In Spider-Man: No Way Home, the Statue of Liberty received a makeover for...well, reasons which still aren't entirely clear. The landmark made for a great final battle location, though, and was recoloured and redesigned as a way of supposedly paying homage to Steve Rogers/Captain America.
The world presumably believes Steve is dead and, for all we know, he might well be. Marvel Studios has been deliberately vague when it comes to what happened to the hero after Avengers: Endgame and it seems Lady Liberty's new look has stuck.
In the latest trailer for The Marvels, we see the finished Statue and, upon closer inspection, it appears Cap's shield has been repaired and replaced the iconic torch.
This feels like a very deliberate way of making Earth-616's New York look unique and we can't help but wonder whether it will prove important in a future story tied to the Multiverse Saga. You may recall that Marvel Studios edited Ms. Marvel after it was released to change the Statue's colour, confirming both that and this Captain Marvel sequel take place after No Way Home.
Take a closer look at Lady Liberty below.
In The Marvels, Carol Danvers aka Captain Marvel has reclaimed her identity from the tyrannical Kree and taken revenge on the Supreme Intelligence. But unintended consequences see Carol shouldering the burden of a destabilized universe.
When her duties send her to an anomalous wormhole linked to a Kree revolutionary, her powers become entangled with that of Jersey City super-fan Kamala Khan, aka Ms. Marvel, and Carol’s estranged niece, now S.A.B.E.R. astronaut Captain Monica Rambeau. Together, this unlikely trio must team up and learn to work in concert to save the universe as "The Marvels."
The movie stars Brie Larson, Teyonah Parris, Iman Vellani, Samuel L. Jackson, Zawe Ashton and Park Seo-joon.
The Marvels is currently set to arrive in theaters on November 10.
