Let's hear it for Captain America!
Deadline is reporting that Anthony Mackie (The Falcon and the Winter Soldier; Avengers: Endgame) has closed his deal to return as the titular hero in Marvel Studios' untitled Captain America 4.
Further details about the potential plot and cast are being kept under wraps, but last we heard, The Falcon and the Winter Soldier head writer Malcolm Spellman had been tapped to pen the screenplay alongside TFATWS staff writer Dalan Musson.
At this point in time, it's unclear whether co-star Sebastian Stan (The Falcon and the Winter Soldier; Avengers: Endgame) will be joining him, but based on the ending of their recently wrapped miniseries, it would be pretty surprising if he didn't return in some leading capacity.
It's also believed that Daniel Brühl (Baron Zemo), Emily VanCamp (Sharon Carter), Adepero Oduye (Sarah Wilson), Wyatt Russell (John Walker/U.S. Agent), and/or Julia Louis-Dreyfuss (Contessa Valentina Allegra de Fontaine) could reprise their roles, but it's all speculation for now.
For Mackie, this new film will mark his eighth appearance in the Marvel Cinematic Universe as Sam Wilson, following Captain America: The Winter Soldier, Avengers: Age of Ultron, Ant-Man, Captain America: Civil War, Avengers: Infinity War, Avengers: Endgame, and the aforementioned The Falcon and the Winter Soldier.
It's unclear when this project could head into production, but with their lead locked down, it seems like Kevin Feige and Marvel Studios may want this to move forward sooner rather than later, possibly even as a launching pad for the swiftly approaching Phase 5.
