Previously, we covered an interview with Susan Sarandon that dropped a potential clue as to the status of Ted Kord in the upcoming Blue Beetle film, and a new interview with star Xolo Maridueña is only adding fuel to the fire.
Speaking to Fandango, Xolo implied that if the Blue Beetle movie does well at the box office and audiences respond favorably, expect James Gunn and the rest of the team at DC Studios to move forward with more Blue Beetle projects.
"I have had the pleasure of getting to speak to Mr. James Gunn and the whole DC fam. At the end of the day, we have to cross this first hill and introduce Jaime to the world. It’s up to the audience to watch the movie, if it does well, we get to open more doors for more Blue Beetles. And not even just the people up here, we have a whole thing setup...So many Beetles to choose from, so many comics to choose from...We're ready to do it again, if the crowd wants it."
Again, regardless of what's being said at the moment, James Gunn and co. are taking a wait-and-see approach before deciding on what characters and actors, prior to the release of Superman: Legacy, will move forward into the new DC cinematic universe.
Previously Gunn, stated, "Everything from Superman forward…will be canon and will be connected. We're using some actors from the past. We're not using other actors from the past, but everything from that moment will be connected and consistent."
Notice that since The Flash's historic box office failure, there's been no chatter about any of those characters moving forward. Prior to The Flash's release, Gunn's comment on Ezra Miller potentially continuing on as Barry Allen was, "We're just going to have to wait and see. We'll see how things go."
It's probably a safe assumption that Miller's time as Barry Allen is over and that a similar fate will await Maridueña if Blue Beetle fails.
The question that remains is centered around a rumored Ted Kord cameo and whether that actor continues forward or not. As part of the Chapter 1: Gods and Monsters slate, there's a Booster Gold TV series in development, and there are currently rumors swirling that the Ted Kord introduced in Blue Beetle will appear in the show.
