Harrison Ford Officially Joins CAPTAIN AMERICA: NEW WORLD ORDER As General Thunderbolt Ross

It's finally official.

Deadline has confirmed that Harrison Ford is joining the Marvel Cinematic Universe as the new General Thaddeus "Thunderbolt" Ross, and is all set to make his debut in 2024's Captain America: New World Order, where he'll star opposite leading man Anthony Mackie.

The Ankler's Jeff Sneider was the first to report the news last month, revealing that Marvel Studios had intended on making the announcement at the D23 Expo, but they were blocked by Lucasfilm, who wanted to keep all the Ford focus on his Indiana Jones swan song.

The Star Wars and Blade Runner legend takes over the role from the late William Hurt, who played the part five times (The Incredible HulkCaptain America: Civil WarAvengers: Infinity WarAvengers: Endgame, and Black Widow).

Following his first appearance in Captain America: New World Order, he'll assume a larger role in Thunderbolts later that year, where he'll presumably lead the team. It's hard to say whether we'll ever see him transform into the Red Hulk, but it certainly can't be ruled out, especially with more Hulk (Mark Ruffalo) and She-Hulk (Tatiana Maslany) adventures on the horizon.

Julius Onah is directing Captain America: New World Order, with a screenplay from Malcolm Spellman and Dalan Musson. The cast will feature Anthony Mackie as Sam Wilson/Captain America, Danny Ramirez as Joaquín Torres/Falcon, Tim Blake Nelson as Samuel Sterns/Leader, Carl Lumbly as Isaiah Bradley, and Shira Haas as Ruth Bat-Seraph/Sabra. It's set to open in theaters on May 3, 2024.

Jake Schreier is helming Thunderbolts, utilizing a screenplay from Eric Pearson. The ensemble cast consists of Florence Pugh as Yelena Belova, Sebastian Stan as Bucky Barnes/Winter Soldier, Wyatt Russell as John Walker/U.S. Agent, Olga Kurylenko as Antonia Dreykov/Taskmaster, David Harbour as Alexei Shostakov/Red Guardian, Hannah John-Kamen as Ava Starr/Ghost, and Julia Louis-Dreyfus as Contessa Valentina Allegra de Fontaine. The team-up title hits theaters on July 26, 2024.

@Matador - They give you Harrison Ford and you say "Meh".

You got more jade in you than the Jade Giant himself.

@ObserverIO - It's just my opinion but the guy seems to want to put any effort into his roles he just does it to collect a pay check hell he didn't even want to be Solo any more he only did it so he could get killed off.

So him putting any effort in this roles leaves me doubting especially IF they go Red Hulk route hell Dennis Quaid would have been a better fit.

Well…where is my crow. It’s lunch time.

I really doubted these reports. But Ford is as good a replacement as any, even if this casting really shines a brighter light on the hypocrisy of not recasting T’challa.

This is a f*cking mistake.

Harrison Ford is too big, he should play a new character, i can't picture him staring at the Avengers, New Cap or whatever like he knows them since day 1, it's gonna be strange af.

I know some mf is gonna bring Rhodey but it ain't the same.

@Doomsday8888 - Allow me to be that MF. I mean, you're right he's probably too big for the role. Rhodey is an actual character whereas Ross has been an exposition mouth piece when he shows up. Rhodey is an actual character so his replacement should be handled more delicately. Replacing Ross is an inconsequential nonissue that could be done by anyone.

@Reeds2Much - This. Exactly what I feel with people bringing up that it contradicts the T’Challa decision.

Ross has been a thorn more than anything. His most prominent role was still in Incredible Hulk. Hell, the Banner he was introduced with was recast. The general public will either not know the difference or even remember who Ross was. It’s just not on an equal playing field in regards to these characters. And this is no disrespect to Hurt, but Ross just hasn’t been a memorable character in the MCU and that’s only because he’s been written with so little to do. With Thunderbolts on the way, maybe now that’ll change. Maybe eventually, Red Hulk can be done. But as it stands, the character has just been someone who barely gets in the way. I don’t see the issue at all in recasting.
