THE MARVELS Will Address Monica Rambeau's Beef With Carol Danvers Confirms Nia DaCosta

Despite their tight bond back when Monica Rambeau was just a child, the S.A.B.E.R. agent no longer has the 'warm and fuzzies' for her Aunt Carol.

Despite their close relationship as depicted in Captain Marvel, Monica Rambeau and Carol Danvers are no longer on the best of terms. This was hinted at in WandaVision and now confirmed in a new interview with The Marvel's director Nia DaCosta (Candyman).

"For a child to lose their aunt, and then to lose their mother - although she wasn't a child when her mother passed away - [she's left to] feel like she has no family. But then to see that her aunt has been popping to Earth every now and then, and off in space doing [stuff] for a bunch of other people and also not being able to reconcile any of that because she's never around — that can really create a wound. Monica definitely has a wound that she finally gets to address in this film.

In Captain Marvel, a young Monica helped Carol pick out her costume and then gave her a high five just as she rocketed off to space to help the Skrulls find a new homeworld.

That was the last Monica saw of Carol, as the effects of space travel seemingly caused Captain Marvel to age very little while back on Earth, many years had passed.

Despite their close bond growing up, Monica had to go through the devastating loss of her mother's cancer battle without the person that was essentially her second parent.

And according to DaCosta, Carol has been back to Earth several times recently, including taking on Thanos in Avengers: Endgame, and she's never checked in on Monica.

Do you think The Marvels will repeat the box office success of the first film? Let us know in the comment section below.

Barring any SAG-AFTRA strike-related delays, The Marvels is currently slated to hit theaters on November 10, 2023.

The Marvels will star Brie Larson (Short Term 12, Fast X) as Carol Danvers / Captain Marvel, Teyonah Parris (The Photograph, Candyman) as Monica Rambeau/Photon, Iman Vellani as Kamala Khan / Ms. Marvel, Zawe Ashton (Not Safe For Work, Nocturnal Animals) as Dar-Benn.

Also appearing in supporting roles are Gary Lewis (His Dark Materials, The Bay), Park Seo-joon (Itaewon Class, Concrete Utopia), and Samuel L. Jackson (Secret Invasion).

Teaming up changes everything everyone.

Carol Danvers aka Captain Marvel has reclaimed her identity from the tyrannical Kree and taken revenge on the Supreme Intelligence. But unintended consequences see Carol shouldering the burden of a destabilized universe.  When her duties send her to an anomalous wormhole linked to a Kree revolutionary, her powers become entangled with that of Jersey City super-fan, Kamala Khan aka Ms. Marvel, and Carol’s estranged niece Captain Monica Rambeau. Together, this unlikely trio must team-up and learn to work in concert to save the universe as ‘The Marvels.'

Not really an aunt though... Just a close friend that her mother had and she barely knew, to say it's her "second parent" feels very forced.

If the trailer for this is anything to go by, it won't come close the making the money the first one did. i'll probably end up seeing it, but not a day one movie for me.

@MotherGooseUPus - I don't think they expect this to make similar money, but if it ends up making $700M I don't think they're gonna be disappointed.

(PS this is not an invite for anyone to tell me how this had a $500M budget bcause be serious)

@WakandanQueen - $700 million would be a success for this. I’d be shocked if it made more than $500.

@mountainman - A BP->WF level drop gets it at about $700m. I think if it's well received, it will get there.

@WakandanQueen - Yeah I can see that. That movie did have the advantage of the send off for Boseman as a potential draw.

This one is so hard to predict. Cap Marvel hasn’t done much in the MCU since the first one and the 2 other leads are from shows so it’s tough to know what their draw will be.

But you’re right that it’ll depend on reviews and word of mouth. GOTG3 earned more than Quantumania because people liked it more.

@WakandanQueen - my guess is this will make between $400-600M... but who knows, crazier things have happened

DaCosta does sound like she had all the right priorities with this film!

I think it's quite interesting how Monica has all this frustration over Carol, as this aunt figure that she lost firstly when the Kree got her and then even when she came back bcause she had to mostly stay off Earth and visited home only few times. Meanwhile, Kamala is a fangirl who has no reason but to love Captain Marvel as the epic cool lady who protects the galaxy. You already got an interesting dynamic right then, different perspectives on these young women over their shared "hero".

Super glad to hear they are addressing that as that's something I wanted to see this movie cover since seeing Monica's annoyed reaction at Captain marvel being brought up in WandaVision. Like yeah this has to be a sore spot for her so I'm glad it's going to be addressed. I think it's especially good to do so here because The Marvels is all about these 3 ladies and their relationship. So you have super fan Kamala who is super excited to be along and idolizes carol and then you have Monica who probably is jaded and cyncial at the idea that Carol never visited her even after Maria died. Which Carol may not even know about.

Makes perfect sense that the woman who excused Wanda torturing thousands of people would be pissy about Carol going out in the universe to help other people.

@Radders - I swear disney has the weirdest morality.

Carol herself stole a guy's bike for telling her she should smile more.

To actually die while being at the side of your dying mother then coming back to learn she passed 5 years ago has to be crazy. Of course she has a bone to pick with her. She wasn't there for her mother at all

In Captain Marvel, it was a little puzzling because Carol was taken by the Kree and gone quite awhile. Hard to believe given her age that Monica would remember her so well.
