In 2014, Marvel Studios released Captain America: The Winter Soldier and Guardians of the Galaxy, two movies which changed the Marvel Cinematic Universe forever. In the case of the former, the Russo Brothers brought a whole new style of action to the genre and put Steve Rogers on a path that is still playing out to this very day.

The movie also introduced (or re-introduced) another character who has played a key role in the MCU and will more than likely continue to do so moving forward. We are, of course, talking about Bucky, Steve's best friend from World War II who was resurrected by HYDRA as the Winter Soldier.

Here, you'll find some amazing pieces of concept art showcasing alternate designs for the character, including different arms, masks, and uniforms. There are also some keyframes showcasing the moment that The Winter Soldier took aim at S.H.I.E.L.D. Director Nick Fury during an incredible action sequence brought to the big screen by the Russo Brothers.

In order to bring The Winter Soldier to the big screen, Marvel clearly went through a lot of different ideas, some of which paid homage to the source material and others that are totally new...

These drastically different takes on The Winter Soldier showcase both new arm designs and masks. The second is particularly cool, especially as it's similar to Bucky's domino mask from the comics.

The Winter Soldier had a pretty simple look in the comic book and that was ultimately brought to the big screen. However, Marvel Studios clearly played around with some ideas you'll see below.

This one is particularly interesting, especially as Bucky's metal arm is covered up by his costume. Thinking about it, that would have made more sense as it would help the villain blend in.

This arm design is really cool and I love the way the red star has been incorporated. However, it's hard to fault the Russo Brothers for ultimately deciding to stick closely to the source material.

The mask we ended up getting in the movie did a great job of disguising Bucky's identity and the paint around his eyes was a clever way to pay homage to his domino mask from the comic books.

The current version of Bucky's arm (which was created by Shuri) doesn't have a star on the side, so here's hoping if he does ultimately become Captain America, the hero gets one again.

This artwork depicts the moment when The Winter Soldier tries (and fails) to take down S.H.I.E.L.D. Director Nick Fury. It was a cool sequence and a great way to introduce the beloved character.

One of the best designed characters in the MCU, and most layered and complex. Russo’s couldn’t have done a better job.

One thing I really like is they didn’t take the cheap way out by having him wear a jacket covering his arm most of the time. I like how his arm is always showing how badass it is

Come to think of it, this might be actually be true. Off the top of my head I can't think of any superhero movie before TWS that had that Bourne and The Raid inspired action. Though one could say Arrow did it first but for superhero TV.

I always felt like they should have had his goggles polarize to clear lenses. That’d be a legit reason for him to have the look of the domino mask.

I wish we got the domino mask, but he still looked badass.
