Superman Villains Warner Bros. Should Consider Using in DC's Cinematic Universe

Superman has some of the greatest villains in comics. Which one's should be considered for the big screen?

It's no secret that Superman has some great villains. In this article I will give my opinion of which one's I think should make it to the silver screen. I will also tell you what film they would be best utilized in and in what capacity they should appear. Also, a few suggestions of who I think should portray them or what type of actor is needed. This article is about unconfirmed villains ONLY so no Lex Luthor (duh).

Conversely, I think there are some villains that just wouldn't work well in a film consistent with Man of Steel's tone so keep an eye out for Superman villains that shouldn't be used in the DCCU. If I get enough positive feedback, I'll make similar articles for other DC heroes.

Villains to Consider:

Darkseid

Darkseid 0005

Quote1
What will you do when your friends, your enemies, your lover, are all Darkseid? When there is one body. One mind. One will. One life that is Darkseid. Will you be the enemy of all existence, then?
Quote2

Real Name: Uxas

Best Utilization: Justice League Sequel (main villain), small appearances in other films

Capacity: Big Bad, main antagonist throughout the DC Cinematic Universe

Who should play him: Andre Braugher, Ron Perlman, Michael Ironside

Arguably Superman's most dangerous foe and perhaps the most powerful being in the entire DC universe, it's no secret that the tyrant ruler of Apokolips is capable of doing some remarkable damage.  Bringing Darseid into the mix opens up some great story possibilities. (an Invasion of Earth, Superman/Batman: Apokolips). I don't necessarily want to see the same stories we've already enjoyed play out on screen but some familiar situations would be nice. Darkseid is also a good opportunity to introduce Supergirl in some way.

Darseid should appear at the end of several films similar to Thanos in the MCU but in a larger speaking role. Witnessing Darseid monolog on his throne engulfed in the fires Apokolips is a site to behold. We should really get a sense of who he is and what his motivations are as well as what's to come. Apokolpis should be showcased.

Brainiac

Brainiac New Earth 001

Quote1
I will be everything there has ever been, Kryptonian. I will be evolved into perfection.
Quote2

Real Name:  Vril Drox

Best Utilization: Justice League, Man of Steel 2

Capacity: Main Antagonist

Who should play him:  Malcolm McDowell (voice), Jason Isaacs, Benedict Cumberbatch,

Brainiac is easily a top 5 Superman villain yet we haven't seen him in film yet. This AI evildoer will journey through space, acquiring knowledge while using his robotic drones to capture living organisms.  This purpose eventually leads him to earth where he and the Justice League square off in an epic battle.

My favorite origin story for Brainiac is already perfectly set up in Man of Steel. In Superman: The Animated Series Brainiac is the Kryptonian artificial intelligence responsible for the destruction of Kal-El's home world. In Man of Steel, Brainiac's symbol is briefly seen when Superman battles the device over the Indian Ocean. In the film it could be explained that Brainiac made it to earth in Zod's ship. Another posibility is he survived the destruction of Krypton by launching himself into space before the explosion.

Metallo

Metallo 0001

Quote1
Oh, yes. I know who you are. Lois Lane and Clark Kent. Crusading writers for the Daily Planet. Well, you've both lucked into the ultimate story, this time. The story of Metallo! The man who's gonna kill Superman!!
Quote2

Real Name:  John Corben

Best Utilization: Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice

Capacity: Secondary antagonist

Who should play him:  Any decent actor with some physical presence

Metallo is a physical villain who could throw down with both Batman and Superman in a way that Lex Luthor can't. His Kryptonite "heart" gives a reason why Superman can't defeat him alone and in turn teams up with Batman. Lex is the brains, Corben is the muscle.  His Metallic body being the result of an injury audiences are able to sympathize with Corben, who can be redeemed.

Metallo's origins have been changed over the years in various forms of media and the follow up to Man of Steel should be no different. Keep things relatively the same but alter his back story to fit into Man of Steel's story. John Corben is a professional con man badly injured in Zod's attack on Metropolis. Lex Luthor approaches him with  an experimental medical procedure that Lexcorp is working on. A deal of some kind is made which involves him killing Superman. blaming Superman for his condition, Corben agrees.

Livewire

Live Wire 001

Quote1
I always had a thing for electricity. Call it a mutual crush-on. I like it. It likes me. We're stinkbuddies, you know?
Quote2

Real Name:  Leslie Willis

Best Utilization: Man of Steel 2

Capacity: Main antagonist

Who should play her: a relatively unknown  actress

Livewire is perhaps Superman's next best female villain after Faora-Ul and after seeing Faora do some damage in Man of Steel I'm ready to see a bad ass female villain take over as a main antagonist. If Zack Snyder is involved as at least a producer (which is likely) we can rest easy knowing she'll be well represented. Not to mention her powers could be visually spectacular.

A shock Jock who has a taste for the controversial, Leslie uses her air time to bash Superman, claiming that he only saves people (yes, Superman will save people) to show off. Born with the ability to control electricity, she is struck by lightening on the roof of the radio station she was just fired from because her boss's wife was saved by Superman and she refused to stop bashing him. The lightening charges her powers instead of killing her. She decides to use her new powers to take revenge on the Man of Steel.

Bizarro

Superman Vol 3 23.1 Bizarro Textless

Quote1
Where cartoons? Where not funny animals? Bizarro want smash stuff. No want cartoons!
Quote2

Real Name:  Bizarro/Subject B-0

Best Utilization: Man of Steel 3

Capacity:  Secondary antagonist

Who should play him: Henry Cavill (duh), Matt Bomer

Bizarro is one of Superman's best known villains and he's gotten no love on the big screen. He is also Superman's most sympathetic and lovable villains. Although there might be a problem with his innate goofiness, I think DC could benefit from a lighter villain if done well. He also has a kick ass roller coaster at Six Flags!

Lex Luthor returns as the main villain. He is Superman's greatest villain after all. Lex attempts to create a clone of Superman. At first it seems to have worked. The clone even believes he's the real Superman. There can be a fun scene where Clark is "saved" by "Superman." As time passes though, his condition quickly deteriorates. Bizarro can be sympathetic and at the end of the film he should turn against Luthor (because he believes he is Superman) to help Clark defeat him. Bizarro gives his life in the process while saving countless lives.

Superman 0002

What all these villains have in common is they have NEVER been realized on film and with the promise of a shared cinematic universe on the horizon for DC that could very well change.  I hope you enjoyed reading this article as much as I enjoyed writing it.

I always imagined the perfect Darkseid set up as using multiple of his lackeys in supporting roles in various films. Steppenwolf, Kalibak, Mad Harriet, Big Barda, brimstone, Desaad. Subtly bringing up things like the source, the source wall, the anti-life equation, the killing glove, the omega sanction, and especially boom tubes.

Like if we see Braniac being driven off earth after the heroes trick him into searching for the knowledge contained beyond the source wall. Maybe Lex or Vandal forms a Legion of Doom and Desaad is sent to make dealings with them. Anything with Intergang.

Don't pull a Thanos and show him around, his first appearance should be utterly majestic in every way, but once appears, no holds barred.

Vandal Savage going to Darkseid and saying "Business as usual" is my favourite Darkseid moment.

Justice League 1 - Black Adam
Justice League 2 - Legion of Doom (Vandal Savage, Ra's al Ghul, Lex Luthor, Ares and Black Manta)
Justice League 3 - Darkseid (Final crisis storyline, kill off Batman)
Justice League 4 - Doomsday and Cadmus/The General and Lex Luthor
Justice League 5 - Superpowered Joker (Not Emperor Joker storyline)

I really, really do not want Brainiac as the JL1 villain. We've had plenty of alien invasion, it'll be superman-centric, it won't be that symbolic of the JL's individual members etc.

I think from the setup of Man of Steel, and the likely plot of Dawn of Justice, a human enemy of the League would be best. Dawn of Justice will see the clash of titans like Superman and Wonder Woman, which will shock the world; the people will realise even more they really aren't alone and that there are even more superpowered beings. Lex too will be there, preying on the people's fears and baiting these titans to get mad and add more salt to the wound. Then for the JL movie, tensions will be at an all time high; what kind of a villain could exploit that even more? Someone who is a superpowered titan like the JL, someone like Black Adam. Someone who is self-righteous, believes their judgments are right, and is far more charismatic and powerful than the rest of the world. Another alien invasion would just make the people follow the JL blindly because they have no one else to defend them; with someone like Black Adam, it'll be a case of 'Who do we trust? Who do we really follow? Should we stick with humanity lovers like Lex and let these maddened titans kill each other?' etc. Once they see the likes of Superman stand up to Black Adam and defeat these villains and show the world that they can be trusted and aren't like them, then the people can finally trust them.

Having BA as the villain would also cause inner conflicts with the League. When is it right to kill their enemies for example? BA would take down terrorist leaders and government officials to restore order and peace to the world, which someone like WW would agree with, whilst Batman wouldn't because it's immoral and just causes panic in the long run. It would make the League acknowledge their differences and teach them to work them out, and learn how to truly work together as friends and allies. It would mean the JL accept they are not perfect, but are human; they learn they cannot cross the line that BA did of arrogance and cold blooded murder.

If it's an alien invasion, or a robot-gone rogue invasion (Metallo/Ultron), then the people will have no choice but to follow the Justice League. That's not something I want to see; I want the people of the world to gladly put their faith in the League and see them as the heroes they are, and to see that they are truly good people who could indeed go rogue, but choose not to, so that the JL can have their full complete trust.

I just honestly want a more grounded approach to the JL movie. If they went with Black Adam, it would have so much more symbolism and inner themes than with someone like Brainiac. Having a middle eastern superpowered titan like him who'd promise to create a better world so long as he received full control and judgment, and would promise to wipe out both terrorists and governments, would play well on the thoughts of people today. Someone who'd symbolise corrupted dictatorship, false ideals etc. All the things that Loki touched upon on Avengers (His talk of freedom etc.) but never fleshed out could be done brilliantly here. It would truly be something spectacular.

Your comments about Black Adam as the first Justice League villan is brilliant

Bizarro was actually going to be used in Superman 4 before they came up with Solar-Man, or whatever his name was.

They even filmed scenes of it, although he was hardly the Bizarro we all know and love. He was basically a big dude with down syndrome wearing a black business suit.

You can see the scenes they shot of it on Youtube. If you watch them, you'll Solar-Man was the best creation of all time. Its that bad.

@Insomnia, thanks man, I genuinely feel Black Adam could be the best pick for the first Justice League villain. Going with another alien invader like Brainiac to me would just feel like a cheap safe cop-out by WB to ensure people like it and understand it quickly enough; that as another alien invasion that brings heroes in modern era together, they'll assume it'll make as much money as the Avengers if not more. I want DC and Snyder to do something different; something cleverly complicated and realistic. Black Adam is the best villain to go with that idae.

While i personally would like to see a Throne of Atlantis adaption as the first movie, i have to agree that your idea sounds a lot better. And yes. Braniac as the first villan would be just a cheap cop-out as well as being to big of a enemy as the first villan for JL

These are all villains that i would love to see. Great work for picking out some impressive villains to match Superman.

My other pick i would like to see is "Parasite"

I've also read a rumour that Benedict Cumberpatch is going to be in BvS. I could vision the actor playing "Brainiac".

@BatzFTWfan,

You have to think, when the third JL movie will come out. JL2 will probably be 2020 at the earliest; Ben Affleck will be 50 by then. Then the third movie will be another four or five years afterwards, Affleck will have made a serious wad of money off the DC movies alone, let alone anything else from what he's directed, produced or acted in. He could easily do what Robert Downey Jr. or Chris Evans have done, and just say he doesn't want to do anymore movies when his contract is up.

I doubt he's going to do batman movies forever, and when he does stop, I think it'd be best if Dick Grayson took over as Batman, like in Battle for the Cowl. I think after JL5, Dick Grayson won't want to be Batman anymore because it eats away at him, and once there aren't any more batmen, that's when Amanda Waller creates Project Batman Beyond. Then in a decade's time or so after the last Justice League movie ends, they could do a Batman/Justice League beyond series.

I agree Black Adam should be the Loki of DC; appear in Shazam, Justice League, in a flashback of a Hawkman movie, and maybe in a Shazam sequel or another movie. His character and role is too interesting and unique to include in just one movie.

I like your idea of using Adam for the Justice League. This is just an article of Superman villains I would like to see on the big screen. I put Brainiac as the JL villain because I felt that's where he worked best, not necessarily because I think he should be the villain of that movie. I was a little unclear of that in my article though. Brainiac would also work well in Man of Steel 2.

I have a feeling they are gonna surprise us and none of our ideas or speculation will come to fruition.

@Dingbat,

It's a good article and I respect the ideas with the Superman villains, I always just felt Brainiac is left best for Man of Steel 2 not for the JL team up. If they do surprise, I hope it's a good one.

@BatzFTWfan, if they 'retired' Bruce Wayne again, I'd riot harder than when I heard JGL was Robin in TDKR. Bruce Wayne - does not retire from Batman completely. He just does not. He retires when he feels he has done something wrong like getting Jason Todd killed, or when he's had to use a gun - but he comes back to the fight. Seems to be that he'll have already done one of those two things before Dawn of Justice. I don't want Bruce to say 'Hey, I defeated Darkseid, this is getting a bit hard for me, I've done my bit, now Dick can be Batman, I'm going to go live by a beach with Catwoman, peace out' type of thing.

The only way Bruce Wayne would stop being Batman is if he makes another mistake, or if he dies. If he retired, and they retired Ben Affleck out of the series, how would they explain it in the movies? How would they explain Dick Grayson taking ownership of the batcave and Wayne Manor, and saying to the Gotham public 'Oh yes, Bruce decided to go live on a beach, and he's totes given me all his cool stuff here in town, this is totally legit'.

If the time comes Ben Affleck doesn't want to do batman anymore, they should just kill Bruce Wayne off. It'll mark a very significant and tragic moment in all of CBM history, it won't be a cheap cop out and it will just make the story more powerful. It will make the audience realise that anyone could die within the story. That's just how I see it anyway.

Terry makes more sense than Dick to you with in the Batman beyond storyline. We don't know if we're going to be getting that. It all comes down to who we see as the true successor of Bruce Wayne. You say Terry, I say Dick, some may say Damian. Hell, Dick could become the next batman but as I said above, it wouldn't be permanent and he'd end up giving up, thus someone like Waller would set up Project Batman Beyond and bring in Terry McGinnis.

That's just my own speculated idea really, wow I've gone off topic a lot with my speculations lol.

I love that Darkseid idea! Show him on his throne at the end of the movie too. I don't want him to be too similar to Thanos so the narration idea is great. WB should hire you.

Legion of Doom would be cool. OR an alternate universe version of the Justice League like the Justice Lords from the Jl animated series. It would be hard to pull off but we've never seen anything like it on screen.

I for one think Metallo is a shoe in for Batman vs Superman. He is a great villian all around and he definitely would fit in nicely in the films continuity. I also think he would look great on screen next to Superman and Batman.
Dingbat
Dingbat - 9/7/2014, 8:18 AM

Exactly, but I think that position could be filled by a number of villains. Metallo works best with MOS's ending though. Parasite could work well also. He would be terrifying on screen.

First is Doomsday.

True, but I always found that to be kinda strange. Darkseid is practically a God.

I didn't put Doomsday in the list because he's not that interesting of a villain unless he's he's paired with someone else. I don't want every movie to be Lex Luthor plus some physical villain, although Cadmus is more likely.

I Always thought that the first JL movie should focus on a strange plot that involves Darkseid (Or one of his lackies) and we get a brief scene at the end of Darkseid's lacky opening a boom tube and leaving, but the tube stays open and Darkseid walks through.
Then Darkseid just absolutely whoops ass, shoots omega beams at some members (Batman dodges it of course)

Then he has a brief glare down with Batman, turns around, and walks through the boom tube again. Poof, darkseid is gone.

Continue scene with Batman saying he'll be back, and now the justice league has a reason to stay together.

I really enjoy the Justice League: Secret Origin story line from the first three episodes of Justice League (cartoon). I have to admit it would feel old since it's just another alien/terraforming story so I agree with @TheGoddamnPeel Black Adam would be phenomenal and it would be a great use of The Rock.

Also @Dingbat great read, I'm glad you used Livewire on the list, I think she's awesome!

I don't think Bizarro fits into what we've seen of the cinematic universe's tone. Livewire isn't well known but I guess the selling point on a JL film is the team anyway.

I can see Shazam being a seperate entity, outside the DCCU.

If you look at the current universe, it would be quite easy to do Bizarro without it being a Superman clone.

Just have lex try to rebuild the kryptonion baby making machine and you basically have a kryptonion clone. This way Cavill doesn't have to do dual roles.

Doomsday is about as interesting as the Chitauri.

Bizarro is who I want. I mean, obviously Brainiac - but I see Brainiac as someone all-but confirmed considering how important he is to Superman.

I agree with your choices (even though Livewire is super cheesy), but how about a story to go with each. Not just an origin story, but how s/he would best serve in the movie.

The way I see Brainiac/Superman, he's got all of these shrunken populations around in a GIANT collection, ruling over them all. If he was anything other than a machine, then he would take satisfaction over controlling every aspect of their lives. Superman, on the other hand, has proclaimed himself Earth's protector, and will police it as he sees fit. Often, he'll end up doing "the right thing" whether it was wanted or not. Without a moral compass, he could be just as Brainiac is with his collection of civilizations. As Lex tells Superman in 'Red Son': "why don't you just put the whole world in a bottle?" It's a great parallel.

Bizarro, Metallo, and Cyborg Superman could all come from the same project - designs to replace/kill Superman. If you put Bizarro and Metallo in the same movie, you'll have an ideal team of completely mismatched "villains": one wanting vengeance, the other trying to understand revenge. Bizarro was going to be in Superman IV in place of Nuclear Man, and there's a deleted scene of what thankfully never happened.
