ComicCritic87 Weekly Comic Reviews

Month- March 2012
Week #3- 3/21/12

Hey there friends, well I enjoyed the new review style but thanks to a few of you I have neglected to provide a proper grade to each comic. So this week I will be adding in a grade system. I will do it based on a percent scale from 0 to 100. It’s a very huge week of comics, so much to cover, let us begin.

Comics this Week

Dark Horse Comics: NONE THIS WEEK
DC Comics: Batman #7, Catwoman #7, Justice League #7, Wonder Woman #7
IDW Comics: Infes2ation: TMNT #2, Rocketeer Adventures 2 #1
Image Comics: NONE THIS WEEK
Marvel Comics: Amazing Spider-man #682, Fearless #11, Kick-ass 2 #7, Supercrooks #1, Thunderbolts #171

MUST READS

Batman #7- Written by Scott Snyder/Artwork by Greg Capullo
Story: The court of Owl’s send their Talon’s to reclaim Gotham while Grayson learns his true origin.
Review: A fantastic setup for the huge second part of this arc. The revelations are well suited to what is happening in the story.
Writing: Scott Snyder is pretty much the best thing about this Batman book. Score: 90
Artwork: Greg Capullo’s designs of the characters are some of the best. Score: 85
Pros: Writing and Artwork is top notch, Huge revelations revealed, setup for huge crossover
Cons: Night wing being a bit bossy
Grade: 87.5

Super Crooks #1- Written by Mark Millar/Artwork by Leinil Yu
Story: Johnny Bolt is freed from prison and helps a mentor by gathering up old friends for a heist
Review: A VERY well done first issue that takes a simple idea and ups the ante tenfold.
Writing: Millar lets loose and has fun with super powered people, good or bad. Score: 85
Artwork: Yu returning with amazing character designs is a plus. Score: 95
Pros: Millar & Yu back together, crazy setup for a story, super villains as the leads
Cons: Superheroes in America only?
Grade: 90

Wonder Woman #7- Written by Brian Azzerello/Artwork by Cliff Chiang
Story: Wonder Woman needs weaponry to save Zola. She discovers something more about the Amazon
Review: This new take on the character is one of the best; the revelation does make sense in a way.
Writing: Azzerello takes this heroine into a much darker story than her style. Score: 86
Artwork: Chiang’s style of the characters both human and gods are amazing. Score: 100
Pros: Revelation of the Amazons, Wonder Woman now doubting all she’s know
Cons: Cigarette smoking guy still tagging along
Score: 93

READABLE

Amazing Spider-man #682- Written by Dan Slott/Artwork by Stefano Caselli
Story: Doc Ock creates a powerful lens that can remove global warming, but Parker doesn’t buy it
Review: A well done start for a whole new event arc. The tension and questions are nicely paced.
Writing: Slott has fun with these iconic characters and world. Score: 75
Artwork: Caselli does a better job than Ramos in this story. The new suit design is awesome. Score: 80
Pros: Spider-man’s new suit, the ethics brought up, Parker’s life being better
Cons: Jameson (I’m getting sick and tired of him as a character at this point)
Score: 77.5

Catwoman #7- Written by Judd Winick/Artwork by Adriana Melo
Story: Catwoman steals a bunch of high end style cars, gets caught but saved by a young thief.
Review: A fun second arc starting up with ramifications from the prior one.
Writing: Winick does a great job with this character making her more than before. Score: 82
Artwork: Melo’s art still creates Selina in a super sexy style. Score: 80
Pros: Fun story, Sexy Selina, New Character, deeper elements for further stories
Cons: More exposition than action. Selina still not in her true element
Score: 81

Justice League #7- Written by Geoff Johns/Artwork by Gene Ha
Story: The newly formed League battles a giant monster.
Bonus Story: SHAZAM’s origins
Review: Both stories are well done but the first seems to be mainly filler.
Writing: Johns is good but a bit of a showoff. Score: 70
Artwork: Ha does a good job filling in but he’s no Lee. Score: 65
Pros: Action filled
Cons: Trevor and Diana’s “love story”, filler issue.
Score: 67.5

Kick-ass 2 #7- Written by Mark Millar/Artwork by JRJR
Story: The shocking conclusion to the second story arc. Major things shakeup the characters
Review: One of the best endings I have ever seen in a Millar story. Sequel hinted at
Writing: Millar is pure awesome but even so-so Millar is good. Score: 74
Artwork: JRJR’s art fits with this story and characters, not his best but he’s good. Score: 75
Pros: Epic ending, Bloody battle, Hit-Girl, Dave laying the smack down on The MF’er
Cons: Hit-girl overkill
Score: 74.5

Rocketeer Adventures 2 #1- Written by various writers/ Artwork by various artists
Story: Three short stories about the continuing adventures of the Rocketeer.
Review: A huge fan of the character, these stories are fun and different.
Writing: Story 1 is great, Story 2 is cartoony, and Story 3 is well done. Score: 78
Artwork: Story 1 is well done, Story 2 is meh, and Story 3 is cartoony: 80
Pros: Fun and various styles of stories being told.
Cons: only 3 stories

PASS/FANS ONLY

Fear Itself: The Fearless #11- Written by Bunn, Fraction, and Yost/Artwork by Mark Bagley
Story: The Avengers, New Avengers, FF, and all heroes battle Destroyer Armor Sin.
Review: A fun action filled issue with a somewhat startling ending.
Writing: The team does a good job with this series. Score: 68
Artwork: Bagley does an admirable job with the character designs. Score: 67
Pros: Fun story, Valkyrie centric story expanding her role in the Marvel Universe
Cons: Sin’s over the top plan, Crossbones being “noble”, Shock ending
Score: 67.5

Infes2ation: TMNT #2- Written by Tristan Jones/Artwork by Mark Torres
Story: The Turtles battle one of the elder gods
Review: Fun crossover story with great action scenes
Writing: Jones does a good job with the crossover story and concept. Score: 70
Artwork: Mike Mignola style artwork but it actually fits with this story. Score: 68
Pros: Cthulhu inspired story with the Turtles
Cons: Donatello not saying what it truly is
Score: 69

Thunderbolts #171- Written by Jeff Parker/Artwork by Kev Walker
Story: Songbird is on a tropical vacation….FROM HELL
Review: Filler story with a character I’m barely interested in.
Writing: Parker keeps the story nicely paced. Score: 57
Artwork: Walker is a treat and does great designs. Score: 65
Pros: Songbird in a Bikini
Cons: Foot licking creature (?)
Score: 61

That’s all for this week friends, next week is a much smaller week. I will be looking forward to that day when it comes. Catch you all later.

uh Gene ha>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>Jim Lee and his scratchy, rushed art. Also, loved Supercrooks, character development is something I haven't seen a lot of from Millar since the pre-Wanted era, and this had it in spades. Plus, the plot was fun

I kind of agree with you on kick-ass yeah and batman was awesome as well.

Batman and WW are some of my favorite comics out right now. Glad to see their both on your top picks.

I can't wait for Kick-Ass and Ends of the Earth is finally here. I'll probably get Supercrooks in tpb.

Great Reviews Man!
