Following the death of actor William Hurt, Marvel Studios is rumoured to be looking for a new General "Thunderbolt" Ross for Thunderbolts, with Harrison Ford said to be a top contender to play the villain.

William Hurt's health appeared to be on the decline for some time before he passed away this year, something that was evident from the fact that VFX was used to improve his appearance in Black Widow. His death struck a blow to Hollywood as the actor isn't easy to replace, though it does seem Marvel Studios isn't finished with General "Thunderbolt" Ross yet.

With a movie called Thunderbolts on the horizon, that isn't overly surprising, especially as all signs point to Marvel Studios potentially introducing Red Hulk in the not-too-distant future.

Now, scooper Jeff Sneider (who admittedly has something of a spotty track record) is claiming that Star Wars and Indiana Jones legend Harrison Ford is Marvel Studios' top choice to play Ross in Thunderbolts. It's said that the studio considered making his involvement in the project known at D23 but didn't want to overshadow his presence at the event to hype Indiana Jones 5.

If true, this is huge and could mean that Ford is about to Hulk out in the MCU.

There had been speculation that Thunderbolts might reveal that Ross had died, with the team named in his honour. However, it does arguably make more sense to recast the antagonist, particularly as there's still so much to be done with the character.

While Hurt delivered a memorable portrayal of the General in The Incredible Hulk, Captain America: Civil War, Avengers: Infinity War, and Black Widow, the character played a small enough role in the MCU that recasting him wouldn't be overly jarring. Only time will tell whether this rumour is true, but we're definitely intrigued.

Thunderbolts is set to be released in theatres on July 26, 2024.

Doubt.

@TheManWithoutFear - As much as I would never have thought this sort of casting to happen, I could see it happening if he dies in the film, and the team is then called Thunderbolts in his honor. Especially presuming his role won't require too much ultimate screentime from him (Nick Fury, for example, only had about 18 minutes screen time in the 2-hour first Avengers film), given they have to serve the rest of the team and story as well; plus it Elaine Benes is really gonna be the team builder, he probably has an even smaller role. And especially if a portion of his time would be as Red Hulk (meaning entirely done with CGI, cause he ain't doing motion capture), it's an easy paycheck, unless a door falls on him again.

@TheManWithoutFear - If Robert Redford and Glenn Close can do it for their kids, i am sure Harrison can do the same.

@TheManWithoutFear - If they were smart they would bring back Thunderbolt Ross (Sam Elliot) from the first movie with Eric Bana.

@MosquitoFarmer - Name them Thunderbolts in his honour and if you need a similar replacement character bring in General Talbot. And cast who you want (doesn't have to be the guy from Agents of SHIELD).

As much as I love Harrison Ford and am looking forward to Indy 5, I don’t think this would be the right role for him to play at his age, especially if they’re going to consider Hulking him out

@HagridsHole1 - Plus he probably doesn't want to wear a motion capture suit

@HagridsHole1 - Preferably IMO Dennis Quaid could be a better fit as Thunderbolt Ross can do animated and might be a better Red Hulk when voicing him.

For all the "why didn't they recast T'Challa" comments that are going to pop up, please be considerate of the cast who became a family during the first movie.

@MCUKnight11 - well according to members of his actual family he would have been for a recast

@dracula - It was just his brother and no one else. The decision has already been made so wait until Wakanda forever to judge if it was a good idea or not.

This is absolutely the right mindset and I echo every sentiment stated here.

@MCUKnight11 - ...and they can still be a family. Just with a new member.

Also, if his family said it should've been a recast, I'd say it's generally a bad idea and I'm boycotting the movie because of it.

@MCUKnight11 - oh shut the [frick] up! The movie was mediocre and had armored CGI rhinos. It was hardly anything special. Just more capeshit.

@Waifuslayer - No need for that hostility. You didn’t like it, that’s on you. No need to curse out another user just for being rational about the decision. Grow up.

@DTor91 - how is this delusion of Black Panther being some sort of pinnacle of cinema rational? It's absolute bullshit and I'm sick of people acting like its some untouchable masterpiece. It's dull, predictable, devoid of tension and has some of the worst vfx work in recent history.
