COMICS: Jeff Lemire To Take Over On JUSTICE LEAGUE DARK

Beginning with issue #9, Lemire (Animal Man, Sweet Tooth) will take the reins of the brilliant JLD. He teases cross-overs with the regular Justice League, as well as a classic villain re-imagined..

It seems the Justice League Dark will be in for some restructuring as Jeff Lemire takes over from Peter Milligan as writer from issue #9. Speaking to Dc's The Source, Lemire gives us an idea of what to expect, teases big changes to the team with new characters and a classic JL villain, and explains why this team are among his favorite characters in the DCU..

“This is my dream gig at DC Comics, no doubt about it. The characters in Justice League Dark are my absolute favorite in the DC Comics stable, and I can’t believe I’m actually getting a chance to write John Constantine, Zatanna and Deadman (as well as a few new team members!).

I have a huge amount of respect for Peter Milligan. I’ve loved everything he’s done since his original SHADE run in the pre-Vertigo days of DC to his current run on Hellblazer and JL Dark. It’s a bit daunting to take over this title from someone who I revere as much as Peter, but at the same time I can’t help but be inspired by the work he’s already done with this book.

I obviously have my own ideas for the title as well, and can’t wait to share them with readers. One of the things I’m anxious to explore is just why the name “Justice League” is in the title of this book? I want to explore and create new connections between this team of mystical misfits and Geoff and Jim’s big guns in The Justice League. On that note, Geoff and I have had many discussions on how to link our two books and make the Justice League franchises connect in new and unexpected ways. More on that in the near future…

So, what else can you expect from the “New” Justice League Dark? Well, you’ll see an old haunt becoming the team’s new HQ. Constantine, the master manipulator that he is, will emerge as the clear leader of the team, and there will be 2 new members as well! (Hint one’s a man and one’s a woman. One uses magic, one doesn’t.) Not enough….hmmm…how about a classic Justice League villain re-imagined as The Justice League Dark’s new arc-enemy? And that’s just the start. I have a huge storyline planned with implications across the Dark line of books.

I would also be remiss if I didn’t mention that the amazingly talented Mikal Janin will be staying on board to draw all of this fun stuff, and I couldn’t be happier about that. I’ve loved Mikal’s work since I first saw it in the Flashpoint: Deadman mini-series and I think Mikal is the perfect artist for this book. And I can already tell by our initial talks that this will be the start of a great partnership. And we’re both lucky to have the incomparable Ryan Sook making us look good.

I’m pretty damn excited to be writing Justice League Dark. And I hope you’ll join me as I take you and these characters into the darkest, strangest corners of the DCU and beyond!”

Is it too much to hope that one of the new team members will be The Sandman? Course it is. But who do you guys think will be joining the ranks of these most bizarre heroes? And what about this classic Justice League villain?

I LOVE LOVE LOVE Justice League Dark....I haven't read animal man but I heard its pretty good. This writer seems to be well talented so lets see if he can really deliver. Hearing that the team will be changing sounds like a great idea....I wonder who will be on the team in May

I just don't see what's so good about "the rot" and "the red". Seriously, i find Animal Man's series to be a complete and utter bore. JLD was way better and i hope he doesn't sleep gas it to hell.

At least Janin stays on board. The art in Animal Man makes Liefeld's art seem publishable.

I've been a Jeff Lemire fan for some time. Essex County is in my top 10 favorite comics. I thought JLD was kinda slow and didnt really click for me, but with Lemire at the helm I'm back on board. Animal Man is aces! This is sure to be a winner.

Has Constantine been on a team before?

I need to catch up on the last couple issues of both Animal Man and JLD but enjoyed what i've read of both a lot.

DC is dumb. Change after change after change. How about New Logo and rebooted comics and stick to it? No, they've already canceled some of the New 52 and now they're changing writers on comics that have gone only 9 issues? They have no organization whatsoever.

Is this title any good? Animal Man is great

WonderMoose: "They have no organization whatsoever."

Ain't that the truth.

And this is why DC is forever 2nd place. Superman, superboy, supergirl, superdog, supercar, superhouse, superfriend(s), etc. There is no originality within the confines of the characters. DC continues to take a great idea and tries to do spin offs and make them interesting. WHY!? They could actually trump Marvel should they ever just purge the spin offs. GET WITH IT DC!!!!

Wow ... just wow

How original is that? JLD

Never heard that before [cough-cough] Dark Avengers ...

The only similarity to both comics is that their titles contain the word "dark".

Dark Avengers is a team of villains and JLD are a team of hero's. Not the same...

I know of Constantine, know Darkman and Zatana pretty well... but who is the fourth character?

That's Shade The Changing Man, he had his own Vertigo title a while ago. Also Madame Xanadu in the background.

@intrude:

I completely agree man. Both companies are guilty of this. Its honestly drives me nuts.

Why in the hell is Wolverine and Spider Man in the Avengers?! Hey, lets just take any form of independent story lines that make them unique and interesting, and make an all star team that lowers enjoyability for the origniality. SO DUMB!

@MassExecutions He was part of "The Trenchcoat Brigade".

Animal Man and JLD are the best out of the New 52.

Constantine as leader? Like it, John's the coolest CB anti-hero and one charming but amoral and manipulative bastard (I'm a huge fan of his Vertigo title). If he's calling the shots, you can bet some of his teammates won't stay alive for long.

Shade needs to get even crazier!

At least DC just changes creative teams instead of canceling books left and right like DC

@Weed....thats very true, Marvel loves to cancel a book rather than just switching out writers and artists.

I'll bet the re-imagined villian will be Felix Faust.

Damn there are alot of negetive Nellies 'round here. I know message boards and such are full of them, but christ why even comment on an article you know you have no interest in. And can we please stop comparing DC and Marvel. As a dedicated reader I read and support both companies and then some. Follow writers and not characters and brands. Close mindedness will only get you stale stories.

@RorMachine I would not mind seeing The Spectre or Sandman as the new male member.

Or it could have modern day Jason Blood/Etrigan the Demon joining the team.
