Nolan's Superman & Watchmen 2 News Dismissed as 'Rumors' by DC President

The head of the new DC subdivision of Warner Brothers laughs at the recent rumors regarding Chris Nolan's involvement with a Superman movie and a Watchmen Sequel.

Earlier today, veteran creator Jim Lee was named co-publisher of DC Comics alongside former executive Dan DiDio; while writer Geoff Johns was named Chief Creative Officer of DC Entertainment. Only hours after this announcement, MTV News spoke with DC Entertainment President Diane Nelson about the new direction of the company. Part of the discussion was the highly talked about Deadline.com rumor regarding Batman director Christopher Nolan 'godfathering' a new Superman movie. MTV asked if there was any validity to this information that swept across the internet,

"Wouldn't you like to know,"
she said with a laugh. "We don't have any plans about that, and as I've mentioned, in the coming months we'll be making a lot of announcements about what our content plans will be. But right now, that's nothing but rumor — and we frankly don't say a whole lot more about rumor than that, so..."

After the surge of approval from fans around the world, it's hard to imagine why DC/Warner Bros. would debunk that news unless, of course, it was nothing more than misinformation.

What of the Watchmen movie/comic sequel (or prequel) news that had fans outraged?

"No, that's all rumor," she replied. "I'm not sure where it came from. We'll be looking closely at our whole library and making sure we're looking for opportunities to mine every property where it makes sense, and with integrity, but that's just rumor."

She repeated, "No, there are no plans to do that."

@LEEE: I'm with you totally about a Death of Superman story... How hard could that be? It could take 3 films and they can even use more than one actor to be the different Man of Steel. What do you think?

I can live with no Nolan on Superman, it's not like he was directing or anything, but it would have been cool. Watchmen 2, my God, I don't even want to get into that.

Just make the f*cking reboot already. Get a new unknown in the tights, put him up against Brainiac, get a kick ass director (cough JJ Abrams cough) behind the camera, problem solved!

Oh, and give us a great Flash movie, centered around Barry, with flashy (pun very much intended) effects and really fresh action sequences.

Throw us a bone with an epic, Greek mythology-based Wonder Woman adventure.

And while you're at it, get working on a kick-ass Green Arrow film with everyone's favorite emerald archer taking down criminals alongside Black Canary.

Come on WB, you've got a wealth of great stories and characters underneath you, time to use them! At least we have Green Lantern at the moment though.

Well she said a lot of nothing.

@Multi I can only have wet dreams about a TransMet series on Showtime or HBO. As much as I love Preacher I think I would take a TransMet series first. I find its more releveant due to the media/PC/drawn from the news headlines element.

This is all fine. I knew it was kind of fishy. As long as a director with enough vision is heading it that is loyal to source material and the essence of the character, I'll be fine with it.
MovieMisfit
MovieMisfit - 2/18/2010, 8:48 PM
So basically there is no real development taking place yet on a new Superman movie. That sucks.

The "Watchmen 2" thing was an obvious rumor. A little prequel with just Rorschach would have been cool though [Only IF Alan Moore decided to write it].

She only debunked Watchmen 2 rumor, not the Nolan one, she seemed to avoid answering it actually, which means it's probably true and they can't (by contract probably) legally say anything before a proper announcement.

I think that the rumour about Nolan's involvement with Superman turns out not to have been a mistake - she very much seems to be avoiding giving a straight yes or no answer when asked so there's still a very good chance it's true hopefully!

As for Watchmen 2, thank God that was no more than a rumour! Characters like Superman, Wonder Woman and Flash are all easily translated into live action (as has already been proved years ago in TV series and movies) so DC/WB really need to start pulling their fingers out not only for the fans, but surely itt makes sense for them to create a whole bunch of new superhero franchises from a financial point of view!

I'm just glad Marvel are getting on with putting together a whole movie universe! :)

@bropous no they have not. And this is bad news, we heard that a new Superman movie was coming from this news about Nolan. So if its not true then that means no new Superman movie is planned and they are going to lose their rights. The interviewer should have asked about Superman sometimes I want to ring reporters necks for not asking the right questions.

I guess it looks like we are not getting a Superman movie after all. Sounds like because Marvel has all this exciting stuff coming DC is just pretending to have more stuff in the works. It also seems they are not planning anything but Batman 2 and GL. This sucks because I like DC more.
MisterFixit
MisterFixit - 2/19/2010, 1:29 AM
I knew that the whole rights are in the hands of the DC until 2013. After that date the court could take them off. But the movie rights would expire even before that date,if it had not complied with a clause requiring Warner to start (only start) the production of a new film by 2011

guys, yes she DID answer the Nolan invlovement question. read it again. she said,

"But right now, that's nothing but rumor — and we frankly don't say a whole lot more about rumor than that, so..."

does she really need to spell it out more than that?? she flat out said, "no, thats a rumor". what else does she need to say? stop with the wishful thinking, i think its clouding your reading ability. :)

not necessarily. it just means that nolan isn't involved.
Vital
Vital - 2/19/2010, 6:42 AM
Corndog, she didn't say it wasn't true, she said "right now it's just a rumor" meaning they plan on announcing it later that he's involved in some form. Don't talk shit dude, I left movieweb.com because of people like that. No offense.

Or, this is merely speculation, but maybe she thought it was funny cause they are planning on announcing the 3rd Batman movie with Nolan on board and she knows how excited we are gonna be about it. I mean, why else would you "laugh" over those rumors, they aren't even ridiculous or impossible so that's why I'm like 'hmm' what is she really trying to say through her "smile" if you will. So the Superman thing is probably untrue, and Nolan has no part in that, but they ARE intending to announce Batman 3. That's what I think. My gut is saying there is something fishy going on and until they announce whatever it is, I'm gonna speculate. I mean, it's not like I'm way off or being ridiculous here like most people giving out wishlists of directors and actors lol. "I think they should annouce Zack Synder directing The Man of Steel", or whatever lol.

Being a follower of Deadline.com, I would venture to say it's more likely that D.C. wants to make an official announcement before talking about Nolan's role with the Superman movie. I'm not sure I've ever seen a story there that wasn't properly sourced and was put up as just a rumour: They are very good at checking for the legitimacy of stories and don't post them unless they have significant information to back them up. I'd be very surprised if Nolan isn't Godfathering the Superman movie like Deadline.com says he is.

Leee: I'm with you on a lot of things, but while the Death/rebirth saga of Superman was a very good story, I honestly can't compare it to LOTR. LOTR still stands to this day as one of the three best fictional stories I've ever read (the others being The Stand and The Watchmen).

Speaking of which, I'm glad to see that this whole "Watchmen 2" thing was just a rumor- someone's idea of a really tasteless joke. Still, I don't put anything past DC or Marvel these days, so it really wouldn't surprise me if we saw a whole series of "prequels" or sequels to the original 12-part story. After all, there's money to be made, and characters to be whored out here!

@tea and @CorndogBurglar The only news that we have had on another Superman movie was this thing with Nolan and if its not true then there is no plans for another Superman movie and WB is about to lose their rights. I believe that WB lost $150 mil off Superman Returns so they are reluctant to do another. It also seems that the only way WB/DC are going to be able to keep Superman in their comics and other media is to pay off the family and I see no steps toward that from either side for that to happen.

@ vital

i wasn't talking shit, i was saying what she said. don't be so soft skinned, i even put a smiley face to show that i'm not trying to be a dick. also, you're the one that was calling people who have been longtime members of this site "trolls" in another article, so don't talk to me about shit talking.

@ dmon

the article says news will be coming out soon about their movie plans. superman is probably one of those movies. this is just saying that Nolan isn't involved with a superman movie, NOT that a superman movie isn't being made.

and remember, they only have to have a Supes movie in production to keep the rights. it doesn't have to be a finshed movie. they have a whole year to start production on a new Supes movie. and if the rumors are true about DC creating a combined movie universe like marvel, then you better believe Supes will be a part of it!
Dmon
Dmon - 2/19/2010, 9:04 AM
@CorndogBurglar It still said nothing of Superman other then the rumor about Nolan and Supes being wrong. The other movie announcements could just be about Batman or GL possibly the Flash or other DC properties that there has already been some news on. I am just saying that before this news came out all we had heard was that the heads of WB were not interested in doing another Superman movie anytime soon.

@CorndogBurglar Also the only info that we had on DC creating a combined movie universe like marvel was speculation as a result of the news about Nolan. Other then that it has only been the hopes of fans like us.
