With principal photography getting underway last week in Los Angeles, Marvel has now officially announced the start of production on their next blockbuster franchise, Captain Marvel.

Following their Los Angeles schedule, filming will move on to Fresno, California and will also film in several locations in Louisana, including Baton Rouge and New Orleans.

Their press release also reconfirms the film's 1990s setting and teases that the basic story will follow a galactic war between two alien races, which we can safely presume are the Kree and the Skrulls. Here's the official synopsis: "Based on the Marvel comic character first appearing in 1968, the story follows Carol Danvers as she becomes one of the universe’s most powerful heroes when Earth is caught in the middle of a galactic war between two alien races. Set in the 1990s, “Captain Marvel” is an all-new adventure from a previously unseen period in the history of the Marvel Cinematic Universe."

Mississippi Grind directors Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck are helming the 2019 feature with a script they co-wrote. Meg LeFauve, Nicole Perlman, Geneva Robertson-Dworet, Liz Flahive and Carly Mensch also contributed to the film's screenplay.

Academy Award-winner Brie Larson headlines as Carol Danvers with a supporting cast that features Academy Award-nominee Samuel L. Jackson (Avengers: Infinity War), Primetime Emmy-winner Ben Mendelsohn (Bloodline), 2x Academy Award-nominee Djimon Hounsou (Guardians of the Galaxy), 2x Golden Globe-nominee Lee Pace (Guardians of the Galaxy), Lashana Lynch (Brotherhood), Gemma Chan (Crazy Rich Asians), Algenis Perez Soto (Sambá), Rune Temte (Eddie the Eagle), McKenna Grace (Gifted), Clark Gregg (Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.), and 2x Academy Award-nominee Jude Law (Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald).

While a vast majority of the cast had been previously confirmed, Marvel was holding on to a few surprises as we see three currently dead characters in the present-day Marvel Cinematic Universe make their returns. Hounsou and Pace both reprise their roles as Korath and Ronan, respectively, from 2014's Guardians of the Galaxy while Gregg returns as Agent Phil Coulson for his first canon MCU appearance since 2012's The Avengers.

Plus, they've also released a behind-the-scenes photo of Larson with Brigadier General Jeannie Leavitt, 57th Wing Commander, taken during Larson's recent visit to Nellis Air Force Base. Check it out below:
