What worked?:
I’ve seen a lot of films in the past few months. And this is by far my favourite. Not because I’m into comic books or anything, but because this is a film that has a great balance of everything. Well delivered humour, amazing action sequences, and even a little love story. Chris Evans brings his A game to the title role of Steve Rogers aka Captain America, and his portayal of the small weak asthmatic turned Super Soldier is on par with Robert Downey Jnr in ‘Iron Man’ and Chris Hemsworth as ‘Thor’.
The one other concern I had going in was that this film would be just a bridge to ‘The Avengers’ which is being released next year, featuring Captain America, Iron Man, Hulk & Thor. ‘Iron Man 2’ felt very much like it was just cramming Avengers references in for the hell of it, however Cap doesn’t. There are some nice subtle references, like Tony Stark’s dad Howard Stark playing a large part, but it doesn’t feel forced. Maybe it’s the WW2 setting that does it, but it plays out like a separate film, and not just a sequel to ‘Iron Man’ or ‘Thor’.
What didn’t work?:
The screening I attended was in 3D, and that really annoyed me. This seems to be one of those films that has been converted to 3D for no reason other than making more money. Some of the scenes seemed blurry in the 3D format, and it really detracted from the whole experience. So if you get the chance, try and see the film in 2D.
