CAPTAIN MARVEL Scores $61.3M Friday; Soaring To $155M-$160 Million Opening Weekend
As expected, Marvel Studios' latest, Captain Marvel, has gotten off to a roaring start at both the domestic and global box office, collecting over $188.4M through Friday and should top $300M by Sunday.
Marvel Studios' Captain Marvel is soaring toward a possible $155 million to $160 million domestic launch following an exceptional $61.4 million collection on Friday, which should firmly cement itself as the seventh-highest opener in the Marvel Cinematic Universe ever, and the second-highest debut for a Marvel Studios origin story behind only Ryan Coogler's Black Panther.
As of Friday evening, the film, which stars Academy Award-winner Brie Larson (Avengers: Endgame) in the title role, has already earned $188.3 million worldwide ($61.3M domestic; $127M foreign) and by Monday morning, it should have easily surpassed $300 million globally.
It's also doing stellar business in China, already raking in $34.3 million, which is the second-highest launch for a Marvel Studios title in the Middle Kingdom, behind only Avengers: Infinity War.
Despite unwarranted pre-release criticism from the dark side of the internet, Captain Marvel has been received relatively well by critics and fans alike, currently boasting a 79% Certified Fresh certification on review aggregator RottenTomatoes and a 65 on fellow aggregator MetaCritic. While the film may not have been received quite as well as some of its MCU predecessors, it did still manage to earn a strong "A" CinemaScore from moviegoers, which should bode well for its box office prospects in the coming weeks.
