COMICS: First Look At Scott Synder's BATMAN "Zero Year"

Here we have our very first preview of Scott Snyder and Greg Capullo’s upcoming Zero Year, which will give is a revamped look back at the first year in the career of Bruce Wayne as Batman. The 3 pages are a little on the small side, but you can blame NY Post for that!

Beginning in Batman #21, Zero Year will give us a much lighter take on the origin of the Caped Crusader that we are used to seeing. “I can only tell you I never expected to be drawing Gotham as Scott has it written in the first issue,” Capullo tells Parallel Worlds. “Within the first five pages of the first script, I was like WTF! You know, what is going on in this thing?”

“Yeah, the fun of it is,” adds Snyder, “you will open the book, and see from Page 1, 2 and 3, and 4, how different it is from Year One. You’re going to close it back up and look at the cover to make sure you picked up the right book!”

BATMAN #21
Written by SCOTT SNYDER
Backup story written by SCOTT SNYDER and JAMES TYNION IV
Art by GREG CAPULLO and DANNY MIKI

Witness The New 52 origin of The Dark Knight in BATMAN: ZERO YEAR! Twists and turns are around every corner as Bruce Wayne takes the final steps toward his destiny! And in the backup story, learn more about how different Gotham City was at this dangerous point in time.

Batman Begins did it best. Hands down,

This is a waste of time. Should have done one of the Robin's or some other character who's backstory is all messed up b/c of The New 52

@Kryptonian - I have no idea what its about, all I know is that its Scott Snyder, and Jim Lee, which means its going on my pull list. Cant wait for Batman Year Zero either. Scott Snyder has been on fire since the start of the new 52. I wish he had stayed on Swamp Thing.

I'm a big fan of them going for the lighter tone. I love a batman book with darker themes - that's where batman thrives, as Snyder has shown us. So to make it lighter for the beginning of Zero Year and then develop into the darker story that Batman becomes as Bruce becomes Batman is kind of genius, and adds to the ongoing idea of Gotham mirroring the Batman.

With the massive success of Court of Owls and then Death of the Family, I don't understand why they would kill the momentum they had going by doing yet another Batman origin story. And if I remember correctly, this is supposed to last for a whole year..

They just went through the trouble of spinning Talon out of the Court of Owls into his own series. I think they should have done a Batman/Talon story arc that spans both books. This would have given some popularity to Talon and made another strong addition to the Bat universe. Just my opinion.

This is gonna be great! Snyder hasn't let me down yet. I LOVE year one. I own the book and animated film but to remain relevant mythologies have to be updated!

Can't wait to see what my current favorite writer Snyder and all time favorite artist Lee bring in Supes: Unchained. I just don't see how it could fail with those two.

Didn't DC buy those characters from another company? I think it was Charlton Comics actually.

Don't care for Bats having that tech to make him stick to surfaces like Spidey.
It's like in The Dark Knight movie when he had Daredevil's sonar.

Batman does use weapons & gadgets but lets not go overboard here creators..what's next, will he have a power ring?

Batman year one part zero! yay!

and what is Snyder's obsession with the [frick]ing city?!?!!? The book is about BATMAN, Snyder, NOT only [frick]ing gotham!

It's like Geoff Johns obsession with the dead and Didio's obsession with evil...

Let's try to be more creative, gentlemen!!!

@sameoldthing: or a suit made of armor???

I agree... he's all about technology...and this IS a comic book were talking about, but Snyder should ground his stuff a little bit more. That's what's cool about batman. He's realistic--- Spidey-boots is just TOO sci-fi for me on a batman book

SMH. Why do people perpetuate this ridiculous DC v. Marvel thing? There really WAS a difference between the two back in the Silver Age. Most people here were not even alive then. And most of us who were around weren't old enough to be reading comics yet. There has been so much crossover of writers and artists since then that the only real difference between the two for many years has been the names of the characters. Give it a rest!

Now, as to the story being told here, I find it intriguing that someone is willing to try doing the story of Batman's early days in Gotham, considering the excellent Year One, which is still a very influential story 25 years later. I'm not counting Batman Begins here since movie universes are often quite different from comics canon. This could be good, though, because it appears to be taking a lighter tone and trying to stand alone as its own story, rather than just rehashing old stories. I also like the art.

If you think this art is horrible, then don't buy it. I am constantly amazed at the art this team puts out. I love it. I'll be buying it. I'll be curling up with it at night. I might even take it out behind the junior high and get it pregnant.

SuperJagerNaut, oh really?
I guess Superman didn't come out before Marvel and that Kingdom Come is a total rehash of Civil War.

Either way, I read and enjoy both comics and you don't see me bitchin'.

Looks good. We need to put the "Batman is just a ninja with no detective skills" notion behind us. There was some light shed on Bats' training some 20 years ago, but they should go more into depth. Snyder can do it.

Why would this teach Begins fans a lesson? It was a good movie and is separate from comics lore. Even if they were similar things that's like saying Casino Royale taught Dr. No fans a hard lesson. Makes no sense - all this stuff boils down to personal preference
