Captain Marvel has soared past expectations with a massive $153 million at the domestic box office, giving Marvel Studios' latest the best-performing opening weekend of the year. As previously reported, Carol Danvers' first big-screen adventure is surging towards an even more impressive $500 million globally to become the sixth-highest worldwide debut ever.

Initial box office tracking suggested that
Captain Marvel would take in around $135 million, which puts into perspective how greatly it has exceeded expectations. The movie is now officially the third-highest March opening of all time, behind
Batman v Superman ($166 million) and
Beauty and the Beast ($174 million).

Variety reports that it's also become the most successful film ever released to features a female composer.
