The DCEU's time is nearing its end and despite James Gunn saying The Flash would reset the franchise, he recently confirmed the DCU won't truly be introduced until 2025's Superman: Legacy

The whole thing feels a little muddled if we're being honest, and the fact Blue Beetle is a DCEU movie featuring a hero who is confirmed to be part of the DCU has done little to clear things up. Now, lead star Xolo Maridueña has shared Gunn's reaction to a movie which was once set to be released exclusively on Max.

"I just remember James Gunn has this really excited energy to him all the time," the actor tells Total Film"But them coming into this position of the movie already being made, and then being like, 'All right [mimes rifling through a filing cabinet as if rummaging through the movie], let's see what we have here' – it was very rewarding for them to actually respond well to it and enjoy it."

"They had their notes here and there story-wise, but I think, in capturing the essence of Jaime and the Reyes family, [they] think we did a really great job."

Some new promo art for Blue Beetle has also been released which showcases the title character's battle with the movie's formidable big bad, Carapax.

In Blue Beetle, recent college grad Jaime Reyes returns home full of aspirations for his future, only to find that home is not quite as he left it. As he searches to find his purpose in the world, fate intervenes when Jaime unexpectedly finds himself in possession of an ancient relic of alien biotechnology: the Scarab.

When the Scarab suddenly chooses Jaime to be its symbiotic host, he is bestowed with an incredible suit of armor capable of extraordinary and unpredictable powers, forever changing his destiny as he becomes the superhero known as Blue Beetle.

The movie stars Xolo Maridueña, Adriana Barraza, Damían Alcázar, Elpidia Carrillo, Bruna Marquezine, Raoul Max Trujillo, Belissa Escobedo, Harvey Guillén, with Susan Sarandon, and George Lopez. Angel Manuel Soto directs from a screenplay by Gareth Dunnet-Alcocer.

Blue Beetle arrives in theaters on August 18.

Gunn confirmed that Xolo would be in the DCU as Blue Beetle, so even if the movie isn't great, or bombs (which it like 95% more than likely will, I think I saw an opening projection of like 15 million) I'm glad Xolo did a good job to get the opportunity to get his break

@AllsGood - This summer is cruel for big budgets, Flash, Indiana Jones, Elemental, all getting slammed horribly. Hell, Mission Impossible should make a lot more due to legs...but it loses its IMAX screens to Oppenheimer next week and is competeing with Barbie. Mission Impossible, barring some unforeseen circumstance, will fall to 3rd

@AllsGood - McMurdo

DoubleD it's simply a james bond film. It's not even close to on par with 4, 5, or 6 and it's not better than Abrams Mi3 either. It's action porn with a really paper thin plot.

I totally thought Gunn's reaction was that this is "the best superhero movie ever... after "The Flash" of course".

Just cant get it up for this movie. I guess I would go if someone asks me to, but otherwise I don't see myself making a point of it. It doesnt even look bad to me, it just doesnt look that interesting.

The same James Gunn that said the flash was one of the best comic book movies ever made?

@smudgewhat2 - it’s garbage. Miller sucks and is annoying as [frick] in. Kenton was the only reason worth watching. 260 million world wide 🤣🤣🤣.

This looks like genetic shit but if I was Latino I could see being excited by all Latino cast. Seeing oneself onscreen is pretty important though one would always hope the movie would actually be smart and / or original as “The Flash” is, you biased bRain washed Fluckers.

Same thing with Black Panther. A very good movie but not great. But it spoke to a need for mostly black people
To see themselves. Their possibilities. It’s human and universal actually.

@smudgewhat2 - generic not genetic. Ironic though.

Gunn says a lot of things these days.

But I'm still looking forward to seeing this.
