way. WB/DC has been on an incredible losing streak and introducing a barely known character in the middle of that streak when the brand's reputation is already tanking was a bad idea.

@Feralwookiee - What sets in particular? Kord Tech building looks cheap? The little of what we've seen of the lab that belonged to Ted Kord? Jaime's hum ble house looks also cheap? Elaborate, you were as vague as before on this. TV sitcom? Getting the feeling you're bordering on trolling with that one.

Just because something isn't meant to go for a theatrical release doesn't mean it's literally cheap in every aspect of it's production.

The strike still plays a role though as many other projects with more recognizeable actors are also facing an uphill battle to generate buzz for their upcoming releases. Look at Neill Blomkamp's Gran Turismo film starring David Harbour and Luke Evans, the cast can't promote it and it's why it had to be delayed a few weeks due to the strike, doing so-so in reviews so far and the box office could go either way. The final Equalizer film with Denzel Washington is coming out next month and there hasn't been any promotion since April when the 1st trailer dropped. Blue Beetle's been around since 2005 and has appeared in multiple adaptations since Smallville to Batman: Brave and the Bold and Young Justice as well. It all comes down to how one handles marketing and WBD has had an awful marketing strategy.
