Despite their close relationship as depicted in Captain Marvel, Monica Rambeau and Carol Danvers are no longer on the best of terms. This was hinted at in WandaVision and now confirmed in a new interview with The Marvel's director Nia DaCosta (Candyman).
"For a child to lose their aunt, and then to lose their mother - although she wasn't a child when her mother passed away - [she's left to] feel like she has no family. But then to see that her aunt has been popping to Earth every now and then, and off in space doing [stuff] for a bunch of other people and also not being able to reconcile any of that because she's never around — that can really create a wound. Monica definitely has a wound that she finally gets to address in this film.”
In Captain Marvel, a young Monica helped Carol pick out her costume and then gave her a high five just as she rocketed off to space to help the Skrulls find a new homeworld.
That was the last Monica saw of Carol, as the effects of space travel seemingly caused Captain Marvel to age very little while back on Earth, many years had passed.
Despite their close bond growing up, Monica had to go through the devastating loss of her mother's cancer battle without the person that was essentially her second parent.
And according to DaCosta, Carol has been back to Earth several times recently, including taking on Thanos in Avengers: Endgame, and she's never checked in on Monica.
