BLUE BEETLE Star Xolo Maridueña Confirms DCU Return: "I Can Confidently Say That We Will See Him Soon"

Despite his solo movie's disappointing box office run, Blue Beetle star Xolo Maridueña has confirmed that he will reprise the role of Jaime Reyes in the DCU at some point...

Prior to Blue Beetle's release, DC Studios co-CEO James Gunn referred to Jaime Reyes (Xolo Maridueña) as the "first DCU character," essentially confirming that the hero would make the jump to the revamped DC film and TV universe he was working on with Peter Safran.

This was before Blue Beetle went on to end its theatrical run as the lowest-grossing DCEU movie of all time, however.

Nobody would be too surprised if such a disappointing box office performance led to a course change, but Maridueña remains confident that he will still get the opportunity to don the Scarab armour again.

"I know we’ll see Blue Beetle again, whether it comes in the form of Blue Beetle 2 or wherever," said the Cobra Kai actor on the red carpet of the Saturn Awards. "It’s been really great to work alongside James [Gunn] and Peter [Safran], who have graciously folded us into their new universe even though it wasn’t part of what they came up with. It’s an honor. Now, where Blue Beetle heads in the future? I don’t know. But I can confidently say that we will see him soon."

A direct sequel seems highly unlikely, but Gunn and Safran are said to have numerous projects in development that they have yet to officially announce. Gunn recently shared an image of the Justice League International to Instagram, leading to speculation that Reyes might be enlisted to replace original Blue Beetle Ted Kord on the team down the line.

There are numerous other possibilities, of course, but most fans will likely be glad to hear that Maridueña will get the chance to return as Reyes. Whatever failings the movie may have had, the actor's performance received a lot of praise.

"Recent college grad Jaime Reyes (Xolo Mariduena) returns home full of aspirations for his future, only to find that home is not quite as he left it," reads the synopsis. "As he searches to find his purpose in the world, fate intervenes when Jaime unexpectedly finds himself in possession of an ancient relic of alien biotechnology: the Scarab."

"When the Scarab suddenly chooses Jaime to be its symbiotic host, he is bestowed with an incredible suit of armour capable of extraordinary and unpredictable powers, forever changing his destiny as he becomes the Super Hero Blue Beetle."

The cast also includes Bruna Marquezine, Belissa Escobedo, Adriana Barraza, Elpidia Carrillo, Damián Alcázar, and Raoul Max Trujillo.

Finally watch blue Beatle last weekend and it was ok. It wasn't bad it just used a shit ton of cliché's. Other than that I don't mind if they bring him back in the role

@HammerLegFoot - Probably would be more well received if it came out some years earlier. It's a pretty formulaic superhero movie that came out at a time where the fatigue has really set in with the genre. I enjoyed it though and the cast was great. Xolo is a great actor.

@HammerLegFoot -

It was better than I was expecting for sure. I think like Ms. Marvel it really nailed the family dynamic and the secondary characters in general really, the characters elevated the show more than the story did, for me anyway.

Didn't get a chance to watch this. But I loved blue beetle in that young justice cartoon. And I love this actor in Cobra Kai. So I'm happy with this casting and just the fact we have blue beetle in live action. About as mind blowing as having America Chavez in live action (altho the latter doesn't quite match the powers of her comic counterpart but I'm ok taking her on a magic route vs. Multiversal Rogie powerhouse )

If true then without a doubt Gunn is taking a lesson from marvel we didn't expect: excitement in losing money.

Blue Beetle was fun, and the ending (post credits?) scene sets up a sequel I was excited to see. Hope they make it.

I mean, his movie is a part of the DCU and so he is, so yeah, Gunn will have his ways to fit him into something.

@Spawnnn - The movie isn’t a part of the DCU. Only the actor will be brought back as the character. The first DCU movie will be Superman Legacy.

If Jamie comes back serving as the Morty to Booster's younger hotter Rick, I will be so damn happy. Imagine the time-jumping adventures they could have, meeting Jonah Hex, getting in the crosshairs of Adolf Hitler trying to steal the Spear of Destiny, the possibilities are endless.

Cavill and the Rock were also confident.
Gal Gadot was also confident.

Press X to doubt.

This should be interesting. Are his supporting characters returning? It will be odd to not have his family around but if they are, it will connect to the previous universe and essentially make the first film the first DCU movie.

He should get his own TV series to continue the story, develop more Jaime's character and his city, the Khaji-Da Scarab, the search for Ted Kord etc.

Explore more the other Scarabs too that have been introduced across the years and recently in his Graduation Day comic book run.

Making Xolo wait and wait until it's time to put him somewhere will be a mistake.
